|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench. | | BROOKLYN: GUARDS: DERON WILLIAMS is healthy and got a much-improved supporting cast to work with. He could re-enter the NBA's best point guard discussion . . . JOE JOHNSON won't have the ballin his hands as much as he used to in Atlanta. It might give him a chance to concentrate on regaining his stroke as one of the NBA's best shooters . . . MARSHON BROOKS will look to settle in as a high-scoring sixth man. He'll be trade bait for most of the season . . . After a disastrous year in Chicago, C.J. WATSON will be asked to spell Williams for a few minutes a night . . . KEITH BOGANS is still kicking around as a second unit glue guy . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR is an at-times out-of-control combo guard, but the rookie could threaten Watson's role at some point. FORWARDS: KRIS HUMPHRIES' contract was structured to make him easier to trade. He'll rebound and get his put-backs, and the Nets will likely showcase him a bit . . . GERALD WALLACE is slowing down, and now that he's signed his last big NBA contract he might not have much incentive to live up to his 'Crash' nickname. Brooklyn has no choice but to give him heavy minutes considering their investment . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC is a veteran stretch four. Consider him a penniless man's Channing Frye . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA played himself into a roster spot this summer. He's a mediocre athlete, but a cagey scorer with a high basketball IQ . . . JOSH CHILDRESS and JERRY STACKHOUSE were added in September for depth . . . REGGIE EVANS will flop unconvincingly, punch opponents in the jewels and bring other 'tough guy' intangibles. CENTERS: BROOK LOPEZ had been remarkably durable before last year's foot injury, and he should be fully healed by the start of training camp. He's gifted offensively, but will continue to grab relatively few rebounds and generally get fried defensively. He's also a candidate to be traded midseason if another franchise can stomach his max contract . . . As insurance, former Wizards big man ANDRAY BLATCHE was brought in. He could be the team's best interior defender, able to play either the four or five spot. |

*Grizzlies-Nets Preview* ========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Memphis (36-18) at Brooklyn (33-23), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Memphis Grizzlies have picked up right where they left off before the All-Star Break. With one of the NBA's best rebounding squads and an inside duo that continues to produce double-doubles, the Grizzlies have run their winning streak to six games.
The Brooklyn Nets had their own four-game winning streak snapped without one of their top players, but hope to get Joe Johnson back Sunday when they host the Grizzlies.
Memphis (36-18) is in the midst of its longest winning streak since stringing together eight in a row after a loss in the season opener. The Grizzlies' plus-4.4 rebounding differential ranks second in the NBA, and they're averaging a plus-7.8 during their streak.
Their 13.7 3-pointers attempted per game are the fewest in the NBA, as they prefer to go inside to Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. Randolph and Gasol picked up their 33rd and 11th double-doubles of the season, respectively, in an 88-82 win over Orlando on Friday.
They combined for 27 rebounds as the Grizzlies claimed a 52-42 advantage on the boards. Randolph, whose double-double total ranks second in the NBA, is also the league's second-leading rebounder with 11.7 per game.
It was a nice bounce-back game for Gasol, who was 8 of 11 for 19 points and 13 rebounds after going 4 for 19 in his previous two games. He still wasn't necessarily pleased with the Grizzlies' performance, however, as they let the short-handed Magic hang around due in part to 17-for-29 free-throw shooting.
"We have to play better basketball," Gasol said. "We have to play more consistent, more disciplined on both ends."
Memphis dominated the interior in the teams' first meeting, a 101-77 home win on Jan. 25, outscoring Brooklyn 62-40 in the paint.
The Nets (33-23) weren't able to extend their winning streak to five on Friday, falling to Houston 106-96. Johnson, the team's second-leading scorer at 17.0 per game, missed his first contest of the season due to plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
C.J. Watson scored 17 on 7-of-15 shooting while starting in Johnson's place.
"It was sore after the Milwaukee game," general manager Billy King said of Johnson's injury, referring to Wednesday's 97-94 win. "It's mildly inflamed so he's on some medication and day-to-day, most likely will play Sunday."
Johnson isn't the only key player who Brooklyn will have to monitor. Deron Williams received cortisone shots in each ankle just prior to the All-Star break, the third time he's received the injections this season.
Williams, averaging 16.8 points and 7.7 assists, is trying to strike a balance between staying healthy while also being on the court enough to help the Nets as they make their playoff push. Brooklyn is one game behind New York for the Atlantic Division lead and third place in the Eastern Conference.
"It's tough cause we're in a position where if we lose a couple games, we slip to sixth or seventh," said Williams, who had 12 points against Memphis last month. "We win a couple, we can move up to second. So I need to be out there as much as possible. I need to continue to do things I need to do in the weight room and training room to stay as healthy and as fresh as possible."
