KEY GAME INFORMATION
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench.
ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation.

*Nets-Hawks Preview* ====================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Brooklyn At Atlanta, Game Two, 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Atlanta Hawks were already having to deal with several injuries before the postseason began.

Now they're hoping their All-Star center can be effective while playing through a dislocated right pinky finger.

Al Horford says he'll be in the lineup Wednesday night when the Hawks try to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round series against the visiting Brooklyn Nets.

"It's definitely a concern," said guard Kyle Korver, who led Atlanta with 21 points in Sunday's series-opening 99-92 win. "Hopefully, it's not too big of a deal. But injuries are always something you're worried about."

Paul Millsap is attempting to play through a sprained right shoulder that cost him five games late in the season. He had been wearing a compression shirt under his jersey to give the shoulder a little extra protection, but now hopes to go without it in an effort to improve his range of motion.

The All-Star forward has made just 4 of 20 from the field in two games since his return after he finished with six points on 2-of-11 shooting against the eighth-seeded Nets in Game 1.

Atlanta's frontcourt took another hit Sunday when Horford injured his finger while going up for a rebound early in the fourth quarter. He was able to play the final 5:52 with his pinky taped to the ring finger, though he was clearly in pain and seemed to have trouble shooting after the tape job.

Horford, who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, wasn't immediately sure about whether he'll play in Game 2. However, he said the finger was feeling much better after going through a full practice Tuesday.

"I hope this is a non-story," NBA Coach of the Year Mike Budenholzer said of Horford, averaging 18.5 points on 62.1 percent shooting in the last four meetings with Brooklyn. "It's not on our minds very much."

The injuries, however, are piling up for Budenholzer's club. Backup forward Mike Scott was limited to 10 minutes due to a bruised back, and reserve guard Thabo Sefolosha is out for the playoffs with an injury he claims was caused by New York City police during his arrest late in the season.

Korver, Jeff Teague and DeMarre Carroll may continue carrying the scoring load. Korver hit the last of his five 3-pointers Sunday after the Nets cut a 16-point deficit to 88-83, while Teague and Carroll each had 17 points.

Carroll is averaging 17.2 points against the Nets this season while sinking 15 of 27 from 3-point range.

The Nets had dropped the four regular-season meetings by average of 17.2 points, but they came away from the opener optimistic about their chances against an Atlanta team that earned a No. 1 seed for the first time since 1994.

Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young combined for 32 points and 24 rebounds as Brooklyn owned a 54-42 scoring advantage in the paint and a 47-39 edge on the boards.

The Nets, however, will likely need a better perimeter effort after going 5 for 20 from beyond the arc, including 1 of 11 by Bojan Bogdanovic and Joe Johnson.

"This is going to be a tough series," said Johnson, a former Hawks All-Star who was booed every time he touched the ball. "This is one game. We've got to put it behind us."

Mirza Teletovic hasn't played in nearly three months because of blood clots, but he went through his second practice with contact Monday. The third-year small forward might able to go a few minutes in Game 2, if needed.
