| | | PHILADELPHIA: PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ryan Howard and his teammates have heard critics say the window has closed for the Philadelphia Phillies.
They just don't believe it.
After a dominant run that included five straight NL East titles, two pennants and the 2008 World Series championship, the Phillies have missed the postseason two consecutive years. They have an aging core of players who've been declining.
Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Carlos Ruiz are the remaining regulars from the group that led Philadelphia to its best era of baseball from 2007-11 under former manager Charlie Manuel.
They're determined to make another run.
''We've had a bad couple years and had injuries and all that stuff, but I don't think it's over,'' Howard said. ''People are entitled to their opinions and that's fine, but it's up to us to go out there and show them otherwise and go out and play our game and do what we do.''
General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. refused to start the rebuilding process after the Phillies' first losing season since 2002. Instead, he re-signed Utley and Ruiz and added veteran outfielder Marlon Byrd and right-hander A.J. Burnett in free agency.
If the older players live up to their hefty contracts and younger guys like 2013 All-Star Domonic Brown, Cody Asche and Ben Revere continue to develop, the Phillies should be in contention.
''I think we're positive. We're expecting to win and plan on doing everything we can to ensure that,'' ace lefty Cliff Lee said.
| | MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Two pitches into his spring training return, the Brewers' most important player tried to prove his point.
Home run, Ryan Braun.
Now let's see how he fares when the games count.
Bolstered by the return of Braun from a 65-game doping suspension and the signing of free-agent starter Matt Garza, Milwaukee enters the 2014 season hoping it has the pieces to contend again in the competitive NL Central.
Braun has vowed to return to his 2011 MVP form.
''I think the expectation is to have an opportunity to compete to get back to the playoffs. That's our goal, I think it's realistic,'' Braun said during spring training in Phoenix.
Staying healthy would help, too. Besides Braun's suspension, injuries sapped much of the Brewers' power last year with projected 3-4-5 hitters Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart each missing various lengths of time. Hart never played because of a knee injury.
Hart is gone, but Braun and Ramirez are back and bolstered by new team cornerstones who emerged last season in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.

*Phillies-Brewers Preview* ==========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
Philadelphia (37-51) at Milwaukee (52-37), 8:10 p.m. EDT
Wily Peralta has been the benefactor of plenty of run support recently, but he may not want to count on much production heading into this outing.
The right-hander takes the mound for the struggling Milwaukee Brewers, who look to avoid a seventh loss in eight games Tuesday night against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies.
Peralta (9-5, 3.35 ERA) is 5-0 over his last six starts, but he's posted a 4.50 ERA in that stretch after giving up four runs and nine hits in six innings of Milwaukee's 7-4 loss to Toronto on Wednesday.
He's received 33 runs of support over 38 innings in that span.
"Wily was all over the place again with his command, but he did manage to give us innings and keep it tied," manager Ron Roenicke said. "We've got to get him locked in better and making some consistent pitches."
Peralta was far from his best the last time he faced the Phillies on June 6, 2013, as he allowed five runs and walked four in five innings of a 5-1 defeat. He may have to be especially sharp in this contest as the Brewers (52-38) have scored just seven runs over their last four.
Ryan Braun and Jean Segura had two hits apiece, and Jeff Bianchi had a two-run, pinch-hit single in Monday's 3-2 loss that ended Milwaukee's six-game winning streak against Philadelphia.
"We're not playing terrible," Roenicke said. "We're in all these games but we're coming up either a run or two runs short. It's just because we're not getting that big hit when we need to. We're not making the big pitch."
Braun sat out Sunday's series finale against Cincinnati with lower-back spasms, and he was lifted for a pinch runner Monday after doubling in the eighth. Braun, a .389 career hitter against the Phillies, is 8 for 16 with three homers and 10 RBIs in four games versus Philadelphia this season
The Phillies (38-51) had lost nine of 10, but Chase Utley, the NL's All-Star starter at second base, hit a two-run homer in Monday's victory.
The Phillies, who rank 27th in the majors with a .237 batting average, have scored three runs or fewer in nine of their last 11 and have reached double digits in hits just twice in their last 19.
"The early offense was nice, but we weren't able to add on," manager Ryne Sandberg said.
Philadelphia looks to win back-to-back games for the first time since a season-best five-game run from June 16-20 as it sends Kyle Kendrick to the hill.
Kendrick (3-8, 4.12) allowed nine runs over 14 innings while losing his previous two starts before giving up two runs in seven innings of Philadelphia's 5-4 win over Miami on Thursday.
"I've got that in me," Kendrick said. "I was happy with the way I threw. I went deep into the game and gave us a chance to win."
The right-hander has pitched at least six innings in 13 of his 17 starts, though that wasn't the case April 8 when he gave up six runs - four earned - and nine hits in five innings of a 10-4 home loss to the Brewers.
Kendrick, who is 1-2 with a 2.52 ERA in four career starts at Miller Park, allowed two homers to Braun in that defeat.
