| |  | ATLANTA: HITTING: The Braves were 27th in the majors in steals last year, but that number should rise with a full season of speedster OF MICHAEL BOURN, who was acquired from Houston last July. OFs MARTIN PRADO and JASON HEYWARD comprise the corner outfield spots, and are both are looking to bounce back after disappointing, injury-riddled 2011 campaigns. 2B DAN UGGLA smacked a career-best 36 HR in his first year with Atlanta, his fifth straight 30-homer season. Steady veterans C BRIAN McCANN and 3B CHIPPER JONES comprise a solid middle of the lineup. McCann has four straight 20-HR, 70-RBI seasons, while Jones, who turns 40 in April, has a career .402 on-base percentage. 1B FREDDIE FREEMAN was the N.L.'s best offensive rookie last year, batting .282 with 21 HR and 76 RBI. The starting shortstop will be one of two highly-touted, 22-year-old prospects, TYLER PASTORNICKY or ANDRELTON SIMMONS.
STARTING PITCHING: Even with significant injuries to three starters, the Braves rotation still ranked ninth in the majors in ERA (3.73), thanks to TIM HUDSON posting a 3.22 ERA in 215 innings. The right-hander was lights-out at Turner Field again, going 10-4 with a 2.31 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. But he'll be out at least a month because of back problems. JAIR JURRJENS was outstanding through the end of July (12-3, 2.38 ERA), but a knee strain bothered him in August and shut him down for September. Although many teams inquired about Jurrjens in the offseason, it doesn't look like the Braves want to deal him just yet. TOMMY HANSON is another young star (25) that had to be shut down in early August due to a partially torn rotator cuff. His ERA was a career-worst 3.60, but he notched a career-best 9.8 K/9 rate. BRANDON BEACHY, also 25, posted a whopping 10.7 K/9 ratio with a respectable ERA (3.68) and WHIP (1.21). Atlanta is loaded with young pitchers, but expect MIKE MINOR (5-3, 4.14 ERA) and RANDALL DELGADO to start in the majors, with JULIO TEHERAN, who has the most upside of the trio, to begin 2012 in Triple-A.
RELIEF PITCHING: CRAIG KIMBREL exceeded all expectations last year, establishing himself as one of the best closers in the game. He struck out an eye-popping 14.8 batters per nine (127 K in 77 IP), and converted 46-of-54 (85%) save chances. Even though Kimbrel's job as a closer is probably locked down for the next decade, the Braves have two other great relievers, both lefties. JONNY VENTERS posted a 1.84 WHIP and .176 opponents' BA in 88 innings, and is next in line for saves (five in 2011) should Kimbrel suffer an injury. Fellow southpaw ERIC O'FLAHERTY had a 0.98 ERA (8 ER in 73.2 IP) and 32 holds, just three fewer than Venters. | | DETROIT: HITTING: OF AUSTIN JACKSON doesn't make much contact, but manager Jim Leyland likes his speed in the leadoff spot. RYAN RABURN and RAMON SANTIAGO will split second base duties, with Raburn getting the majority of the starts. 3B MIGUEL CABRERA seems to have cleaned up his act. He's an MVP candidate. So is newcomer 1B PRINCE FIELDER who will try to keep slugging in his move to a pitchers' park. His presence was needed after DH VICTOR MARTINEZ was lost for the season with a knee injury. OF DELMON YOUNG is a pending free agent, and he hit well after escaping spacious Target Field. He'll nab the starting LF job but could also DH. OF BRENNAN BOESCH did enough pre-injury to earn an everyday role, but he'll again be in danger of fading over the summer. SS JHONNY PERALTA had a resurgence in 2011, and he's on the right side of 30. C ALEX AVILA might not hit for average, but his power is legit. Leyland favorite BRANDON INGE and DON KELLY will back up the All-Star corner infielders, so neither expect to get much playing time. Streaky OF ANDY DIRKS is a fourth outfielder. C GERALD LAIRD will spell Avila.
STARTING PITCHING: You can't expect an identical stat line for JUSTIN VERLANDER; his opponent .236 batting average on balls in play suggests there was some luck involved in his MVP season. But he's still the best pitcher in the American League by a wide margin. DOUG FISTER's improved strikeout rate with the Tigers suggests he could sustain success as a quality No. 2 starter. MAX SCHERZER can still be outstanding when he's on, but he was inconsistent again last year. He could figure it out in his late-20s, but time is running out. RICK PORCELLO still has a ways to go. His mid-season success came against some weak lineups. He's still only 23, but he hasn't been able to beat hitters at any level in the pros. The Tigers are still searching for a No. 5 starter. Top prospect JACOB TURNER is only 20, but the Tigers haven't been shy about fast-tracking young arms. He was dominant in the minors, but torched in his first big-league stint. ANDY OLIVER appears to be the front-runner for this role, but DREW SMYLY is also a possibility.
