KEY GAME INFORMATION
PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.

*Trail Blazers-Grizzlies Preview* =================================

Portland At Memphis, Game Two, 8:00 p.m. EDT

(AP) - Mike Conley should be resting right now, letting his sprained right foot heal.

But he won't, no time. It's the playoffs.

So the Grizzlies guard is playing even though sharp pain shoots through his foot when he runs or jumps - just not enough to keep him on the bench.

"It's going to flare up no matter what I do," Conley said ahead of Wednesday night's Game 2 of the injury that kept him out of the last four games of the season. "I just go out there and play as if I'm not injured and see how much I can do and what I can do to help the team and the following day is just rehab and recover."

The eight-year veteran not only started Sunday's opening win, he scored 16 points. But he took advantage of a big lead to rest during the fourth quarter.

His teammates weren't surprised that Conley was not only available for the 100-86 win, but played well.

"I expect a lot out of him to be honest with you," center Marc Gasol said. "He's my little man. He's a great player, great guy. I knew he wasn't going to miss a playoff game. I can only ask him to give me whatever he has, and he's done it. And I'm going to ask the same next game."

It's an injury that can take up to six weeks to fully heal, yet Conley played just 11 days after hurting his foot against New Orleans. His only nod to the injury has been wearing a bigger shoe, going to size 12s because of extra padding - a half-size larger than he'd normally wear. That's a change from Game 1, when he wore a 12 on his sore foot and an 11 1/2 on the other.

"Mike's a tough, tough guy," forward Zach Randolph said.

Though Conley is hurting, the Trail Blazers have seen little evidence of his discomfort. Point guard Damian Lillard said he thought Conley played well and didn't seem slower than normal.

"Mike is a guy that I got a lot of respect for him," Lillard said. "For him to still come out there Game 1 for his team and play through it, I know how it feels to be banged up and have to chase guys over pick and rolls and use pick and rolls and make plays. You're kind of the guy that's moving around the most. He's out there doing what he has to for his team."

Conley was off to the best start of his career, averaging 18.3 points, 6.2 assists and shooting 46.6 percent through the first 37 games. Then sprained ankles started taking a toll, and Conley finished the season averaging 15.8 points and 5.4 assists.

If Conley needed any other motivation, it was Lillard who got the call to replace Blake Griffin in this season's All-Star game, not Conley. Now the guards are going against each other when it matters most.

Conley said he's gotten better playing the likes of Lillard, Chris Paul, Tony Parker and Russell Westbrook - "all the best point guards in the league."

"It's just fun to go out there and compete," Conley said, "and try to do my best regardless of who I'm playing against."

Conley and the rest of the Grizzlies certainly did their best to disrupt the Trail Blazers in the opener. Portland shot 33.7 percent, with Lillard going 5 of 21 and missing all six of his 3-point attempts.

"Four out of the first five misses were halfway down, so they felt good," Lillard said. "I felt good out there. I think it was just a game where we got outplayed and we weren't good enough offensively or defensively to win the game."

C.J. McCollum started alongside him and shot 1 of 8, but Lillard might have Arron Afflalo back to start Game 2. Afflalo, who's dealing with a sore shoulder that's kept him out of the past four games, is questionable.
