| | | KANSAS CITY: 2016: 81-81, third place.
Manager: Ned Yost (eighth season).
He's Here: OF Jorge Soler, RHP Jason Hammel, RHP Nathan Karns, DH Brandon Moss, LHP Travis Wood.
He's Outta Here: RHP Wade Davis, DH Kendrys Morales, OF Jarrod Dyson, RHP Luke Hochevar, RHP Edinson Volquez.
Projected lineup: SS Alcides Escobar (.261, 7 HRs, 55 RBIs), LF Alex Gordon (.220, 17, 40), CF Lorenzo Cain (.287, 9, 56), 1B Eric Hosmer (.266, 25, 104), DH Brandon Moss (.255, 28, 67), RF Jorge Soler (.238, 12, 31 with Cubs; likely to start season on DL with strained oblique), 3B Mike Moustakas (.240, 7, 13), C Salvador Perez (.247, 22, 64), Raul Mondesi (.185, 2, 13).
Rotation: LH Danny Duffy (12-3, 3.51 ERA, 188 Ks), RH Ian Kennedy (11-11, 3.68, 184 Ks), RH Jason Hammel (11-11, 3.83 with Cubs), LH Jason Vargas (0-0, 2.25 in 3 starts after returning from Tommy John surgery), RH Nathan Karns (6-2, 5.15 with Mariners).
Key relievers: RH Kelvin Herrera (2-6, 2.75, 12 saves), RH Joakim Soria (5-8, 4.05), LH Matt Strahm (2-2, 1.23), LH Travis Wood (4-0, 2.95), LH Scott Alexander (0-0, 3.32), RH Chris Young (3-9, 6.19).
Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. Duffy showed signs of blossoming into an ace late last year, but is yet to put it all together for a full season. Hammel was signed after the tragic death of RHP Yordano Ventura in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. Vargas barely pitched last season after coming back from elbow surgery. Karns has intriguing potential, but might end up in the bullpen unless he lives up to it quickly.
Outlook: Royals GM Dayton Moore thinks his starting rotation is the best it has been during his tenure, even if just about every spot is tenuous. He also thinks Kansas City has more power at the plate this year thanks to Moustakas' return from a torn ACL and the signing of Moss. Paulo Orlando (.302, 5, 43, 14 SBs) will replace Soler in right field at the start of the season. But there are plenty of question marks up and down the lineup, not to mention on the pitching staff, and several things must break right for Kansas City to make noise in the AL Central and take a run at its third World Series appearance in four years. | | TAMPA BAY: 2016: 68-94, fifth place
Manager: Kevin Cash (third season)
Who's new? OF Colby Rasmus, OF/1B Rickie Weeks Jr., RHP Tommy Hunter, RHP Jumbo Diaz, C Wilson Ramos, C Derek Norris, OF Mallex Smith, RHP Jose De Leon, RHP Shawn Tolleson
Who's gone? 2B Logan Forsythe, IF/OF Steve Pearce, OF Desmond Jennings, OF Mikie Mahtook, C Hank Conger, IF/OF Taylor Motter, C Bobby Wilson, LHP Drew Smyly, LHP Enny Romero, RHP Steve Geltz, LHP Dana Eveland, RHP Kevin Jepsen, RHP Tyler Sturdevant, RHP Dylan Floro
Projected lineup: DH Corey Dickerson (.245, 24, 70), CF Kevin Kiermaier (.246, 12, 37, 21 SB), 3B Evan Longoria (.273, 36, 98), 2B Brad Miller (.243, 30, 81), RF Steven Souza (.247, 17, 49), LF Colby Rasmus (.206, 15, 54 with Astros), SS Tim Beckham (.247, 5, 16), 1B Logan Morrison (.238, 14, 43), C Curt Casali (.186, 8, 25)
Rotation: RH Chris Archer (9-19, 4.02 ERA), RH Jake Odorizzi (10-6, 3.69), RH Alex Cobb (1-2, 8.59 in five starts), LH Blake Snell (6-8, 3.54), RH Matt Andriese (8-8, 4.37)
Key relievers: RH Alex Colome (2-4, 1.91, 37/40 SV), RH Tommy Hunter (2-2, 3.18 with Indians), RH Danny Farquhar (1-0, 3.06), LH Xavier Cede'o (3-4, 3.70), RH Erasmo Ramirez (7-11, 3.77), RH Jumbo Diaz (1-1, 3.14), RH Chase Whitley (0-0, 2.51)
Hot spots: Shortstop and catcher. Tim Beckham and the combination of Curt Casali and newly signed Derek Norris are holding down the fort while Matt Duffy and Wilson Ramos recover from injuries. Beckham and Casali or Norris can at least try to make the situation awkward by hitting. That wasn't their strong suit last year, but the Rays will need someone to bat eighth and ninth while Ramos (knee surgery; out until July) and Duffy (Achilles surgery; out until May) heal.
