| | | WASHINGTON: WASHINGTON (AP) - Thanks in part to No. 1 overall draft picks Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, the 2012 Washington Nationals were considered an up-and-coming team, perhaps a year or two away from contending.
So what did they do? Went out and led the majors with 98 wins.
Thanks to that quick rise, the 2013 Nationals became a popular pick to go to the World Series. So what did they do? Stumbled at the start and missed out on the playoffs.
Now here come the 2014 Nationals, featuring largely the same roster - including Strasburg on the mound, and Harper in left field, both feeling good after offseason surgery - and with rookie manager Matt Williams replacing Davey Johnson, he of the ''World Series or bust'' proclamation.
One key difference: The club knows what it's like to experience a truly disappointing, worse-than-they-were-supposed-to-be season for the first time since moving from Montreal in 2005.
''We got ahead of ourselves a little bit. My take on it was always: Last year in spring training, we had expectations on ourselves, really, for the first time, and we thought we were better, maybe, than we were,'' reliever Tyler Clippard said. ''We came into the season expecting to win, which is a good thing. But at the same time, we might not have went out there and earned it, like we should have.''
Yes, the team that got Strasburg and Harper thanks to consecutive 100-loss seasons is trying to deal with lofty goals.
''To see the organization from basically, literally, the ground up, improve is something I kind of take pride in, because when I signed, people would be like, `Oh, you play for the Expos and the Nationals,' and they'd be like, `Uh, OK, I don't know them,''' said shortstop Ian Desmond, drafted by Montreal in 2004. ''And now, it's like there's some pride behind playing for the Washington Nationals.''
| | SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''

*Nationals-Mariners Preview* ============================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Washington (76-57) at Seattle (72-61), 9:10 p.m. EDT
The NL East-leading Washington Nationals ended a three-game slide with a stunning offensive display.
After roughing up Seattle staff ace Felix Hernandez, the Nationals go for an 11th straight win over the Mariners in the middle game of this series Saturday night.
Washington (76-57) hammered Hernandez for four of its six homers Friday, en route to an 8-3 win at Safeco Field. That was a welcome performance after the Nationals plated nine runs while hitting .225 in their previous three.
"I don't think it was necessarily what he did, it's more what we did," shortstop Ian Desmond said. "We brought a good approach to the plate and we were able to fight off some tough pitches. He was making good pitches down in the zone and we forced him to get the ball up and we were able to make him pay."
Desmond was one of five Nationals to connect for at least one homer Friday, with Wilson Ramos getting two. Desmond is batting .409 (9 for 22) with two homers and four RBIs in five games, while Anthony Rendon is 7 for 16 (.438) with a pair of home runs and doubles in the past four.
The Nationals, who have outscored Seattle 49-25 in winning the last 10 matchups since an 8-1 loss on June 13, 2004, will hand the ball to Stephen Strasburg (10-10, 3.59 ERA).
Set to face the Mariners for the first time, Strasburg was knocked around for five runs and two homers in four innings of a 14-6 win over San Francisco on Sunday. The right-hander had allowed two runs in 15 innings while winning his two prior outings.
"You want to challenge them, but at the same time you have to focus on hitting your spots. I really wasn't doing that," Strasburg told MLB's official website.
Strasburg's 202 strikeouts are a career high, and five short of Gio Gonzalez's total in 2012 for the most by a Nationals pitcher since the franchise relocated from Montreal in 2005. Passing Gonzalez would make Strasburg the first pitcher in franchise history to get at least 208 since Javier Vazquez had 241 in 2003.
The Mariners are one game back of Detroit for the AL's second wild-card spot after dropping three of four games following a 10-3 stretch.
They're turning to Roenis Elias (9-11, 4.01) after pushing Chris Young's scheduled start back to Monday against Oakland in an effort to give him extra rest.
Elias could use some help, as he's 2-3 with a 2.05 ERA over his last six starts while being backed by two total runs in four of those games that ended in Mariners defeats. The left-hander hasn't received any runs of support in his past two games, losing both while allowing two runs with 10 strikeouts and 10 walks in nine innings.
He hasn't completed six innings in eight starts, and he battled through 101 pitches in five innings while allowing one run with four walks in a 2-0 loss to Texas on Monday.
"I'm not sure what's going on - can't quite put my finger on it, but we've got to get it straightened out," manager Lloyd McClendon said.
