Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best. | | SAN DIEGO: 2016: 68-94, fifth place
Manager: Andy Green (second season)
Who's new? RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jered Weaver
Who's gone? RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Brandon Morrow, IF/OF Alexi Amarista, OF Jon Jay, OF Oswaldo Arcia, IF/OF Adam Rosales
Projected lineup: LF Travis Jankowski (.245, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 30 SB), CF Manuel Margot (.243, 0, 3 in 10 games), 1B Wil Myers (.259, 28, 94, 28), 3B Yangervis Solarte (.286, 15, 71), RF Hunter Renfroe (.371, 4, 14 in 11 games), 2B Ryan Schmipf (.217, 20, 51), C Austin Hedges (.125, 0, 1 in eight games), SS Luis Sardinas (.287, 2, 13)
Rotation: RH Jered Weaver (12-12, 5.06 ERA with Angels), RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-8, 4.81 with Angels and Braves), LH Clayton Richard (3-3, 2.52), RH Trevor Cahill (4-4, 2.74 with Cubs), LH Christian Friedrich (5-12, 4.80) or RH Luis Perdomo (9-10, 5.71)
Key relievers: RH Brandon Maurer (0-5, 4.52, 13/19 SV), RH Carter Capps (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery), LH Ryan Buchter (3-0, 2.86), LH Brad Hand (4-4, 2.92), RH Kevin Quackenbush (7-7, 3.92), LH Keith Hessler (1-0, 3.38 with Diamondbacks and Padres), RH Jarred Cosart (0-3, 6.03 with Marlins and Padres)
Hot spots: Bullpen. San Diego's version of a position battle is Green fighting the temptation to bench a young player in the middle of a long slump. Since the Padres are playing for next year anyway, watching bullpen roles shake out might be someone's version of fun. Maurer, the incumbent closer, blew six of 19 save opportunities last year. Hand and Buchter are a pair of workhorse lefties who wouldn't look out of place on a contending team. The wild card is Capps, who is healthy after missing all of 2016 following Tommy John surgery. A year before, he struck out 58 batters in 31 innings with the Marlins.
Outlook: Look up 'rebuilding team' in the dictionary. With only eight active players on the books for more than $1 million ' excluding the retained salaries of Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton Jr. and several other former Padres ' San Diego will field MLB's lowest payroll. Theirs is the youngest roster in baseball too, with perhaps only two players who have turned 30 by Opening Day. Their best prospects are college-age kids in the low minors. So what's to like? Prospect watchers have been awaiting the arrival of Margot and Renfroe for years. The backup catcher, Christian Bethancourt, might pitch. Capps has an unusual delivery. The Padres also ran the bases aggressively under Green, and stolen bases are fun. How's that for a marketing slogan? |
| | Rockies thinking wild card in last road game vs. Padres
SAN DIEGO -- The Colorado Rockies are headed home after Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres. They hope their final destination after the regular season is the playoffs. Colorado plays its last road game to wrap up its four-game series in San Diego. The Rockies have been blanked in three of their last four games, which has allowed some teams, most notably the Milwaukee Brewers, to stay within striking distance. The Rockies have a one-game lead over the Brewers for the second NL wildcard spot. "I know the teams that I want to lose when the highlights are on in the locker room," Rockies star Charlie Blackmon said. "But I don't actively seek out any of the standings. I think we still have a lot of baseball left to play and I think the most important thing is to not look back, but be looking forward." Blackmon's game looks grand even if the Rockies have dropped two of three to the Padres in this series. He leads the league in batting at .325 and is among the leaders in virtually every significant category. This year he became the 11th player in major league history to collect at least 130 runs, 30 doubles, 10 triples and 35 homers. The last player to accomplish that feat was Stan Musial in 1948. "To me it feels the same," Blackmon said about the stress of playing down the stretch. "I feel other people put that extra pressure on you. "I'm trying hard every time I go up there. It doesn't matter if we are 20 games under .500 or 20 games above it. I think that is the best place for a player to be mentally because they are not giving any at-bats away, good or bad. I think if I were to play every day and now all of a sudden because of where we are I have to things differently that means I've been doing something wrong all along." What's gone right for the Rockies is a powerful offense which features Blackmon, Nolan Arenado, DL LeMaieu, Trevor Story and others. But Black, who won 121 games pitching in the majors, knows a team is only good at its rotation. On Sunday, German Marquez (10-7, 4.41) is on the mound. "Your starting pitcher sets the tone over the course of the season," Black said. "There are games maybe where your starting pitchers falters and you can out slug someone. But you can't rely on that formula. You have to rely on starting pitcher, that is what wins." Marquez, who has split two career decisions versus the Padres, is tied for second among rookie with 10 wins, with his 142 strikeouts No. 1. The Padres counter with Luis Perdomo (8-10, 4.57), who is 0-3 lifetime against the Rockies. The right-hander leads the staff woith 16 quality starts. Over his last six outings, he's heaved a five consecutive quality starts and pitched to a 3.31 ERA. He beat the Diamondbacks in his last start, although he tied a career-high with six walks. He tiptoed around the damage enough to allow but two runs in 5 1/3 innings. "Love the fact he made big pitches," Padres manager Andy Green said. "He made big pitches when he had to for most of the day. He put himself in really tough situations. But I think you've got to be encouraged that he keeps getting out of those situations." |
