KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY METS: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season.
SEATTLE: 2016: 86-76, second place
Manager: Scott Servais (second season)
Who's new? LF Jarrod Dyson, SS Jean Segura, IF Danny Valencia, RF Mitch Haniger, C Carlos Ruiz, C Tuffy Gosewich, RHP Yovani Gallardo, LHP Drew Smyly, LHP Marc Rzepczynski, RHP Casey Fien, RHP Chris Heston
Who's gone? OF Seth Smith, SS Ketel Marte, C Chris Iannetta, OF Nori Aoki, RHP Taijuan Walker, RHP Nathan Karns, LHP Vidal Nuno, LHP David Rollins, RHP Tom Wilhelmsen
Projected lineup: LF Jarrod Dyson (.278, 1 HR, 25 RBI, 30 SB with Royals), SS Jean Segura (.319, 20, 64, 33 with Diamondbacks), 2B Robinson Cano (.298, 39, 103), DH Nelson Cruz (.287, 43, 105), 3B Kyle Seager (.278, 30, 99), C Mike Zunino (.207, 12, 31), 1B Danny Valencia (.287, 17, 51 with A's), RF Mitch Haniger (.229, 5, 17 in 34 games with Diamondbacks), CF Leonys Martin (.247, 15, 47, 24 SB)
Rotation: RH Felix Hernandez (11-8, 3.82), RH Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 4.12), LH James Paxton (6-7, 3.79), RH Yovani Gallardo (6-8, 5.42 with Orioles), LH Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 with Rays)
Key relievers: RH Steve Cishek (4-6, 2.81, 25/32 SV), RH Edwin Diaz (0-4, 2.79, 18/21), RH Nick Vincent (4-4, 3.73), RH Evan Scribner (0-0, 0.00 in 12 games), LH Marc Rzepczynski (1-0, 2.64 with A's and Nationals), RH Casey Fien (1-1, 5.49 with Twins and Dodgers)
Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't.
PREVIEW
Mariners still flirting with .500 as Mets arrive

SEATTLE -- The .500 mark is a hurdle the Seattle Mariners struggle to clear.

Eight times this season, including the season opener, they had a chance to push past the break-even mark. Only once did they win.

In 103 games, they have spent only three games above .500.

"I've heard about six times this year, 'This is the most important series of the year,'" Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "We had a slow start (1-6) and an uphill climb. We get excited to get to .500 but haven't been able to kick it into gear and get over. We haven't seen a 15 of 19 (streak) to get six or seven games over (.500)."

Seattle had another chance to get on the right side of the ledger Wednesday, but the Mariners were blanked 4-0 by Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox to drop to 51-52.

The Mariners will try to get back to .500 on Friday night at Safeco Field when they open a three-game series against the New York Mets. Seattle left-hander Ariel Miranda (7-4, 4.30 ERA) is scheduled to oppose by New York right-hander Rafael Montero (1-7, 5.19).

The Mariners are 8-5 since the All-Star break, having won three of their four series. With the expected return of outfielder Jarrod Dyson on Friday, they might be as healthy as they have been in this injury-ravaged season. Dyson has been out since hyperextending his left big toe when running into the center field fence Saturday.

Rookie left fielder Ben Gamel has a 13-game hitting streak, his third streak of at least 10 games this season. He is batting .324, just behind shortstop Jean Segura, who is at .326, for the team lead.

The Mets (47-53) lost 7-5 at San Diego on Thursday night, their second consecutive defeat after they opened the series with two wins over the Padres.

New York is in sell mode as the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline approaches. The Mets sent first baseman Lucas Duda, the longest-tenured player on the team, to the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday for right-hander Drew Smith, a third-round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2015.

Duda, 31, who is eligible for free agency after the season, was batting .246 with 17 home runs and 37 RBIs for the Mets.

"I've heard rumors and stuff," Duda said in the visiting clubhouse in San Diego. "Kind of a mixed emotion. Guys here I've really grown pretty close to."

Mets manager Terry Collins praised Duda for his professionalism.

"He's been a tremendous part of this team for a long time, and we wish him all the best and thank him for everything he's done in New York," Collins said. "He was very responsible for our success in 2015 and 2016."

Smith, 23, has pitched at three levels of the Rays' organization this season, including Triple-A, and he has a 1.60 ERA in 31 minor league appearances in 2017. His fastball has been clocked at 98 mph and scouts believe he has the capability to be a closer in the majors.