Outlook: How do you fix a team that ranked eighth in the AL in ERA and 14th in runs scored? If you're the Rays, you trade away your second-best hitter (Forsythe) for a pitcher who will start the season in Triple-A (De Leon), then sign an outfielder with a .641 OPS (Rasmus) to be your second-highest paid player. Expectations for a team with the third-lowest payroll in the game shouldn't be high to begin with. Getting Duffy and Ramos back from the DL will help, but not enough to slow rumors of Archer, Cobb and Odorizzi getting traded if they pitch well. |
| | Bad blood could linger as Rays, Royals wrap up series
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay and Kansas City close out a four-game series on Thursday afternoon, but there was an undercurrent of tension lingering after the Rays' 12-1 win over the Royals on Wednesday stemming from an incident in the seventh inning. Rays starter Chris Archer, who dominated with 11 strikeouts in eight shutout innings, hit Royals catcher Salvador Perez with a pitch. The two exchanged words before they were separated by the umpires. "Honestly, there was nothing malicious there," Archer said after the game. "I've had some great interactions with him in the past. Whenever we crossed paths prior to that, we were just saying playful things to each other. "Just like other times in the past, he's a good hitter. I'm trying to pitch inside. There's no malicious intent with 96 miles an hour." The Royals weren't so sure. Kansas City manager Ned Yost said the pitch stood out on a night in which the Tampa Bay ace didn't walk a batter. "It's hard for me to judge intent. It's awfully strange that as good as his command was, that one got away from him," Yost said. "Sal had hit the ball hard twice, but it didn't make any sense. It's hard to fathom if there was intent there or not." Perez was still upset about the pitch after the game, laying out an expletive-laden tirade when he was asked if the pitch seemed intentional. "Yeah, of course, he threw at me," said Perez, who had two of the Royals' five hits against Archer. "I think he was mad. I don't think that's the right way. He never throws the first pitch inside -- we see all the reports he has. He never throws inside. "We don't come out and let the (expletive) guy throw 95 mph and try to hit you. That's (expletive). That's what I think." The Rays will try to salvage a series split with the Royals. Right-hander Jake Odorizzi will be on the mound for Tampa Bay, bringing a 2-1 record and a 2.88 ERA. Odorizzi is coming off a seven-inning outing Saturday against Toronto, when he got the win and struck out six while holding the Blue Jays to three hits. Odorizzi was with the Royals until he was traded to the Rays in December 2012. He is 1-3 all time with a 5.40 ERA against his former team. His last outing against Kansas City was a win, however, when he went six innings in a 12-0 victory in August. The Royals will answer with left-hander Jason Vargas, who has been stellar this season with a 4-1 record and a 1.19 ERA. For his career, he is 4-5 with a 3.11 ERA in 11 outings against the Rays, but he hasn't won at Tropicana Field since 2013. A win would put the Rays at 4-5 to conclude a homestand they entered with high expectations, as they were set to face three teams with poor records: the Miami Marlins, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Royals. Winning would also give the Rays positive momentum as they hit the road for the next six games, with three at Boston and three at Cleveland. The Royals return home Friday to open a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. |
