Manager: Craig Counsell (third season)
Who's new? 1B Eric Thames, 3B Travis Shaw, C Jett Bandy, RHP Neftali Feliz, RHP Joba Chamberlain, LHP Tommy Milone
Who's gone? 1B Chris Carter, C Martin Maldonado, OF Rymer Liriano, RHP Tyler Thornburg, RHP Blaine Boyer, LHP Chris Capuano
Projected lineup: 2B Jonathan Villar (.285, 19 HR, 63 RBI, 62 SB), SS Orlando Arcia (.219, 4, 17), LF Ryan Braun (.305, 30, 91, 16), 1B Eric Thames (.317, 40, 118, 13 SBs in Korea), RF Domingo Santana (.256, 11, 32), 3B Travis Shaw (.242, 16, 71 with Red Sox), CF Keon Broxton (.242, 9, 19, 23 SB), C Jett Bandy (.234, 8, 25 with Angels)
Rotation: Junior Guerra (9-3, 2.81 ERA), Zach Davies (11-7, 3.97), Matt Garza (4-8, 4.51), Wily Peralta (7-11, 3.86), Jimmy Nelson (8-16, 4.62) or Chase Anderson (9-11, 4.39) or Tommy Milone (3-5, 5.71 with Twins)
Key relievers: RHP Neftali Feliz (4-2, 3.52 with Pirates), RHP Corey Knebel (1-4, 4.68), RHP Carlos Torres (3-3, 2.73), RHP Jhan Marinez (0-1, 3.22), RHP Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 2.25 with Indians), RHP Jacob Barnes (0-1, 2.70), RHP Tyler Cravy (0-1, 2.86)
Hot spot: Fifth starter. Guerra and Davies began last season in the minors, then emerged as pleasant surprises in an otherwise long season. Now the Brewers have seven candidates for five rotation jobs. Nelson, who's led the staff in innings the last two years, might be wary of his two minor league options if he struggles out of the gate.
Outlook: No team was more active on the bases last season than the Brewers, whose 181 steals were the most by any team since 2009. Villar, Broxton and Hernan Perez were the primary thieves, and all return. The front office curiously chose not to bring back Carter after a 41-home run season. His replacement is Thames, who hasn't had a major league at-bat since 2012. Hitter-friendly Miller Park will do no favors to their pedestrian pitching staff, but the Brewers aren't expected to contend for at least another couple seasons. At least their offense will be entertaining in the meantime. | | PITTSBURGH: 2016: 78-83, third place
Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. |
| | Pirates get chance to make up ground on Brewers
PITTSBURGH -- If the Pittsburgh Pirates are going to keep their playoff hopes alive, the next four days are critical. The Pirates (44-48), fourth in the National League Central, play host to the first-place Milwaukee Brewers (52-42) for four games starting Monday night at PNC Park. Pittsburgh is seven games back of Milwaukee after winning two of three in a weekend series against the third-place St. Louis Cardinals, including a 4-3 walk-off win Sunday. The Brewers, launching a 10-game, 11-day road trip, are 11-3 their past 14 games. They began Sunday a season-best 11 games over .500 but missed a chance to sweep a weekend series from Philadelphia, falling 5-2. Still, Milwaukee seems to be solidifying its hold on first in what has been baseball's weakest division and one seemingly up for grabs most of the season. "I guess I'm surprised with where we're sitting with the lead," Brewers manager Craig Counsell told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I think everybody is in baseball. But I'm not surprised with how we've played. That hasn't surprised me. It's something we've fought for and had to earn." The Pirates, meanwhile, have won seven of their past nine. How they do the next four games could determine whether they have a realistic shot at the postseason, and it could play a role in what they decide to do with the non-waiver trade deadline looming. "We don't want to undersell, we also don't want to oversell, what this four-game series with the Brewers means," Pittsburgh general manager Neal Huntington said. "Every game's important for us, not only between now and the deadline but as we get beyond the deadline, every game matters. And that's one of the things that we need to move forward with. "Obviously an 0-4 (series against Milwaukee) changes the dynamic pretty significant. We go 4-0, it changes the dynamic in a much more positive direction." On Tuesday, Pittsburgh outfielder Starling Marte is eligible to return from an 80-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs. He is expected to be slotted in left field, with Andrew McCutchen remaining in center and Gregory Polanco in right. "That's going to give us a boost," Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer said of Marte's return. Pittsburgh is 4-3 against Milwaukee this season, taking two of three at home May 5-7 and splitting a four-game set on the road June 19-22. Left-hander Brent Suter (1-1, 2.96 ERA) is scheduled to start Monday for Milwaukee. He will be making his 11th appearance and fourth start in his fifth stint with the Brewers. Suter made his past two starts in place of injured Chase Anderson, pitching well both times. Most recently, he gave up two runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings, with five strikeouts and one walk, in a July 7 no-decision, a game the Brewers eventually lost to the New York Yankees 5-3. Counsell made it clear Suter had earned more starts after the All-Star break. "Brent was outstanding," Counsell told the Journal Sentinel. "He pitched wonderfully; it's fun to see. It's really important moving forward that we find a guy that can fill that spot and do a really nice job. There's going to be quite a few starts in that spot." Suter has never started against the Pirates. In four relief appearances against them last season, he allowed three hits and no runs in 5 1/3 innings. Suter will be matched against right-hander Chad Kuhl (3-6, 4.96 ERA). Pitching on two days' rest in the final game before the All-Star break as a last-minute sub, Kuhl tossed three innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs. On July 6, he gave up three runs (two earned) in seven innings during a win at Philadelphia. Kuhl is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in four career starts against the Brewers, including 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two starts this season. |
