KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results.
They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona.
With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series.
''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January.
The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks.
''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.''
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.
CHICAGO CUBS: CHICAGO (AP) - Wrigley Field is decked out for the party of a century.
As for the Chicago Cubs?
It looks like there won't be much to celebrate this season other than their ballpark's 100th anniversary. As Wrigley hits a milestone, the Cubs remain in a rebuilding mode, hoping to avoid their fifth straight losing season.
They have a new manager in Rick Renteria. Their outlook looks about the same, though.
It's all about the future, the prized prospects in the system, no matter how painful that might be to the players in uniform at the major league level. More lumps appear to be in store for the Cubs as they enter their third year with Theo Epstein as president of baseball operations.
''The objective is to win as many games as possible, be the last man standing and bring a championship to the city of Chicago,'' pitcher Edwin Jackson said. ''The motivation is still the same. The message is still the same. We want to go out and win. We don't want to go out and be a pushover.''

*Dodgers-Cubs Preview* ======================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Los Angeles (87-66) at Chicago (68-85), 1:05 p.m. EDT

The playoff-bound Los Angeles Dodgers have gotten by with Roberto Hernandez turning in brief starts this month in part because Clayton Kershaw has preceded him in the rotation and provided a fresh bullpen.

Kershaw didn't go very deep in his latest turn, so the Dodgers could be looking for a few more innings from Hernandez on Saturday as they try for a third straight win in this four-game set with the Chicago Cubs.

Los Angeles (88-66), which clinched a postseason spot Friday after Milwaukee's 4-2 loss in Pittsburgh, got five innings from Kershaw in Friday's 14-5 win before turning it over to the bullpen after the likely NL Cy Young Award winner went at least eight innings in his previous seven starts.

Hernandez (8-11, 4.06 ERA) has followed him in the last three and lasted a total of 11 innings while going 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA thanks to allowing six home runs.

In Monday's 11-3 win in Colorado, Hernandez surrendered two runs and six hits while walking two others in 3 2-3 innings.

"I felt like I was able to keep the ball down today," Hernandez said through a translator. "It didn't work out in my favor."

Both of his career starts against the Cubs came this season while with Philadelphia, and the right-hander went 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA while Chicago hit just .162 off him.

Plenty of run support could be on the way from a club with an MLB-best 48-31 road record. The Dodgers have won six straight at Wrigley Field after Friday's win and have scored 22 runs in the first two games of the series. They've also averaged 8.57 runs with a .352 average over a 5-2 stretch.

Catcher A.J. Ellis went 2 for 4 with a pair of two-run homers after leaving the yard once in his first 86 games of the season.

"He always gives you good at-bats, but you're starting to see the hits come along, too," manager Don Mattingly said.

Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp each went 2 for 4 with a three-run homer, as Puig bumped his average to .419 over the last seven games and .526 in 11 against Chicago.

Dee Gordon and Hanley Ramirez also collected two hits apiece. Ramirez is batting .486 in his last 10 games while Gordon's 12-game hitting streak includes a .361 mark.

Chicago (68-86) fell behind 6-3 after the first inning but continued to get production from Jorge Soler with an RBI triple. The rookie right fielder is batting .361 with 18 RBIs and 12 extra-base hits in 17 major league games.

The Cubs give the ball to Felix Doubront (2-1, 1.50), who has impressed in three starts since joining the rotation on Aug. 30 and needs another to end the rough beginning to the series for Cubs arms. The left-hander limited Pittsburgh to four hits in six scoreless innings of last Saturday's 6-4 win.

"Everything went well today," Doubront told MLB's official website. "I was able to make good pitches to get quick outs and I'm really happy for that."

His only career outing against the Dodgers came in 2010 with Boston.

Cubs catcher Welington Castillo was hit by a foul ball in Friday's game and exited with a left rib contusion. The team said he is undergoing further evaluation.
