| | | CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
| | DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.

| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER AL PREVIEW (CLEVELAND-DETROIT) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Indians-Tigers Preview* ========================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Cleveland (76-70) at Detroit (81-66), 1:08 p.m. EDT
Much has been made about the struggles of Justin Verlander, who earned the win despite another lackluster performance earlier in the week.
He had an especially rough time against the Cleveland Indians in his previous start.
Verlander and the Detroit Tigers go for a three-game sweep against the visiting Indians as these AL Central rivals close their season series Sunday.
The Tigers (82-66) remain one-half game ahead of Kansas City for the division lead after rallying to win 5-4 on Saturday. Alex Avila delivered a go-ahead two-run homer with two outs the eighth inning, and Detroit held on for its fifth victory in six games.
"I don't care about the Royals, really," Torii Hunter told MLB's official website. "I only care about what the Tigers are doing right now. Sometimes you keep looking back and you trip over a rock."
The Tigers have taken six of seven from the Indians (76-71), who are running out of time to make a run at the wild card after falling five games behind the Royals with 15 to play. Michael Brantley went 2 for 4 with a two-run homer and Mike Aviles added a two-run double.
"Obviously, a loss like that is tough, but losing one game isn't going to make the difference," reliever Bryan Shaw said after serving up the game-winning homer. "Right now, we've got to battle back, come back and try to win tomorrow, and hopefully the rest of the teams that are ahead of us and everything else, everything goes our way and we have an opportunity."
Cleveland will try to regroup against Verlander (13-12, 4.82 ERA), who enters with a 1.43 WHIP - his highest mark over nine full seasons. He's on pace to finish with fewer than 200 strikeouts for the first time since 2008, recording just 6.96 per nine innings.
Verlander has allowed at least four runs in four of his last five starts, going 3-2 despite a 6.26 ERA. He gave up four runs and six hits over seven innings in Monday's 9-5 win over Kansas City.
The right-hander was tagged for seven runs over 6 2-3 innings in last Wednesday's 7-0 loss at Cleveland, dropping to 0-2 with a 5.95 ERA over a three-start stretch in the series. While Michael Bourn is a career .355 hitter against Verlander, Jason Kipnis is 3 for 31 in their matchups. Carlos Santana is 9 for 43, but five of those hits have left the yard for the most homers off Verlander by any active player.
The Indians turn to Trevor Bauer (5-8, 4.12), who allowed all four runs and struck out eight over a career high-tying eight innings in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Minnesota. The right-hander also yielded four runs in last Thursday's 11-4, 11-inning loss to the Tigers, giving up six hits and four walks over 5 2-3 innings.
Bauer has faced Detroit four times this year, going 2-0 despite a 4.88 ERA. Avila is one of five Tiger hitters to take him deep, going 4 for 7 in their matchups. Ian Kinsler is 5 for 13.
Verlander is 13-0 with a 3.68 ERA when receiving at least four runs of support compared to 0-12 with a 5.97 ERA when he doesn't.
Brantley is batting .421 with five homers, 11 doubles and 20 RBIs over a 27-game stretch against the Tigers dating to last July.
