| |  | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
| | COLORADO: DENVER (AP) - Justin Morneau wears Larry Walker's old number and is stepping in for Todd Helton.
Just so it's clear, though: He doesn't expect to be the next Walker and certainly isn't trying to make Colorado Rockies fans forget all about Helton, the everyday first baseman in the Mile High City since 1997.
Morneau can only be himself, a slick fielder who's a four-time All-Star and former AL MVP.
That's not too bad, either.
Still, the Rockies wouldn't mind if Morneau channeled a little bit of those two Colorado icons to help them get back to the postseason. But that's a lot of cleats to fill, especially when it comes to Helton, the franchise's leader in virtually every offensive category.
Morneau's goals are more modest: Slide seamlessly into to this potent lineup, one that includes good friend and reigning NL batting champion Michael Cuddyer, along with Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitzki.
The 32-year-old Morneau knows the comparisons to Helton are inevitable. No. 17 spent 17 seasons in purple pinstripes, endearing himself to the community. The team will honor Helton on Aug. 17 when they retire his number (although Helton's first send-off will be hard to top, when the club gave him a horse in his last home game).
''From the outside looking in, it looks like I'm coming in to replace him,'' said Morneau, who wears No. 33 because of Walker, his boyhood idol. ''But that's not my thought process. My thought process is to just come in and be me and do what I can do.''
Cuddyer thinks Morneau will fit in just fine.
''If you think about the guy you're replacing, you're already not doing yourself a good service,'' said Cuddyer, who was teammates with Morneau in Minnesota. ''He respects (Helton), but he also understands he has to go out there and be himself.''

Michael Cuddyer is a big reason why the Colorado Rockies no longer own the worst record in the NL.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have also played a pretty big role.
Cuddyer looks to continue closing out an injury-plagued season in strong form Saturday and help the Rockies match their longest winning streak of the season with another victory over the Diamondbacks.
Cuddyer won last year's NL batting title with a career-best .331 average, but hamstring, shoulder and elbow injuries have prevented him from even having a chance to defend that crown.
"You can't control any of that stuff, obviously," Cuddyer said. "I didn't want to get hurt. I didn't try to get hurt, but I did. To think of what might have been, you're just doing yourself a disservice. There's no point in doing that. The only thing you can do when you get out there on the field is play hard and hopefully things go your way."
They're certainly going his way lately, as he's 12 for 25 with six doubles, two homers and nine RBIs in six games. He's been particularly impressive in leading Colorado (63-91) to wins in the first two of this four-game set with Arizona (62-92), totaling six hits with three doubles and two homers while driving in eight runs.
Cuddyer connected for a grand slam and a pair of doubles while accumulating a career-high seven RBIs in the Rockies' 15-3 rout of the Diamondbacks on Friday.
"When he's been out there, he's showing he's still an elite hitter in this game," manager Walt Weiss said. "He gets the barrel of his bat to the ball with impact."
Cuddyer is also impacting a dubious race, as Colorado tries to avoid a third straight last-place finish in the NL West. A four-game winning streak has moved the Rockies one-game clear of Arizona and the division cellar.
The Rockies had a season-high five-game winning streak from June 11-15.
The Diamondbacks haven't looked capable of stopping Cuddyer or the Rockies, losing four straight during which their relievers have surrendered 15 runs in 10 1-3 innings.
Trevor Cahill (3-11, 5.38 ERA) doesn't seem a likely candidate to end Arizona's skid since he's 0-3 with a 9.53 ERA over his last four starts.
The right-hander failed to complete six innings for the fourth straight outing Sunday, allowing four runs over four innings in an 8-6 win over San Diego.
"He's just trying to find out what he needs to do to find that consistent outing," manager Kirk Gibson told MLB's official website. "Sometimes he finds it and it seems to go in and out."
Cahill was effective in his only start in four appearances against Colorado this year, permitting three runs and four hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of a 14-4 win Aug. 9.
The Rockies are sending Eddie Butler (0-1, 10.13) to the mound after recalling him from Double-A Tulsa earlier this week.
The 23-year-old right-hander is considered one of the team's top prospects, but he was tagged for six runs and 10 hits with three walks in 5 1-3 innings of a 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his major league debut June 6. However, rotator cuff inflammation landed him on the disabled list three days later.
Butler went 1-3 with a 5.63 ERA over his last four starts in the minors.
