| |  | SAN FRANCISCO: HITTING: The Giants scored the second-fewest runs in the majors. But the additions of OF MELKY CABRERA (.305 BA, 18 HR, 87 RBI, 102 runs) and OF ANGEL PAGAN (32 SB) at the top of the order will certainly help. C BUSTER POSEY's surgically repaired ankle should be fully healed for the start of the season, and the 25-year-old's .368 OBP is certainly needed. 3B PABLO SANDOVAL was the team's best hitter in 2011 (.315 BA, 23 HR, 70 RBI) and was the only legitimate power source. The right side of the infield consists of veteran players past their prime. 1B AUBREY HUFF had his worst season, hitting .246 with 12 HR, but the 35-year-old will continue to bat in the middle of the lineup. 2B FREDDY SANCHEZ, 34, missed 50+ games for the third straight year as he suffered a torn labrum. SS BRANDON CRAWFORD has a slick glove but he's not close to being a legitimate major-league hitter (.204 career BA). OF BRANDON BELT, 23, has future star potential, but will be in a reserve role. OF NATE SCHIERHOLTZ (.756 OPS) provides a reliable bat in right field.
STARTING PITCHING: San Francisco ranked second in the majors in ERA (3.28), strikeouts (5.4 per game) and Opp. BA (.237). TIM LINCECUM was the ace once again with a 2.74 ERA and 220 strikeouts, but carried a sub-.500 record (13-14). Including playoffs, Lincecum has thrown an average of 230 innings per season since 2008. MATT CAIN also had a phenomenal year, carting a 2.88 ERA, team-best 1.08 WHIP and fanning 179 batters. He allowed only nine home runs in 221.2 innings of work. 22-year-old lefty MADISON BUMGARNER had a solid first full season, finishing with a 3.21 ERA, and a 4.2 K-to-BB ratio (191 strikeouts, 46 walks). RYAN VOGELSONG was an unbelievable story, returning to the majors for the first time since 2006 and going 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA. Although he's 34, his arm has plenty of innings left. BARRY ZITO will likely earn the final spot in the rotation as prospect ERIC SURKAMP gets more seasoning in Triple-A. Zito posted a career-worst 5.87 ERA while Surkamp carted a 1.84 WHIP in six starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: The success of the San Francisco bullpen hinges on BRIAN WILSON, who had a down year (1.47 WHIP, 54 K, 31 BB) because of elbow problems. Surgery was not required for his ailment, so expect a nice bounce-back season from this elite closer. If Wilson gets injured again, SERGIO ROMO could get called upon in the late innings. But even if he doesn't save a game, he still has plenty of value as a set-up man, notching a gaudy 13.1 strikeout rate and 0.71 WHIP last year. In 48 innings, he struck out 70 batters and only walked five. JEREMY AFFELDT is the top lefty in the Giants pen. He notched a strong 2.63 ERA and also tallied a career-best 1.15 WHIP last year. | | NY YANKEES: HITTING: Despite his decline from mediocrity into downright counter-productivity, SS DEREK JETER gets to hit atop the best lineup in baseball. Off an MVP-caliber season, OF CURTIS GRANDERSON is a true star. His average is mediocre, but his power is elite and the Yankees are letting him run when on base. After two years with a sub-.260 average, 1B MARK TEIXEIRA's talent seems to be fading. He still puts up huge power numbers playing in a bandbox. Coming off knee and thumb injuries, 3B ALEX RODRIGUEZ is a serious injury risk hitting in the middle of this lineup. 2B ROBINSON CANO will once again see as many RBI chances as anyone. He's been great in those situations the past two seasons. OFs NICK SWISHER and BRETT GARDNER offer power and SBs, respectively, though the Yankees may look to upgrade if they continue to post lackluster numbers. C RUSSELL MARTIN will get plenty of playing time now that Jesus Montero is in Seattle. Veteran slugger RAUL IBANEZ is the new DH in town, and will love hitting towards the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium.
