Manager: Paul Molitor (third season). He's Here: C Jason Castro, RHP Matt Belisle, SS Ehire Adrianza, LHP Craig Breslow. He's Outta Here: 3B Trevor Plouffe, C Kurt Suzuki, LHP Tommy Milone, RHP Pat Light.
Projected lineup: 2B Brian Dozier (.268, 42, 99, 18/20 SBs), RF Max Kepler (.235, 17, 63), CF Byron Buxton (.225, 10 HRs, 38 RBIs, 118 Ks in 298 ABs), 1B Joe Mauer (.261, 11, 49), 3B Miguel Sano (.236, 25, 66, 178 Ks in 437 ABs), DH Kennys Vargas (.230, 10, 20 in 152 ABs), LF Eddie Rosario (.269, 10, 32), C Jason Castro (.210, 11, 32 with Houston), SS Jorge Polanco (.282, 4, 27 in 245 ABs).
Rotation: RH Ervin Santana (7-11, 3.38 ERA, 149 Ks), RH Phil Hughes (1-7, 5.95, 11 HRs, 11 starts), LH Hector Santiago (3-6, 5.58, 13 HRs, 11 starts after trade with Angels), RH Kyle Gibson (6-11, 5.07, 1.561 WHIP), LH Adalberto Mejia (rookie).
Key relievers: RH Brandon Kintzler (0-2, 3.15, 17/20 saves), RH Matt Belisle (0-0, 1.76 in 40 games for Nationals), RH Ryan Pressly (6-7, 3.70, 1 save in 72 games), LH Taylor Rogers (3-1, 3.96, 64 Ks in 57 games), LH Craig Breslow (0-2, 4.50 in 15 games for Marlins). Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. The resuscitation of a team with the worst record in the majors last season must begin with starting pitching that ranked 30th out of 30 in wins (37), ERA (5.39) and strikeouts (655). Hughes, Santiago, Gibson and Berrios will all be counted on to make 2016 the aberration and not the standard. Adding Castro, who has a strong reputation for game calling and pitch framing, probably can't hurt. There's enough depth in the group at least to give the Twins a chance to return to respectability as new baseball chief Derek Falvey continues to try to revamp organizational philosophy and process for the long term. The bullpen appears more vulnerable than the rotation, despite being bolstered by the addition of the veteran Belisle. Three-time All-Star closer Glen Perkins is still working his way back from surgery last year to repair a torn labrum and will likely land on the disabled list to start the season. Kintzler fared well in his place, but doesn't have a track record.
Outlook: The Twins ranked a respectable sixth in the American League in total bases and eighth in OPS despite their abysmal record last year. Buxton's sparkling September, following a second straight frustrating summer, restored his and the club's confidence in the 2012 second overall draft pick. Dozier probably hit his power ceiling in 2016, but if Buxton and Sano can strike out less and get on base more there's the potential in place for a productive offense. Vargas hit his way back into contention for the DH spot with a decent finish to 2016, but the pressure is on him to prove he's worth a spot in the lineup with a strong performance this spring by Park, who struggled badly to adjust to major league pitching in his arrival from South Korea last year.
OAKLAND: 2016: 69-93, fifth place
Manager: Bob Melvin (seventh season)
Who's new? CF Rajai Davis, OF Matt Joyce, 3B Trevor Plouffe, IF Adam Rosales, RHP Santiago Casilla
Who's gone? IF/OF Danny Valencia, OF Brett Eibner, 2B Eric Sogard, 2B Tyler Ladendorf, LHP Dillon Overton, RHP Fernando Rodriguez
Projected lineup: CF Rajai Davis (.249, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 43 SB with Indians), C Stephen Vogt (.251, 14, 56), DH Ryon Healy (.305, 13, 37 in 72 games), LF Khris Davis (.247, 42, 102), RF Matt Joyce (.242, 13, 42 with Pirates) or Mark Canha (.122, 3, 6 in 16 games), SS Marcus Semien (.238, 27, 75, 10 SB), 3B Trevor Plouffe (.260, 12, 47 with Twins), 1B Yonder Alonso (.253, 7, 56), 2B Jed Lowrie (.263, 2, 27 in 87 games)
Rotation: RH Kendall Graveman (10-11, 4.11), LH Sean Manaea (7-9, 3.86), RH Jharel Cotton (2-0, 2.15 in five games), RH Andrew Triggs (1-1, 4.31), RH Jesse Hahn (2-4, 6.02 in nine games) and Frankie Montas (0-0, 2.38 in four games at Triple-A)
Key relievers: RH Ryan Madson (6-7, 3.62, 30/37 SV), LH Sean Doolittle (2-3, 3.23), RH Santiago Casilla (2-5, 3.57 with Giants), RH Ryan Dull (5-5, 2.42), RH John Axford (6-4, 3.97), RH Liam Hendriks (0-4, 3.76), LH Daniel Coulombe (3-1, 4.53)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter and Second Base. Triggs, Hahn and Montas are the top candidates to fill out the rotation. Montas, who turns 24 before the season, is the youngest and has the highest ceiling. Hahn is the only one with something resembling a track record of success in the majors. Triggs showed potential in five starts last year. Second base will belong to prospect Franklin Barreto at some point. For now the position belongs to Lowrie, who figures to become trade bait as the A's begin their annual migration toward mathematical elimination.
Outlook: It's been a long two years since the A's played postseason baseball. Rather than rebuilding outright, the A's spent their offseason stocking up on veteran position players. Their strength is a young rotation led by right-hander Sonny Gray ' another trade candidate who's coming off the worst of his four major league seasons (5-11, 5.69 ERA) and will miss time with a lat strain. If Cotton, Manaea and Triggs pick up where they left off, pitching won't be the problem. No team scored fewer runs than the A's in 2016, and it still isn't obvious that their lineup improved. Their home turf will be renamed in honor of Rickey Henderson when the Angels visit Oakland for the opener; maybe Rickey can hit leadoff, too.
PREVIEW
Twins start series vs. floundering A's ahead of trade deadline

