Manager: A.J. Hinch (third season)
Who's new? RF Josh Reddick, CF Carlos Beltran, LF Nori Aoki, C Brian McCann, RHP Charlie Morton
Who's gone? C Jason Castro, INF Luis Valbuena, OF Colby Rasmus, RHP Doug Fister
Projected lineup: CF George Springer (.261, 29 HR, 82 RBI), 2B Jose Altuve (.338, 24, 96, 30 SB), SS Carlos Correa (.274, 20, 96, 13 SB), DH Carlos Beltran (.295, 29, 93 with Yankees and Rangers), C Brian McCann (.242, 20, 58 with Yankees) or Evan Gattis (.251, 32, 72), 3B Alex Bregman (.264, 8, 34 in 49 games), RF Josh Reddick (.281, 10, 37 with A's and Dodgers), 1B Yulieski Gurriel (.262, 3, 15), LF Nori Aoki (.283, 4, 28 with Mariners)
Rotation: LH Dallas Keuchel (9-12, 4.55 ERA), RH Collin McHugh (13-10, 4.34), RH Mike Fiers (11-8, 4.48), RH Lance McCullers (6-5, 3.22), RH Charlie Morton (1-1, 4.15 in four games with Phillies)
Key relievers: RH Ken Giles (2-5, 4.11, 15/20 SV), RH Luke Gregerson (4-3, 3.28, 15/21 SV), RH Will Harris (1-2, 2.25, 12/15 SV), RH Chris Devenski (4-4, 2.16), LH Tony Sipp (1-2, 4.95), RH Michael Feliz (8-1, 4.43)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and catcher. Hamstring issues limited 33-year-old Morton to four starts with the Phillies last season. That didn't stop the Astros from signing him to a two-year contract worth at least $14 million. Now, veteran Fiers and 24-year-old Joe Musgrove are on the bubble for the fifth starter's job. McCann and Gattis give the Astros a pair of veteran catchers with slugging potential. McCann has fewer weaknesses behind the plate; Gattis is the better all-around hitter. With Beltran aboard as the primary designated hitter, McCann and Gattis won't both be in the lineup on most nights.
Outlook: After slipping to third place in the AL West last year, the Astros' front office decided to double down on dingers rather than upgrade a rotation that lacks a true ace. The result: A lineup with eight potential 20-home run hitters, including possible MVP candidates in Altuve and Correa. Everyone returns from an impressive young bullpen with high strikeout potential. If the Astros are in contention by the trade deadline, the front office should have the financial flexibility to add a front-line starter. Then again, if Dallas Keuchel looks like the pitcher who won a Cy Young Award in 2015, Houston might not have a problem. | | MINNESOTA: 2016: 59-103, fifth place.
Manager: Paul Molitor (third season).
He's Here: C Jason Castro, RHP Matt Belisle, SS Ehire Adrianza, LHP Craig Breslow.
He's Outta Here: 3B Trevor Plouffe, C Kurt Suzuki, LHP Tommy Milone, RHP Pat Light.
Projected lineup: 2B Brian Dozier (.268, 42, 99, 18/20 SBs), RF Max Kepler (.235, 17, 63), CF Byron Buxton (.225, 10 HRs, 38 RBIs, 118 Ks in 298 ABs), 1B Joe Mauer (.261, 11, 49), 3B Miguel Sano (.236, 25, 66, 178 Ks in 437 ABs), DH Kennys Vargas (.230, 10, 20 in 152 ABs), LF Eddie Rosario (.269, 10, 32), C Jason Castro (.210, 11, 32 with Houston), SS Jorge Polanco (.282, 4, 27 in 245 ABs).
Rotation: RH Ervin Santana (7-11, 3.38 ERA, 149 Ks), RH Phil Hughes (1-7, 5.95, 11 HRs, 11 starts), LH Hector Santiago (3-6, 5.58, 13 HRs, 11 starts after trade with Angels), RH Kyle Gibson (6-11, 5.07, 1.561 WHIP), LH Adalberto Mejia (rookie).
Key relievers: RH Brandon Kintzler (0-2, 3.15, 17/20 saves), RH Matt Belisle (0-0, 1.76 in 40 games for Nationals), RH Ryan Pressly (6-7, 3.70, 1 save in 72 games), LH Taylor Rogers (3-1, 3.96, 64 Ks in 57 games), LH Craig Breslow (0-2, 4.50 in 15 games for Marlins).
