| | | TEXAS: ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are already hurting significantly even before the start of a new season.
In a span of three days the week before opening day, the Rangers scratched ace Yu Darvish from that scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and found out they would be without second baseman Jurickson Profar and catcher Geovany Soto for 10 to 12 weeks each because of injuries.
Sure, the Rangers know there are going to be injuries during the season.
''We just didn't expect it to be all at this point,'' general manager Jon Daniels said.
The Rangers, after missing the playoffs last year for the first time in four seasons, already knew they would be missing lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland to start the season.
At least Harrison, who had a mild setback early in camp after his back issues last season, should return within the first month. Holland could miss at least half the season because of left knee surgery after being tripped by his dog on stairs in his home in January.
The only three position players remaining from the Rangers' last World Series in 2011 also missed games this spring with lesser nagging issues. But shortstop Elvis Andrus, third baseman Adrian Beltre and designated hitter Mitch Moreland should all be in the lineup Monday against Philadelphia.
After missing the playoffs for the first time in four years and scoring their fewest runs (730) in a full season since 1992, the Rangers' two most significant offseason moves were to improve their offense.
They got durable slugger Prince Fielder from Detroit by trading Ian Kinsler, a move that cleared the way Profar to be an everyday player. Free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo was signed to a seven-year deal - the same time left on Fielder's contract - to take over the leadoff spot.
Only Mike Trout (564) and two-time AL MVP Miguel Cabrera (562) reached base more the past two season than Choo (556) and Fielder (542), who has the longest active streak in the majors playing in 505 consecutive regular-season games - and 809 of 810 the past five years.
''I just want Prince to be Prince,'' said manager Ron Washington, starting his eighth season in Texas. ''I just want him to do what he does, and let everyone else does what they do, and everything will work out.''
| | HOUSTON: HOUSTON (AP) - Coming off three straight 100-loss seasons, the Houston Astros are confident they'll be better this year.
How much? They aren't putting a number on that. But after setting a franchise record with a whopping 111 defeats, they have a simple target.
''It's our goal to be the most improved team in major league baseball (and) I believe ... we have the group together and we can actually accomplish that,'' second-year manager Bo Porter said.
There are several reasons why the Astros are certain they can improve. They brought in several established players this offseason to pair with the many young players who got their first significant playing time last season. They also could get some reinforcements soon from top prospects who are inching closer to being major league ready.
General manager Jeff Luhnow's rebuilding plan has already boosted Houston's minor league system from the worst in baseball to one of the best. He expects that work to start paying dividends this season in the majors.
''We have a young team. We're still going to make some mistakes,'' he said. ''Our young players have improved but still need some development. We brought in some veterans to help stabilize the team this year. We're going to see a big improvement as a result of those two dynamics.''

*Rangers-Astros Preview* ========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Texas (52-81) at Houston (57-78), 7:10 p.m. EDT
The Texas Rangers are tied for the worst record in baseball, but an offensive barrage has them finding some success on the road.
The Rangers will try to put together another impressive display at the plate as they look for a second straight win over the Houston Astros on Saturday night.
Texas (53-81) and Colorado are level for the worst record in the majors, but the Rangers have won four of six games as they attempt to avoid that distinction. They'd also like to avoid finishing at the bottom of the AL West for the first time since 2007, but they're three games back of Houston (57-79) for fourth.
Texas gained some ground Friday, collecting 16 hits with four doubles and two homers in a 13-6 win over the Astros. That was a tremendous improvement after getting eight hits - seven singles - in a 4-2 defeat in the opener of this four-game set at Minute Maid Park.
Rookie Michael Choice is looking to build on the best offensive showing of his career, going 3 for 4 with a double and a three-run homer. The left fielder had been 0 for 10 with four strikeouts while being hit by a pair of pitches in his three prior games since being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
"He just needs to relax and trust his abilities," manager Ron Washington said of Choice, who is hitting .179 in 73 games this season. "Let the ball travel like he did and do his best to put the bat head on it instead of trying to force things."
Another big performance at the plate may be needed after the Rangers scratched Miles Mikolas from his scheduled start with shoulder fatigue.
Robbie Ross Jr. (2-5, 6.06 ERA) is expected to be recalled from Round Rock for a spot start. The left-hander was hammered for six runs in 4 1-3 innings of a 6-3 loss to Tampa Bay in his most recent start for Texas on Aug. 14.
Since then, he's allowed two runs in 12 2-3 innings in three minor league games - one start.
He's 2-0 while allowing two runs in 8 2-3 innings over eight relief appearances versus Houston.
The Astros, losers of five of seven, are expected to counter with Scott Feldman (7-10, 4.34), who has reportedly cleared waivers and could be dealt ahead of Sunday's waiver trade deadline.
"I did see that, but when I'm pitching I don't really think about it," Feldman told MLB's official website. "Human nature, you wonder what's going to happen. When I'm playing, I'm just thinking about the guy that I'm facing. We'll see what happens."
Feldman's recent performances at home could be making things easier for Houston to swing a deal. He's 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA over his last four starts at Minute Maid Park, and was solid again despite being charged with Monday's 8-2 loss to Oakland. The righty didn't get any run support while allowing three runs in seven innings.
Feldman, who spent his first eight seasons with Texas, is 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in three starts against his former team this year. He earned an 8-3 win in the most recent at home Aug. 9, giving up three runs in 6 1-3 innings.