STARTING PITCHING: CC SABATHIA struggled late last year and has logged a ridiculous number of innings over the past five years. He's a top-10 starter in the majors, but is starting to pass his prime. Newcomers HIROKI KURODA and MICHAEL PINEDA will both stabilize what was a shaky rotation last year. Kuroda, 37, posted a 3.07 ERA with the Dodgers and the 23-year-old Pineda has unlimited upside, fanning 173 batters in 171 innings with Seattle last season. IVAN NOVA benefitted from nearly nine runs of support per game. He keeps the ball down often enough to thrive in the Bronx, just without many strikeouts. PHIL HUGHES' stuff has regressed greatly since his days as a top prospect. He's trying to overcome conditioning problems this offseason. MANNY BANUELOS and DELLIN BETANCES are great prospects who may get a chance to start MLB games later this season.
RELIEF PITCHING: Trust MARIANO RIVERA to stay dominant until proven wrong. He was better in 2011 than he was in 2010 despite some velocity slippage. DAVID ROBERTSON has a firm hold on eighth-inning duties after an All-Star season. He's second in line for saves. RAFAEL SORIANO wasn't a total bust, as he did just fine after a rough April. He's settled into the seventh-inning role since Robertson is more trusted that he is. After Tommy John surgery, JOBA CHAMBERLAIN is aiming to be back this June. Middle reliever CORY WADE was reliable last year, and has a chance to rack up some vulture wins if he keeps going strong. |

Desperation seems to be setting in for the New York Yankees.
Perhaps a return home can provide a lift, particularly at the plate.
While the Yankees attempt to solve their offensive woes, CC Sabathia attempts to extend his home winning streak to four games Friday night against the San Francisco Giants.
New York (80-73) is 3 1/2 games back of Tampa Bay and Texas for one of the AL's two wild-card spots, and it must also overtake Cleveland, Baltimore and Kansas City to reach the playoffs.
The Yankees have nine games left, starting with three games each at home against San Francisco (71-82) and Tampa Bay before visiting Houston to finish the season.
"We've got to run the table, there's no way around it," infielder Mark Reynolds said. "We've got some tough games coming up. The Giants have good pitching, Tampa's got good pitching. We've got to have a good homestand and hopefully go into Houston with a chance.
"There's only so many 'Get 'em tomorrows' left."
That mantra is ending since the Yankees have dropped five of six while batting .184 with 13 runs. Their offensive futility continued with five hits in Thursday's 6-2 loss at last-place Toronto.
"It's frustrating," manager Joe Girardi said. "We haven't swung the bats that well for the last week."
They have at home, hitting .285 with 22 homers and averaging 6.0 runs while winning 16 of 22 there.
Sabathia (13-13, 4.90 ERA) has also found some success at home, winning three straight starts despite a 4.74 ERA. He's lost his last two outings - both on the road - while giving up nine runs in 13 1-3 innings.
"It's very frustrating, because everybody keeps telling me I'm close, but I don't see it," Sabathia told the team's official website. "I want results and I know the team wants results. I know the fans want results. It's just tough not being able to deliver."
He's won both career starts versus the Giants with a 1.59 ERA, and is facing them for the first time since a road win with Milwaukee in 2008.
The Giants will counter the two-time Cy Young Award winner with one of their own in Tim Lincecum (10-13, 4.40).
Unlike Sabathia, Lincecum is putting together a strong stretch, going 4-0 with a 3.77 ERA in five starts. It's the right-hander's longest winning streak since going 6-0 over nine games bridging 2009 and 2010.
He got a great deal of help in order to keep his streak going Saturday, allowing three runs with six strikeouts in six innings of a 19-3 road victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Facing the Yankees for the first time, Lincecum is 1-5 with a 5.93 ERA over eight interleague starts in two years.
He's two strikeouts shy of becoming the seventh pitcher to get 1,500 with the Giants, and the first since Gaylord Perry in 1971.
San Francisco has won five of six following Thursday's 2-1 victory over the New York Mets. Rookie Juan Perez, who went to high school in New York, had a season-high three hits, a walk and an RBI in four plate appearances in front of family and friends.
He's looking forward to doing it again in front of even more relatives in the Bronx.
"That will be a crazy series for me, tickets-wise," the outfielder said.
Buster Posey is in a 1-for-21 slump over his last six games after going 0 for 10 in three versus the Mets.
The Giants will be the first team to finish with a losing record the season after winning the World Series since St. Louis in 2007.