RELIEF PITCHING: JOSE VALVERDE was perfect in 2011, but it was a surprising development considering his sliding K/BB ratio. For Tigers fans, he carries more risk than 49-for-49 would suggest. One of baseball's better set-up men, JOAQUIN BENOIT is an eighth-inning-only guy. He'd take over if Valverde got hurt. OCTAVIO DOTEL is another elite set-up man who will step up as the seventh-inning guy. As good as AL ALBURQUERQUE was in the regular season (one extra-base hit'a double'allowed in 43.1 innings!), he's out until at least the All-Star break after offseason elbow surgery. Lefty DANIEL SCHLERETH has a chance to be the closer of the future, but first he'll need to cut down on the walks. |

*Braves-Tigers Preview* =======================

Atlanta Braves left-hander Paul Maholm knew his shutout streak would eventually end. Surprisingly, facing the Detroit Tigers could help him put more zeros up on the scoreboard.
Maholm goes for a team-high fourth victory Friday night when the NL East-leading Braves and struggling Tigers meet for the first time in three seasons.
Opening his first full season with Atlanta (15-6), Maholm (3-1, 1.03 ERA) worked 25 1-3 scoreless innings before giving up three runs in the sixth of Saturday's 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh. His shutout streak was the longest by a starter to open a season since Luis Tiant (27 innings) in 1966.
"I never really thought about the streak because I knew I was going to give up some runs at some point," said Maholm, tied with Mike Minor and reliever Eric O'Flaherty for the team lead in wins.
That wouldn't be the first time an opposing pitcher thought that heading into a start at Comerica Park. The Tigers (10-10) are batting .319 and averaging 6.3 runs at home. However, the defending AL champs are hitting .207 with 14 total runs during a 1-5 skid. Half of those runs crossed in a 7-5 victory over Kansas City on Wednesday when Detroit snapped a four-game skid.
The Tigers had five hits - a season-low at home - in Thursday's 8-3, 10-inning loss to the Royals.
Detroit will now try to avoid falling below .500 for the first time since it way 1-2 as it opens interleague play. It went 11-7 against the NL in 2012, including 6-3 at home.
The Tigers hosted the Braves once before, winning two of three in 2004. Detroit dropped two of three at Turner Field in 2010, but still owns a 9-6 edge in the series.
While there isn't much history between these clubs, scheduled starter Anibal Sanchez (2-1, 1.75) has faced the Braves 17 times, tied for his second-most appearances against any opponent. The veteran right-hander did not enjoy much success in those matchups while with the Marlins, going 4-11 with a 5.42 ERA. He has a 7.92 ERA in losing his last five starts versus Atlanta.
Sanchez hasn't surrendered a homer in 25 2-3 innings after lasting 6 2-3 in last Friday's 8-1 loss at the Los Angeles Angels, but keeping the ball in the park could be a test against an Atlanta team that leads the majors with 35 homers.
Braves slugger Justin Upton, the majors' leader with 11 home runs, is 4 for 13 with a homer off Sanchez and a .333 hitter in nine games against Tigers pitching.
Miguel Cabrera, batting .405 during a nine-game hitting streak, is a .319 hitter against Atlanta. He's 4 for 13 off Maholm.
Teammate Prince Fielder is 7 for 51 (.137) with 15 strikeouts in that matchup.
If Maholm runs into any problems, manager Fredi Gonzalez will have no problem turning to closer Craig Kimbrel, who blew his first save of the season in Wednesday's 6-5, 12-inning loss at Colorado, or a relieving corps that owns a MLB-best 1.60 ERA.
"There will be no residue the next time he goes out there," Gonzalez said of Kimbrel.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland hopes the same is true with his bullpen after it imploded Thursday. A day after Jose Valverde worked a perfect ninth in his season debut, Bruce Rondon blew a save in his major league debut, Phil Coke walked in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and Darin Downs surrendered a grand slam to Alex Gordon.
"We would have liked to get (Rondon) an easier spot, but if you are here, you have to pitch, and we were short," said Leyland, who was without Valverde and Al Alburquerque after both pitched the previous night.
