| | | CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - From rock bottom last season to contention this year? The Chicago White Sox see no reason why it can't happen.
They're ready to put last season's 99-loss wreck behind them and make a jump at least back to respectability, if not a run at the AL Central title.
They see a team with solid pitching, a new slugger in Jose Abreu and renewed vigor. Now, all they have to do is back it up.
''You have to pitch, you have to hit, you have to score,'' said manager Robin Ventura, entering his third season. ''You have to play defense. You have to do all of them in our division. Detroit has won it the last few years. They have a combination of everything. Unless you do that, you're not going to be close. We proved that last year.''
They had the pitching part down last season. The rest? Well, that's where things got dicey.
| | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''

*White Sox-Twins Preview* =========================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Chicago (62-75) at Minnesota (60-77), 8:10 p.m. EDT
It's been an especially rough first few weeks for Minnesota Twins rookie Trevor May.
It hasn't been a particularly enjoyable stretch for White Sox veteran John Danks, either.
In what could become a high-scoring affair, May opposes Danks as the last-place Twins try to avoid a two-game home sweep against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.
Called up from Triple-A Rochester on Aug. 9, May (0-4, 10.42 ERA) has dropped each of his first four starts while allowing 20 runs in 16 2-3 innings. The right-hander was tagged for eight over 4 2-3 innings in Friday's 9-1 loss at Baltimore.
"I don't think it's all mental," he told MLB's official website. "I say it every time, but you have to make a pitch when you need to make a pitch. ... Moving forward, it's about trying to add on to those three innings and make it six, seven, eight innings. It's about throwing zeros and trying to get wins. It's doing my job, and I haven't done it yet. But I know I'm capable of it and that things can go my way."
Danks (9-9, 4.88) hasn't seen much go his way of late. The left-hander allowed two runs over six innings in Thursday's 3-2 loss to Cleveland.
"I'd like to go deeper in the game, but I kept us in (it)," he said. "That's the number one rule in my job description, I guess. We'll call it a success. It's not as good as I'd like, but at the end of the day, we didn't win."
That outing was Danks' best in six weeks, a stretch over which he's gone 1-3 with a 7.31 ERA. His only win during that span came 9-5 at Minnesota on July 25 after giving up four runs over seven innings.
Danks, who had dropped his previous six decisions in the series, is 7-12 with a 5.35 ERA against the Twins - his most losses against any team. Joe Mauer is 22 for 56 in their matchups and Oswaldo Arcia is 5 for 15 with two homers.
Chicago (63-75) is seeking a third consecutive victory after winning 6-3 on Tuesday. Dayan Viciedo delivered a tiebreaking home run in the 10th inning and Tyler Flowers added a pair of two-run shots for his first career multi-homer game.
"Even though we're not where we want to be right now, there's still a level of professionalism you have to keep," Flowers said. "Trying to get them off on the right foot, doing the right things."
The White Sox last won three straight July 24-26 in Minnesota.
Jose Abreu could return to the lineup after getting a day off due to general soreness. The slugging first baseman is batting .339 with seven extra-base hits and 15 RBIs in 14 games against the Twins.
"He's not injured, but every time you look at him it looks like he might get injured," manager Robin Ventura said. "He wants to play, but I think we're just making sure he doesn't do anything worse."
The Twins (60-78), losers in eight of 10 overall, have gone 9-20 at home since July 2 for baseball's second-worst record over that stretch. However, rookie Kennys Vargas is 12 for 27 with two homers, five doubles and nine RBIs during a six-game hitting streak in Minnesota.