Hot Spot: Starting Rotation. The resuscitation of a team with the worst record in the majors last season must begin with starting pitching that ranked 30th out of 30 in wins (37), ERA (5.39) and strikeouts (655). Hughes, Santiago, Gibson and Berrios will all be counted on to make 2016 the aberration and not the standard. Adding Castro, who has a strong reputation for game calling and pitch framing, probably can't hurt. There's enough depth in the group at least to give the Twins a chance to return to respectability as new baseball chief Derek Falvey continues to try to revamp organizational philosophy and process for the long term. The bullpen appears more vulnerable than the rotation, despite being bolstered by the addition of the veteran Belisle. Three-time All-Star closer Glen Perkins is still working his way back from surgery last year to repair a torn labrum and will likely land on the disabled list to start the season. Kintzler fared well in his place, but doesn't have a track record.
Outlook: The Twins ranked a respectable sixth in the American League in total bases and eighth in OPS despite their abysmal record last year. Buxton's sparkling September, following a second straight frustrating summer, restored his and the club's confidence in the 2012 second overall draft pick. Dozier probably hit his power ceiling in 2016, but if Buxton and Sano can strike out less and get on base more there's the potential in place for a productive offense. Vargas hit his way back into contention for the DH spot with a decent finish to 2016, but the pressure is on him to prove he's worth a spot in the lineup with a strong performance this spring by Park, who struggled badly to adjust to major league pitching in his arrival from South Korea last year. |
| | Astros want to keep wins coming against Twins
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Houston Astros are having a lot of fun. The Minnesota Twins are trying to figure out how to recover from two tough losses. The feeling surrounding both teams seems very different right now, but both are still sitting in first place as they meet on Tuesday. "We're always having fun," Houston shortstop Carlos Correa said after the Astros came back from an 8-2 deficit on Monday to beat Minnesota 16-8. "We're having a great season. We're not going to let one game bring us down. "At the same time, we want to win every single game. It doesn't matter what the score is, we're going to keep putting great at-bats together, and I think that's what we did tonight." The Twins' overworked bullpen allowed a franchise-record 14 runs. The Astros were flying high after an 11-run eighth inning gave them a seventh win in eight games. Frustration and elation marked the first game of the series. "We'll find out," Minnesota reliever Ryan Pressly said of how the team bounces back after the Monday loss. "But it's a good group of guys out here. We've got a way to keep bad stuff out of our minds and just keep grinding." The Twins were coming off a 15-inning loss on Sunday to the Tampa Bay Rays. Yet despite the two defeats, Minnesota (26-21) still leads the American League Central by a game over the Cleveland Indians. Houston (36-16) owns the major leagues' best record and is a major-league-best 16-6 on the road. The Astros hold an 11-game cushion in the AL West. If things weren't going well enough for the Astros, they now believe they can draw on Monday's comeback as they continue this season. "Moving forward, we've got to know that we're never out of a game," outfielder Josh Reddick said. "This is one game we're going to have to look back to the rest of the year." The reverse could be true for the Twins. "Time will tell," Twins manager Paul Molitor said regarding whether the team will experience a hangover from the Monday loss. "I know that we're still having to maneuver our bullpen differently because of how they've been used here the last couple days." Houston will start Mike Fiers (1-2, 5.21 ERA) on Tuesday. The right-hander is getting a second chance in the rotation after Charlie Morton went on the disabled list. Fiers was moved to the bullpen to make room for Monday's starter, Brad Peacock, in the rotation, but Fiers was back as a starter a day later because of Morton's injury. "He's come out of a few games early, that will give him an indication that I feel like he's struggled a little bit," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said of talking with Fiers about going back to a starting role. "When you have the conversation that I had with him about coming out of the rotation, he knows he's pitching to keep his spot in the rotation. "Putting him back in there, the hard conversation was more pull him out of the rotation, keeping him motivated, giving him a few things to work on in order to get back in the rotation. "And then circumstances made it to where he was back in the rotation in 24 hours. I don't want him to forget some of the things that we talked to him about that he needs to do better. Fiers is 3-1 with a 3.16 ERA in seven career games, six starts, against Minnesota. In two outings against the Twins last season, Fiers allowed eight runs in 9 2/3 innings. The Twins' hopes of turning their fortunes quickly are on the right arm of young Jose Berrios. The team's top pitching prospect, Berrios has dazzled in three starts since being recalled from Triple-A, going 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA. He has struck out 22 and walked just four in 21 2/3 innings. Berrios has also worked into the seventh inning in each of his three starts, which helps Minnesota's bullpen. He lost his only career start against Houston, allowing six runs in two innings on Aug. 11, 2016. Minnesota could be without center fielder Byron Buxton, who left the Monday game with a cut on his left ring finger. X-rays were negative. "It could've been worse than it was, so I'm blessed and thankful that it's only a laceration," Buxton said. "Hopefully, the swelling will just go down and I'll be back out there tomorrow." |
