Manager: Mike Matheny (sixth season)
Who's new? OF Dexter Fowler, C Eric Fryer, LH Brett Cecil
Who's gone? 1B Brandon Moss, OF Matt Holliday, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker, RHP Jaime Garcia, RHP Seth Maness, RHP Jerome Williams
Projected lineup: CF Dexter Fowler (.276, 13 HR, 48 RBI, 13 SB with Cubs), SS Aledmys Diaz (.300, 17, 65), 1B Matt Carpenter (.271, 21, 68), RF Stephen Piscotty (.273, 22, 85), C Yadier Molina (.307, 8, 58), 3B Jedd Gyorko (.243, 30, 59), 2B Kolten Wong (.240, 5, 23), LF Randal Grichuk (.240, 24, 68)
Rotation: RH Carlos Martinez (16-9, 3.04 ERA), RH Adam Wainwright (13-9, 4.62), RH Mike Leake (9-12, 4.69), RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 5.09), RH Lance Lynn (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery)
Key relievers: RH Seung-hwan Oh (6-3, 1.92 ERA 19/23 SV), LH Kevin Siegrist (6-3, 2.77), RH Trevor Rosenthal (2-4, 4.46, 14/18 SV), LH Brett Cecil (1-7, 3.93 with Blue Jays), RH Jonathan Broxton (4-2, 4.30), RH Matt Bowman (2-5, 3.46), RH Miguel Socolovich (1-0, 2.00)
Hot spots: Rotation. The back end looked like a big leap of faith when spring training began. Wainwright and Wacha are coming off their worst seasons. Another 2013 World Series mainstay, Lynn, didn't pitch last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. Then, on the first day of camp, 22-year-old right-hander Alex Reyes learned he needed Tommy John himself. That leaves a lot of question marks after ace Martinez ' more than any Cardinals staff has faced in years.
Outlook: This 40-man roster hints at a team in transition. Venerable 34-year-old catcher Molina is still St. Louis' biggest star. Reyes' injury hurts the youth movement, but the Cardinals are still stacked with talented 20-something sluggers ' Piscotty, Diaz, Gyorko and Grichuk ' who could emerge as household names. Adding Fowler's speed and patience should complement an already deep lineup. The pitching staff is a different matter. Barring a big resurgence from Wainwright, Lynn and Wacha (or a big trade) it's hard to see the Cardinals contending for more than a wild card spot in the Cubs' shadow. | | NY METS: 2016: 87-75, second place
Manager: Terry Collins (seventh season)
Who's new? No one of note
Who's gone? 1B James Loney, IF/OF Kelly Johnson, OF Alejandro De Aza, RHP Bartolo Colon, LHP Jonathon Niese
Projected lineup: CF Curtis Granderson (.237, 30 HR, 59 RBI), 3B David Wright (.226, 7, 14 in 37 games), LF Yoenis Cespedes (.280, 31, 86), RF Jay Bruce (.250, 33, 99 with Reds and Mets), 2B Neil Walker (.282, 23, 55), SS Asdrubal Cabrera (.280, 23, 62), 1B Lucas Duda (.229, 7, 23 in 47 games), C Travis d'Arnaud (.247, 4, 15)
Rotation: RH Noah Syndergaard (14-9, 2.60 ERA), RH Jacob deGrom (7-8, 3.04), RH Matt Harvey (4-10, 4.86), LH Steven Matz (9-8, 3.40), RH Zack Wheeler or RH Robert Gsellman (4-2, 2.42) or RH Seth Lugo (5-2, 2.67)
Key relievers: RH Jeurys Familia (3-4, 2.55, 51/56 SV), RH Addison Reed (4-2, 1.97), RH Hansel Robles (6-4, 3.48), LH Jerry Blevins (4-2, 2.79), RH Fernando Salas (3-7, 3.91)
Hot spots: First base and third base. Duda missed 115 games last season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. When healthy, the veteran first baseman slugged a career-low .714. Former first-round draft pick Dominic Smith, 21, could be in position to battle for the starting spot soon. He'll likely begin the season at Triple-A. Franchise third baseman Wright doesn't have a hot prospect pushing him out the door, but how much game does he have left? The perennial All-Star only began throwing a baseball in February after an eight-month recovery from neck surgery. Wright had a degenerative back and has only played 75 games the last two years. Getting a full season from him at age 34 would be a shock.
Outlook: The Mets' championship window opened with a surprise World Series run in 2015, and their front office seems convinced it's still open. The club invested four years and $110 million to keep Yoenis Cespedes in the outfield. The Mets also exercised club options on Jay Bruce and Jose Reyes, and brought Neil Walker back on a qualifying offer. The result? Almost everyone returns from a club that lost a wild-card game to the Giants last October. The franchise is oozing young pitching ' Syndergaard might be the best right-hander on the planet ' but another World Series appearance might be too much to expect from a team that ranked 25th in runs per game last season. |
| | Cardinals' Wacha hopes to keep rolling vs. Mets
NEW YORK -- On Tuesday night, the New York Mets will try to beat Michael Wacha and the St. Louis Cardinals. After that, the Mets will hope their injury-plagued young starting pitchers can emulate Wacha the rest of this season and into 2018. Wacha (6-3, 4.10 ERA) will look to win his fourth consecutive start Tuesday night when the Cardinals face the Mets in the second game of a four-game series at Citi Field. Rafael Montero (1-5, 5.77 ERA) will start for New York. St. Louis won the opener 6-3 on Monday as Paul DeJong hit a two-run shot and Tommy Pham added a three-run homer in a six-run, sixth-inning rally. The Cardinals (45-47) have been careful with Wacha, who missed time in 2014 and 2016 with shoulder injuries. Wacha is the only St. Louis starter to throw fewer than 100 innings this season, but the caution has paid off over his last three starts, during which the right-hander has a 1.53 ERA. He struck out a season-high nine batters in each of his past two outings, including his most recent appearance July 6, when Wacha gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings as the Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 4-3. In addition, Wacha hasn't lost in his past seven starts, during which he is 4-0 with a 4.25 ERA. "Just health, it really is that simple," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Wacha. "When he's healthy, his stuff is that good. You have guys over here, you've watched this (Mets) staff the same way -- when they're healthy, they can be overpowering at times." Unfortunately for the Mets, those times have been few and far between this season. New York's season was summed up Monday, when right-handers Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard each began throwing programs. Harvey has been out a month with a right shoulder injury, while Syndergaard hasn't pitched since April 30 due to a torn right lat. Four other starters -- Robert Gsellman, Seth Lugo, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler -- have spent time on the disabled list for the Mets, who expected to contend for the National League East title but are 41-49 and all but buried in both the division and wild-card races. "I don't know when I'll get them back, or if I'll get them back," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Harvey and Syndergaard on Monday afternoon. "So right now I've got to focus on making sure Zack's OK and, Raffy tomorrow (returns to) the rotation and pitches like he did before the All-Star break, when he was starting. So those are my main concerns right now." Montero was viewed as no better than the Mets' eighth-best starting pitcher when spring training started, but he will be making his fifth start and 19th appearance of the year Tuesday night. He offered some encouragement in his most recent start July 2, when he took the loss after giving up four runs over a season-high 6 1/3 innings as the Mets fell to the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1. Montero pitched one more time before the All-Star break on July 8, when he faced the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time in his career and allowed one run in two-thirds of an inning of relief in the Mets' 4-1 loss at Busch Stadium. Wacha is 3-1 with a 2.74 ERA in four career starts against the Mets. |
