| | | CHICAGO: GUARDS: The best guess on DERRICK ROSE is a February return. But an ACL injury usually isn't 100 percent until the second full year back . . . With Rose out, KIRK HINRICH figures to play heavy minutes early. He's a defensive specialist who will pass and watch on offense . . . NATE ROBINSON could push Hinrich for minutes. He's the offensive half of that platoon, but Thibodeau almost always leans defense . . . RICHARD HAMILTON will carry a bigger offensive load while Rose is recovering. He's a shadow of his former self . . . MARCO BELINELLI is a nice addition. He's solid defensively, and he brings the long-range shooting Chicago lacks. Don't be surprised if he pushes Hamilton . . . Rookie MARQUIS TEAGUE will mostly sit and watch this year. FORWARDS: After avoiding wrist surgery, LUOL DENG should be Chicago's top scorer while Rose is out. He's the only one on this team who even has a chance to generate his own offense . . . CARLOS BOOZER continues to be a major disappointment. In the past it's been his atrocious defense, but now he's taken a step back offensively as well. He may score more with Rose out, but he'll continue to sit late in close games . . . TAJ GIBSON should be in for a bigger role. With Omer Asik gone, he's one of only two defensively capable bigs on this roster . . . VLADIMIR RADMANOVIC will try to replace some of the three-point shooting they lost when Kyle Korver left . . . JIMMY BUTLER has a puncher's chance at a rotation spot after a good summer. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH was still working his way back from that badly sprained ankle this summer. His durability is questionable, but the Bulls will have to lean on Noah for more minutes now that Omer Asik is gone . . . NAZR MOHAMMED steps into Asik's role as Noah's backup. But while Asik was an active defender, Mohammed is more of just a big body with six fouls to give. | | BOSTON: GUARDS: This offense now belongs to RAJON RONDO, and that should be especially true during the regular season . . . Even if he comes off the bench, JASON TERRY figures to see the bulk of the minutes at shooting guard. He provides some much-needed outside shooting after Ray Allen left and should challenge Paul Pierce for the team lead in shot attempts . . . Adding COURTNEY LEE was more of a move for the future. He's a fine young second-unit player for now and should be an heir apparent on one of the wings . . . AVERY BRADLEY could be out until December after shoulder surgery. As Boston's best perimeter defensive player, he could reclaim his starting job in the season's second half . . . The addition of LEANDRO BARBOSA gives Boston another veteran who can create his own offense in the second unit, something that was sorely missing in last year's playoff run. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE quietly had a great regular season last year. Though with some improved depth behind him, Rivers might have his 35-year-old All-Star wing rest more often . . . BRANDON BASS gives them another scoring option, even if he does struggle on the defensive end. He'll get full-time minutes only in certain matchups as long as the frontcourt is healthy . . . JEFF GREEN's heart condition is no longer a concern, but the tweener's role in Boston after a year off is cause for worry . . . There are already question marks surrounding rookie JARED SULLINGER's back. He's very similar to Bass: He can score out to mid-range but doesn't play much defense. Expect him to be strictly a second-unit player in his first NBA season . . . CHRIS WILCOX will provide fouls off the bench when healthy. CENTERS: The Celtics are prepared to go with KEVIN GARNETT in the middle, which was the case when they were at their best last season. His role on offense is still knocking down mid-range jumpers, and he's still an elite defensive player . . . Professional flopper JASON COLLINS will fill in nicely for the departed Greg Stiemsma . . . FAB MELO is years away from being ready to contribute (if he actually is ever ready to contribute) and DARKO MILICIC was also added via free agency for more frontcourt depth. |

*Bulls-Celtics Preview* =======================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
Chicago (22-15) at Boston (20-18), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Boston Celtics' current homestand was going well before a seemingly inferior opponent ended their season-best winning streak.
Getting back on track requires overcoming a tough challenge from one of the league's best road squads.
Boston looks to end the Chicago Bulls' four-game road winning streak when it concludes a stretch of five straight at home Friday night.
The Celtics (20-18) were outplayed by New Orleans in Wednesday's 90-78 loss that ended a six-game win streak. They shot a dismal 6 of 16 (37.5 percent) from the free throw line - their worst percentage since going 5 of 14 (35.7) in a loss to Houston on Nov. 11, 1994 - and finished 4 of 18 from 3-point range.
Boston is shooting 30.0 percent from beyond the arc in its last six.
"We refused to go in the paint," coach Doc Rivers said. "We had an electric fence around the paint. We settled for jump shots."
Boston will look to regroup after only its third home loss in its last 12 tries.
"We've just got to get back to the drawing board," said Paul Pierce, who went 1 for 7 from 3-point range. "We've been playing well of late and (we'll) try to make another run."
The Celtics have won 11 of the last 14 meetings - including the postseason - with the Bulls at TD Garden, though Chicago has won nine of 11 on the road and is an Eastern Conference-best 11-5 away from home.
Luol Deng hit a jumper with 3 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Bulls (22-15) a 107-105 win at Toronto on Wednesday. Deng, who finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds in a 101-95 home loss to Boston on Nov. 12, scored 19 against the Raptors despite hurting his hamstring in the first quarter.
He's shooting 54.4 percent over his last four games and averaging 24.0 points in his last four versus Boston.
"The guys that have been around and seen him play a lot know that's what he does - whatever you need," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "You need great defense, he does that. You need a rebound in traffic, he does that. You need a big shot, he does that. To me, that's who he is. That's what makes him such a good player."
Joakim Noah, who had 16 points and 14 rebounds Wednesday, posted his second career triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in a 100-89 victory over Boston at home Dec. 18 - Chicago's sixth win in the last eight overall meetings.
The Bulls should have a good chance of earning another win in the series if Carlos Boozer continues his solid play. He had one of his conference-leading 21 double-doubles with 21 points and 12 rebounds in the last meeting with the Celtics and scored a season-high 36 points with 12 boards Wednesday.
Boozer has averaged 24.0 points and 10.8 rebounds while shooting 55.9 percent in helping Chicago go 6-2 this month.
"We had a tough end to 2012 and we all want to play much better in 2013 and get more wins," Boozer told the team's official website. "So far we are doing pretty well in January."
In order to keep rolling the Bulls likely will have to slow Rajon Rondo, who is averaging 21.0 points in his last five games in the series. He scored a season-high 26 in the last matchup.
