Manager: Clint Hurdle (seventh season)
Who's new? RHP Daniel Hudson, IF Phil Gosselin
Who's gone? IF Sean Rodriguez, OF Matt Joyce, SP Jeff Locke, SP Ryan Vogelsong, RP Neftali Feliz, C Eric Fryer
Projected lineup: 2B Josh Harrison (.283, 4 HR, 59 RBI, 19 SB), 1B Josh Bell (.273, 3, 19), RF Andrew McCutchen (.256, 24, 79), CF Starling Marte (.311, 9, 46, 47 SB), LF Gregory Polanco (.258, 22, 86), 3B Jung-ho Kang (.255, 21, 62), C Francisco Cervelli (.264, 1, 33), SS Jordy Mercer (.256, 11, 59)
Rotation: RH Gerrit Cole (7-10, 3.88 ERA), RH Ivan Nova (12-8, 4.17 for Yankees and Pirates), RH Jameson Taillon (5-4, 3.38), RH Chad Kuhl (5-4, 4.20), RH Drew Hutchison (1-0, 5.25 with Blue Jays and Pirates) or Steven Brault (0-3, 4.86) or Trevor Williams (1-1, 7.82) or Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.24)
Key relievers: LH Tony Watson (2-5, 3.06, 15/20 SV), RH Daniel Hudson (3-2, 5.22 with Diamondbacks), LH Felipe Rivero (1-6, 4.09 for Nationals and Pirates), RH Juan Nicasio (10-7, 4.50), LH Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 4.52 with Mets and Pirates), RH Jared Hughes (1-1, 3.03), LH Wade LeBlanc (4-0, 3.77 with Mariners and Pirates)
Hot spots: Rotation and closer. Right-hander Glasnow, 23, is a consensus top-25 prospect who made his major league debut last year. The Pirates would love to see him seize the fifth starter's job in camp, but right-hander Hutchison offers a more experienced option if Glasnow isn't ready. Watson became the closer after Mark Melancon was traded to Washington last summer, but his sinker/slider/changeup mix isn't typical ninth-inning stuff. Keep an eye on Rivero, a 25-year-old lefty acquired in the Melancon trade. His fastball actually gained velocity as last season wore on, eventually touching triple digits. Rivero might begin the season as the set-up man but his ascension to the ninth inning seems inevitable.
Outlook: The Pirates made some interesting tweaks after missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. They made no major trades, signed only two major league free agents (pitchers Nova and Hudson) and revamped Hurdle's coaching staff. They also moved their outfielders around: McCutchen goes from center to right, Marte from left to center, and Polanco from right to left. McCutchen is coming off the worst season of his career. So is ace right-hander Cole. The path back to the playoffs begins with the two stars bouncing back. If the team's other homegrown talent ' Taillon, Glasnow, Bell and Polanco ' continue their evolution, Pittsburgh should return to the postseason in 2017. | | MILWAUKEE: 2016: 73-89, fourth place
Manager: Craig Counsell (third season)
Who's new? 1B Eric Thames, 3B Travis Shaw, C Jett Bandy, RHP Neftali Feliz, RHP Joba Chamberlain, LHP Tommy Milone
Who's gone? 1B Chris Carter, C Martin Maldonado, OF Rymer Liriano, RHP Tyler Thornburg, RHP Blaine Boyer, LHP Chris Capuano
Projected lineup: 2B Jonathan Villar (.285, 19 HR, 63 RBI, 62 SB), SS Orlando Arcia (.219, 4, 17), LF Ryan Braun (.305, 30, 91, 16), 1B Eric Thames (.317, 40, 118, 13 SBs in Korea), RF Domingo Santana (.256, 11, 32), 3B Travis Shaw (.242, 16, 71 with Red Sox), CF Keon Broxton (.242, 9, 19, 23 SB), C Jett Bandy (.234, 8, 25 with Angels)
Rotation: Junior Guerra (9-3, 2.81 ERA), Zach Davies (11-7, 3.97), Matt Garza (4-8, 4.51), Wily Peralta (7-11, 3.86), Jimmy Nelson (8-16, 4.62) or Chase Anderson (9-11, 4.39) or Tommy Milone (3-5, 5.71 with Twins)
Key relievers: RHP Neftali Feliz (4-2, 3.52 with Pirates), RHP Corey Knebel (1-4, 4.68), RHP Carlos Torres (3-3, 2.73), RHP Jhan Marinez (0-1, 3.22), RHP Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 2.25 with Indians), RHP Jacob Barnes (0-1, 2.70), RHP Tyler Cravy (0-1, 2.86)
Hot spot: Fifth starter. Guerra and Davies began last season in the minors, then emerged as pleasant surprises in an otherwise long season. Now the Brewers have seven candidates for five rotation jobs. Nelson, who's led the staff in innings the last two years, might be wary of his two minor league options if he struggles out of the gate.
