KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''
OAKLAND: OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Before the season has even begun, the Oakland Athletics are dealing with a devastating injury that could affect their chances of chasing a third straight AL West title.
Right-hander Jarrod Parker, who had been the projected opening day starter, was lost to a season-ending elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery - his second such procedure.
Like every year with this low-budget club, somebody always seems to step in and fill the void. Whether that will be enough for Bob Melvin's bunch in a much-improved division is to be determined.
Even before Parker went down, Oakland considered its club an underdog despite winning the last two AL West crowns.

*Astros-Athletics Preview* ==========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Houston (42-58) at Oakland (61-38), 10:05 p.m. EDT

Jose Altuve's streak of successful stolen base attempts is over, but the Houston second baseman might find comfort in knowing his team has put together a nice little winning streak against the top team in baseball.

The Astros will try for a fourth straight win over the Athletics on Wednesday night in Oakland while also clinching a series victory in the middle game of this set.

Prior to winning three straight against Oakland (61-38), Houston had a 5-25 all-time record in the series.

The clubs opened this series Tuesday with Houston (42-58) winning 3-2 behind L.J. Hoes' homer with one out in the top of the 12th, snapping Oakland's six-game home winning streak over its AL West foe.

The Astros have now won five of seven on the road with a .308 batting average to catch the attention of the A's.

"They're a big league club. They're going to win, they're going to compete," Oakland catcher John Jaso said.

Altuve was caught stealing in the 10th, snapping a franchise-record streak of 28 successful attempts dating to May 17. The All-Star, though, is 7 for 16 at the plate over his last three games after a three-hit night.

Former A's slugger Chris Carter also collected three hits and is batting .360 with six home runs and 13 RBIs over his last 13 games.

Jesse Chavez will try to get the A's back on track.

Chavez (7-6, 3.14 ERA) gave up three runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 6-2 loss in Seattle on July 12. He walked two and has issued 15 free passes over his last five starts, making him question his repetition.

"It was just one of those days where I fought myself mechanically," Chavez told MLB's official website.

Chavez has been much better at home, going 4-2 with a 2.13 ERA in eight starts.

He's 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA in two starts against the Astros this season, winning when he held them to a run and four hits over six innings at home May 20. Altuve is 4 for 10 against Chavez while Carter is 1 for 9.

Brad Peacock takes the ball for Houston.

Peacock (3-6, 4.39) won't need to do much to improve on his last start after recording only one out in an 11-0 home loss to Boston on July 13. The right-hander allowed a run, two hits - including a home run - and surrendered a walk while hitting a batter.

He might also be out to prove to manager Bo Porter that he's able to work his way through struggles.

"I definitely was not very happy," Peacock said of being on such a short leash. "I feel like I can get out of that jam right there. I had only given up one run at the time. It kind of (stinks). I really don't know why I came out. I felt fine. I was having some control issues there."

Prior to that, he'd pitched rather well with a 3-1 record and 3.18 ERA over eight starts.

Against Oakland this season, Peacock has had more prolonged control struggles with nine walks in 10 innings over two starts contributing to an 0-1 mark with a 4.50 ERA.

Prior to Tuesday's contest, Oakland's Josh Reddick was activated from a second stint on the disabled list because of an injured right knee.

Houston slugger George Springer has missed two games with soreness in his right leg.