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Two teams that could be trade partners will meet on the field when the contending Minnesota Twins and floundering Oakland Athletics begin a three-game series Friday night.

Recently acquired left-hander Jaime Garcia of the Twins will face A's rookie Daniel Gossett in the series opener.

The teams enter play Friday on similar downward spirals, but for different reasons.

The Twins (49-51) have played 14 straight games against fellow playoff hopefuls, losing 10. They are coming off a hard-fought, three-game sweep in Los Angeles at the hands of the Dodgers.

No team is in greater need of a break in the schedule, and the Twins get one. Their next five games are against two of the worst teams in the West -- they follow the Oakland trip with a two-game stopover in San Diego -- followed by a four-game series against struggling Texas to open a homestand.

"It happens. Nothing we can do about it," Twins right-hander Ervin Santana said after Wednesday's walk-off loss in Los Angeles, a game he left with a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning. "We have to go to Oakland and keep our minds positive."

That shouldn't be a problem. The A's are coming off an even more demoralizing series in which they blew two ninth-inning leads and lost consecutive games on walk-offs.

They were swept in the four-game series in Toronto to complete a 1-6 trip.

The late-game meltdowns can't be considered a surprise. The A's (44-57), well out of playoff contention, dealt two of their top relievers -- left-hander Sean Doolittle and righty Ryan Madson -- to Washington for a three-player package that featured two low-level minor-leaguers.

The next to go could be staff ace Sonny Gray, who is scheduled to pitch Sunday's series finale. The trade deadline is Monday afternoon.

"It can be difficult at times," Gray said Tuesday about taking the mound amid all the speculation. "We'll just have to see what happens."

The Twins have been buyers so far, adding the veteran Garcia earlier in the week. The A's have several veteran pieces other than Gray potentially available this weekend if things go well for Minnesota in the series and it believes it's still in the playoff chase.

Gossett pitched the A's most recent win, a 3-2 road triumph last Sunday against the New York Mets. He has never faced the Twins in eight career starts.

The Twins bombed A's pitching for eight home runs and 21 runs while taking two of three in Minnesota in May.

But two of the eight home run hitters -- Miguel Sano (sore left wrist) and Byron Buxton (strained left groin) -- have been out of the lineup and are no sure things to be available Friday.

Garcia will be making his Twins debut after having been acquired along with catcher Anthony Recker from the Atlanta Braves for 19-year-old right-hander Huascar Ynoa.

Garcia has faced the A's just once in his career, suffering the loss last season while allowing five runs in seven innings (6.43 ERA).