Outlook: No team was more active on the bases last season than the Brewers, whose 181 steals were the most by any team since 2009. Villar, Broxton and Hernan Perez were the primary thieves, and all return. The front office curiously chose not to bring back Carter after a 41-home run season. His replacement is Thames, who hasn't had a major league at-bat since 2012. Hitter-friendly Miller Park will do no favors to their pedestrian pitching staff, but the Brewers aren't expected to contend for at least another couple seasons. At least their offense will be entertaining in the meantime. |
| | Brewers host Pirates, seek fourth straight victory
MILWAUKEE -- It is only a three-game winning streak, but the Milwaukee Brewers feel as if they are back on track in what has suddenly become a scramble atop the National League Central. The Brewers' surge -- paired with losses by the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night -- moved Milwaukee into a tie with the Cardinals for second place, 1 1/2 games behind the division-leading Cubs. After watching their own 5 1/2-game lead over the rest of their rivals disappear thanks to a 7-18 swoon, the Brewers (62-59) suddenly have momentum as they go into the finale of a two-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon at Miller Park. The Brewers took the series opener 3-1 on Tuesday. "Our pitching's been really good now for three weeks outside of maybe two or three games," Milwaukee third baseman Travis Shaw said. "Offensively, we just weren't holding up our end of the deal. We had a good series against Cincinnati, Zach (Davies) pitched great again (Tuesday night), and we scored enough runs to win." Milwaukee's offense got a boost from the addition of Neil Walker, who has three hits in his first two games since coming over from the New York Mets. He also has been impressive in the field and is likely to see a majority of the action at second base down the stretch. "He (has) played really well," manager Craig Counsell said. "He knows what he's doing." Jimmy Nelson (9-6, 3.72 ERA) gets the ball for Milwaukee, looking to bounce back after a rough outing last week against the Cincinnati Reds when he was tagged for 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. "When it rains, it pours," Nelson said after that outing. "That was pretty tough. Can't do anything about it now. Just get back to work." Prior to that, though, Nelson has been every bit an ace for the Brewers, going 8-3 with a 2.96 ERA over a 16-start stretch. He has struggled against the Pirates in 2017, though, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA with seven strikeouts in eight innings over two starts. Overall, Nelson is 5-4 with a 3.64 ERA in 12 career starts against Pittsburgh, The Pirates will send right-hander Gerrit Cole to the mound, and he will try to continue his success against Milwaukee this year: 1-0 with 1.29 ERA in three starts. He is 3-3 with a 2.95 ERA in 10 starts vs. the Brewers in his career. Cole is 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA in four career starts at Miller Park. Cole has been red hot over the past six weeks, going 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA in five starts since the beginning of July. "I guess it's been pretty good," Cole said of his recent success. "There's still room for improvement. (I'm) still getting nicked here and there. I'll try to get better for the next one." The Pirates (58-61) have lost three in a row to fall 4 1/2 games behind the Cubs, but they could get a boost with the return of Francisco Cervelli. The catcher missed Pittsburgh's past three games with a sore left wrist but won't need a trip to the disabled list, according to manager Clint Hurdle. "This is an injury he will need to play through," Hurdle said. "(The time off was) an opportunity for us to calm it down a little bit." Cervelli is batting .500 in six games against Milwaukee this season but is 3-for-14 (.214) in his career against Nelson. |
