| |  | CLEVELAND: CLEVELAND (AP) - Jason Kipnis didn't want it to end. He had plenty of company.
After the final out ended the club's magical, turnaround season so jarringly last October, Kipnis, who made his first All-Star team in 2013 and a few of his teammates lingered in the dugout and watched as Tampa Bay's players celebrated their 4-0 win in the AL wild-card playoff game.
One and done. Hardly the finish Cleveland wanted.
And once again, the city would remain without a major sports championship, a drought approaching its 50-year anniversary.
But despite their brief postseason appearance in manager Terry Francona's first year, the Indians intend to play in October again - and again.
''We don't want it to be a fluke,'' Kipnis said. ''We don't want to be a one-trick pony. We want to be at the top and we want to stay there.''
Hoping to build off their unexpected 92-win campaign, the Indians enter 2014 confident they can not only contend this season, but go even further.
During spring training in Arizona, first baseman Nick Swisher, who also serves as the club's high-energy hype man, handed out ''Unfinished Business'' T-shirts to his teammates.
The Indians aren't satisfied.
''Last season, hopefully, was a steppingstone that we needed to get us going in the right direction,'' Swisher said. ''Last year was that amazing year to get us in the right mind frame to say, `Hey, we can do this. We are a team. And people need to start recognizing it.'''
Cleveland had to win its final 10 games just to make the playoffs. The late-season kick wouldn't have been necessary if the Indians had played more consistently, and more evenness has been a focus for Francona, who feels his club has the makings to do something special again.
''I love our team,'' said the AL's manager of the year. ''I love coming to the ballpark and watching them play. They are easy to like because they try hard. When you can show up with a group of guys and you respect the way they go about things it makes the challenging times more fulfilling. We know we can do it now. We've got to try and go do it better.''
| | DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - When Justin Verlander takes the mound for Detroit on opening day, maybe then the Tigers will be able to enjoy a much-needed sense of normalcy.
As an offseason of drama gave way to spring training injuries, it was easy to forget the Tigers still have one of the most talented rosters in baseball. Sure, there have been some early problems for new manager Brad Ausmus to address, Detroit still figures to be the favorite to win its fourth consecutive AL Central title.
''We have a new look this year,'' outfielder Torii Hunter said. ''Little bit more speed and we'll miss the big man, but we'll score some runs.''
The ''big man'' is Prince Fielder, whom the Tigers traded to Texas in a blockbuster deal that brought second baseman Ian Kinsler to Detroit. That move gave the Tigers more financial flexibility, although they weren't all that aggressive in pursuing free agents. Detroit did sign Joe Nathan to replace departed closer Joaquin Benoit.
The Tigers also traded right-hander Doug Fister to Washington.
Lately, the focus has been on right-hander Max Scherzer, who enters his final season before free agency after winning the Cy Young Award in 2013. Negotiations with the Tigers on a long-term deal have stalled.
''They respect where I'm at. I respect where they're at, and we'll revisit this after the season,'' Scherzer said. ''I still want to be in Detroit. I love this clubhouse and everything about it. There's been a history of this team signing free agents so hopefully I'll be a part of that history as well.''
But right now Scherzer's future is uncertain, and with Hunter and Victor Martinez in the final season of their contracts, it's hard to say what Detroit's 2015 roster will look like.
So the Tigers may never have a better chance to win a World Series with this group than right now.

The Cleveland Indians snapped a three-game string of poor starts by their pitchers, but they couldn't find enough offense to protect against a late bullpen collapse the last time they took the field.
In Wednesday night's opener of a weather-shortened series against the Detroit Tigers, Zach McAllister draws the tough task of opposing Anibal Sanchez, who looks to continue his dominance over the Indians.
Cleveland (6-7) had three straight starters surrender five earned runs while failing to throw five innings prior to Sunday, when Corey Kluber limited the White Sox to two runs over 7 1-3 innings. The Indians took a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth before Alexei Ramirez hit a two-run walkoff homer off closer John Axford to send Cleveland to a 4-3 loss, its fourth in five games.
Axford had yielded just one run and one hit through his first six appearances and converted his first four save opportunities.
"Nobody in this game is perfect," David Murphy, the team leader with 11 RBIs, said of Axford. "But everybody in here has confidence in him and knows that he's going to get it done pretty much every day."
The Indians' Nos. 1-4 hitters - Asdrubal Cabrera, Nick Swisher, Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana - were a combined 2 for 15. Kipnis is hitting .234 though he seems to have woken up a bit, going 5 for 16 during a four-game hitting streak, while the other three are batting a combined .186.
Sanchez (0-0, 3.00 ERA) will look to keep them out of sorts while continuing his success versus Cleveland. He's gone 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA over his last six starts against the Indians. Kipnis and Swisher are a combined 4 for 26 off him with 11 strikeouts.
The right-hander was charged with three runs - one earned - over five innings of a 7-6 10-inning win over the Dodgers last Wednesday.
The Tigers (6-4) were set to open a season-high 10-game homestand Tuesday night after dropping two of three in San Diego, but the game was postponed due to bad weather. They opened 4-1 at Comerica Park against Baltimore and Kansas City and are 34-10 in the last 44 against Cleveland in Detroit. They won last season's series 15-4.
Detroit, which scored six runs in a win Saturday after being shut out Friday, lost 5-1 to the Padres on Sunday.
Miguel Cabrera's average fell to .225 after he was 1 for 12 in the series. His 25.3 swing-and-miss percentage is his highest since he missed 27.5 percent of the pitches he swung at as a rookie in 2003. He hit six homers and drove in 20 runs in 17 games against the Indians in 2013.
Cabrera and the rest of the Tigers will dig in against McAllister (1-0, 2.31), who threw 7 2-3 innings in last Wednesday's 2-0 win over San Diego, striking out seven. He had given up three runs in just four-plus innings in his season debut against Oakland.
McAllister recorded a 2.04 ERA over his first three starts versus Detroit prior to going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA over three matchups last season. Cabrera is 4 for 13 against the right-hander, while Victor Martinez is 5 for 9 with three doubles. Martinez is hitting .367 in 46 games against his former team with 20 doubles and 39 RBIs.
Michael Brantley is batting .469 during a nine-game hitting streak against the Tigers with six extra-base hits, while Austin Jackson also has six extra-base hits in a nine-game hitting streak versus Cleveland. He's 5 for 10 against McAllister.
The Indians activated outfielder Michael Bourn from the disabled list before Tuesday's game was postponed. Bourn missed the first 13 games with a strained left hamstring.
