| |  | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''
| | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''

The San Francisco Giants just snapped their recent woes behind a remarkable pitching performance.
Tim Hudson will try to build on that display Wednesday night as the Giants continue a four-game home set against the NL-worst Colorado Rockies.
San Francisco (69-62) had been outscored 23-10 during a three-game losing streak before Madison Bumgarner struck out 13 in a one-hitter in Tuesday's 3-0 victory. Buster Posey provided all the offense with a pair of homers, giving him four and seven RBIs over his last six games.
"That game was probably more impressive than a lot of no-hitters, that's how well (Bumgarner) threw," said manager Bruce Bochy, whose team remains 1 1/2 games up for the NL's second wild-card spot.
The Giants now turn to Hudson (9-9, 2.99 ERA), who allowed two runs - one earned - over 5 1-3 innings to win 10-3 at Washington on Friday. The right-hander had dropped seven of his previous eight decisions while posting a 4.71 ERA.
Hudson's road ERA now sits at 2.37, more than a full run lower than his home mark of 3.60. While he opened 5-0 with a 2.16 ERA at AT&T Park, he's since gone 0-4 with a 6.00 ERA in his last five starts there.
Hudson is 5-2 in 13 starts against the Rockies despite a 4.35 ERA, his second-highest mark against any NL club. He's gone without a decision in two appearances this year.
Charlie Blackmon is 5 for 9 in their matchups and Justin Morneau is 5 for 15 with a homer. Morneau, 8 for 15 with five RBIs in his last five games against the Giants, doubled off Bumgarner in the eighth inning for the Rockies' lone baserunner Tuesday.
Colorado (53-78) had won three straight and six of eight before getting shut out. While the Rockies are still 5-2 in their last seven in San Francisco, they are a major league-worst 4-24 on the road since June 16.
"It's unfortunate we had to lose," Morneau said. "They found a way to score some runs and we didn't."
Franklin Morales (5-7, 5.32) takes the ball for Colorado looking to bounce back from Friday's 13-5 loss to Miami. The left-hander was tagged for a season worst-tying six runs over four-plus innings, dropping to 0-3 over his last five starts.
Morales is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in two starts against the Giants this year. Michael Morse and Angel Pagan are a combined 0 for 13 in their matchups, but Hunter Pence is 5 for 11 with a homer and a double.
Pence has hit safely in all but one of his last 16 games against Colorado, batting .456 with five homers, five doubles, 14 RBIs and 14 runs. He's hit safely in eight straight overall, going 11 for 32 with two homers.
Posey has three homers and seven RBIs in his last four in the series. San Francisco is 13-3 this year when Posey goes deep.
Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario is uncertain to be available after missing the last four games with a sore wrist. Rosario, 4 for his last 25, has just one homer over a 28-game stretch.
