KEY GAME INFORMATION
TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
NY YANKEES: NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter is saying goodbye. Masahiro Tanaka is saying hello.
Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran are new to the Bronx; David Robertson is new to the closer's role. And Alex Rodriguez is nowhere to be seen.
Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte have retired, and Robinson Cano has moved to Seattle.
After missing the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, the New York Yankees will look a whole lot different. And for the first time since 1998, they don't have baseball's highest payroll.
''I think it is probably the biggest transition I've been through,'' manager Joe Girardi says.
For only the second time in team history and the first time since 1947, every position on opening day other than the mound will be manned by a different Yankees player on opening day than in New York's previous opener.
New York's forgettable 2013 season began with an 8-2 loss to Boston, with Kevin Youkilis at first, Cano at second, Eduardo Nunez at shortstop, Jayson Nix at third, Francisco Cervelli behind the plate, Vernon Wells in left, Brett Gardner in center and Ichiro Suzuki in right.
The only holdover for Tuesday's opener at Houston figures to be Gardner, who has shifted to left. The rest of the starting lineup figures to have McCann behind the plate, Mark Teixeira at first, Brian Roberts at second, Jeter at shortstop, Kelly Johnson at third, Ellsbury in center and Beltran in right.
CC Sabathia will be the constant on the mound. He's coming off the poorest of his 13 major league seasons at 14-13 with a 4.78 ERA.
''Nobody wants to go through that again,'' he says. ''It sticks with me a lot. Just being disappointed in not being able to help this team win. I feel like if I could have been a little better we might have made the playoffs. I blamed myself for a long time in the offseason and now I'm over it and ready to go this year.

By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor

Texas (40-59) at New York (50-48), 7:05 p.m. EDT

Missing the playoffs in two straight years for the first time in Derek Jeter's career is not the sendoff the New York Yankees want to give their retiring captain.

General manager Brian Cashman is trying to prevent it, and his most recent move paid off immediately against the Texas Rangers.

After coming over in a trade that the Yankees hope will bolster the offense, Chase Headley gave them a victory and now makes his first start at third base Wednesday night in the third of a four-game set.

The biggest injury concerns for the Yankees (51-48) are in the starting rotation, but several ailments have also sidelined Mark Teixeira and Carlos Beltran at times. Teixeira, who has a team-leading 17 homers and 48 RBIs, is out with a strained back muscle.

Cashman tried to address the pitching concerns by adding Brandon McCarthy in a trade with Arizona early this month before acquiring Headley from San Diego on Tuesday.

Headley, who spent his first eight seasons with the Padres, was hitting .229 with seven homers and 32 RBIs but had a .339 average over his last 13 games in the NL.

He came on as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning Tuesday and went 0 for 3 before delivering a run-scoring single in the 14th that gave New York a 2-1 victory and a fourth win in five games out of the All-Star break.

"Unbelievable," Headley said. "I'm excited to be here. I can't wait to help, and just to be a part of this great franchise."

The 30-year-old switch-hitter could benefit from the short porch in right field at Yankee Stadium after playing in the cavernous Petco Park in San Diego. He has just 87 career homers, 58 of which have come from the left side of the plate.

New York, which has put up the second-fewest runs in the AL (393), was held scoreless for 17 innings by a Rangers team with the highest ERA in the AL before tying it in the 13th after Texas had gone ahead.

Helping to fill the gaps in a battered New York rotation missing four of its initial starters is David Phelps (4-4, 3.87 ERA), who has posted a 2.52 ERA over his last four outings.

The right-hander went 6 1-3 innings in Friday's 4-3 win over Cincinnati, giving up three runs - two earned - with seven strikeouts for his first victory since June 19.

He'll be opposed by Yu Darvish (9-5, 2.88), one of the few bright spots - along with Adrian Beltre - during a trying season for Texas (40-60). Darvish, however, has seemed far more hittable since mid-June after a dominant start to 2014.

After going 7-2 with a 2.11 ERA through 12 starts, the right-hander is 2-3 with a 4.66 mark over his previous six, though he does have a pair of stellar outings in that span. Darvish struck out 12 and allowed one run over 6 2-3 innings in a 5-1 win at Toronto on Friday that ended his team's eight-game skid.

"Guys like Darvish, I don't care what your lineup is, they're gonna cut you up good and limit your opportunities," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons told MLB's official website.

Jeter hit his 535th double in the ninth inning Tuesday to snap a tie with Lou Gehrig atop the team's all-time list.

Rangers catcher Geovany Soto (groin) was placed on the disabled list Tuesday after playing in three games since returning from knee surgery that had kept him out all season.
