| |  | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
| | SEATTLE: SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was just the start. The Seattle Mariners didn't stop with one major splash in trying to catch up with the best in the AL West.
Even so, there remain many questions about whether Seattle's additions as a whole can improve a team coming off a 71-win season.
The moves made by Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik were in hopes of improving the Mariners and solidifying his own future after a shaky offseason that started with Eric Wedge's decision not to return as manager.
Lloyd McClendon is getting his second shot as a major league manager nine years after he was last leading a club in Pittsburgh. Along with Cano, Seattle signed outfielder Corey Hart, closer Fernando Rodney and traded for designated hitter Logan Morrison.
Despite those moves, there remain concerns about the depth of Seattle's rotation beyond ace Felix Hernandez and whether players the Mariners have been waiting for to finally pop can establish themselves as reliable, everyday starters.
Yet the Mariners believe they will be competitive in one of baseball's toughest divisions.
''We're ready to win. That's what it's all about,'' Hernandez said. ''We're ready to win ballgames in Seattle. We're ready to be in the playoffs, we're ready to do that.''

Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon is looking at the bigger picture in deciding to bypass Felix Hernandez in this three-game series finale in favor of Erasmo Ramirez.
Ramirez will be back with the Mariners when he looks to end a 12-start winless drought Wednesday against the visiting Texas Rangers.
Seattle (72-59) owns a one-half game lead over Detroit for the AL's second wild-card spot and it is Hernandez's turn to pitch. However, with an off day Thursday, McClendon chose to give his ace two extra days of rest and hand the ball to Ramirez for his first start since Aug. 10.
"Last month I managed for September," McClendon told MLB's official website. "This month I'm trying to manage for October, and I'm trying to keep the big picture in mind."
Ramirez (1-5, 4.06 ERA) will be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma for his sixth stint with the club. He won his first start April 1 over the Los Angeles Angels before going 0-5 with a 4.24 ERA in his next dozen.
"I think he's done a nice job. We've called him up a couple times and he's pitched well for us," McClendon said. "He's given us opportunities to win ballgames."
McClendon is correct about the right-hander's six starts in Seattle, where Ramirez is 0-3 despite a 2.84 ERA. Ramirez has no record with a 6.43 ERA in two outings against Texas this year.
Seattle evened this series with its 15th victory in 20 games Tuesday, 5-0. James Paxton pitched 6 2-3 innings, Robinson Cano homered and Endy Chavez drove in two runs.
"We're focused, we're playing good baseball," Chavez said. "We just need to continue to do that."
Chavez played right field in place of Chris Denorfia, scratched with a stiff neck.
Cano is 4 for 8 this year off Colby Lewis (8-11, 5.54), who starts Wednesday after posting a 5.82 ERA in losing his last three outings. Lewis is 0-2 with a 6.61 ERA in three starts against the Mariners this year.
One positive Wednesday for Lewis is that every outing of his slide was at home. He is 6-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 10 road starts compared to 2-8 with a 7.17 ERA in Arlington.
The Mariners, who already have one more win than they did in 2013, own the AL's second-best day record at 26-17.
Third baseman Kyle Seager needs one homer to reach 20 for the third consecutive season and join Ken Griffey Jr. and Jim Presley as the only Mariners with at least that many in three of their first four years.
Cano is fourth in majors with a .326 average to rank one spot behind the Rangers' Adrian Beltre, who is hitting .327 overall and is 17 for 37 in his last 10 games.
Texas (51-80) continues to look to the future with outfield prospect Michael Choice going 0 for 4 on Tuesday in his return to the big leagues. He was sent to the minors on July 7 after batting .177 in 69 games and says that he is eager to prove himself.
"Obviously my stats will be on the board but I'm not going to pay attention to that," he said. "I'm taking the approach that we're starting from scratch and it is a whole new season."
Choice is 3 for 33 lifetime against the Mariners.
