KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm.
BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO's name is etched on the trading block. Regardless of where he lands, his injured knee should be 100 percent healthy . . . With an improved three-point shot, AVERY BRADLEY has become a complete player. His defense guarantees minutes regardless . . . MARCUS SMART seems to be waiting in the wings for a Rondo trade. In the meantime, he'll back up both guard spots. Just like in college, he'll be brilliant at times, but inconsistent . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY will stick around as a No. 3 point guard . . . EVAN TURNER was a disaster in Indy. He'll have a tough time making this rotation . . . MARCUS THORNTON was acquired as a trade throw-in. The Celtics don't have big plans for the remorseless gunner. FORWARDS: He's isn't a legitimate No. 1 option, but JEFF GREEN will be the go-to guy again. He hasn't been able to handle the extra defensive attention, becoming increasingly inefficient . . . He has plenty of limitations on both ends of the court, but JARED SULLINGER is a crafty scorer. He'll get close to starter minutes as the Celtics search for offense . . . BRANDON BASS will see time at the 4 and the 5. He's made a pledge to improve offensively, but more likely he'll be a defensive presence and a screen-setter . . . JAMES YOUNG missed most of the summer healing a neck injury. He's going to do some damage running the floor, but he doesn't have the skills for the half-court game in the NBA . . . GERALD WALLACE is playing out the string. CENTERS: KELLY OLYNYK has the most upside in this frontcourt. His rare mobility and skill set for a 7-footer made a difference last year. It's just a question of whether he can hold up defensively down low . . . TYLER ZELLER gives them another solid 7-footer who opposing defenses have to account for. He'll fit well in head coach Brad Stevens' system . . . JOEL ANTHONY isn't going to get off the bench.

*Bulls-Celtics Preview* =======================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Chicago (9-6) at Boston (4-8), 1:00 p.m. EDT

There doesn't appear to be any end in sight to the Derrick Rose saga, which took another strange turn in the Chicago Bulls' latest game.

Rose - along with Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson - is uncertain to be available Friday as the injury-plagued Bulls continue their annual circus trip against the Boston Celtics.

After working his way back from two serious knee injuries, Rose has appeared in just seven games due to a slew of leg-related issues. The former NBA MVP returned from a strained left hamstring to score 18 points in Monday's 97-95 win at Utah, but he played just 10 minutes the following night in a 114-109 loss at Denver.

Rose sat out the entire second half but said he didn't suffer any setbacks. He finished with two points on 1-of-4 shooting, lowering his average to 15.7 points.

"I'm just trying to be smart. We're on a back-to-back, got fatigued and I didn't want to take any steps back," Rose told the team's official website. "Offensively, I just felt like I couldn't get to where I wanted to go and defensively, just the speed of the game. I just wasn't ready for it fatigue-wise.

"It's frustrating, but I can't let it get me down. At the end, this is going to be minor. It's a long season and I've just got to keep going. I know the team is not worried about me. I should be good."

The Bulls (9-6), who were also without Noah (knee) and Gibson (ankle), dropped to 2-3 on their seven-game trek. Jimmy Butler matched a career high with 32 points while Pau Gasol added 22 and 11 rebounds, but Chicago allowed the Nuggets to shoot 50.6 percent.

"Derrick's not the only one," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We've got a lot of stuff going on here; we've got to get people healthy. That's got to be a priority. Whoever is in there, get the job done. Just find a way to win. ... We have more than enough offense, but we have to have an understanding of how hard we have to play defensively to give ourselves a chance to win."

Butler has carried the load with a team-leading 21.6 points per game on 50.0 percent shooting, way up from last season's marks of 13.1 and 39.7.

"Jimmy's been incredible," Thibodeau said. "He's a star. He does it on both ends of the floor. He's an amazing player."

Butler scored 16 on 7-of-16 shooting as the Bulls fell 106-101 to Boston on Nov. 8. Kelly Olynyk had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Boston, which improved to 4-10 in the series since 2011.

The Celtics (4-8) have dropped five of six overall, with their only victory coming 101-90 at winless Philadelphia on Nov. 19. Boston has lost four in a row at home following Sunday's 94-88 defeat to Portland, and will try to avoid its first five-game skid there since dropping 13 in a row from Dec. 20-Feb. 9, 2007.

"I feel really good about the way we guarded," said coach Brad Stevens, whose team held the Trail Blazers to 43.0 percent shooting. "I feel like now we have a game that we can point to that we did it against a good team."

Jeff Green and Jared Sullinger scored 19 points apiece, but Boston shot 38.9 percent from the field, including 5 of 23 from beyond the arc. The Celtics are among the NBA's worst 3-point shooting teams at 30.0 percent.

Boston could get rookie point guard Marcus Smart back after a three-week absence due to a sprained ankle.
