| | | BOSTON: HITTING: OF JACOBY ELLSBURY's 2011 breakout was no fluke. He has real power to complement his elite speed. 2B DUSTIN PEDROIA bounced back from a slow start to finish with career highs in HR and RBI. He benefits from hitting behind Ellsbury. 3B KEVIN YOUKILIS is a huge injury risk. His best seasons are behind him. 1B ADRIAN GONZALEZ wasted no time winning over Boston fans last year, and should hit even more HR in 2012. DH DAVID ORTIZ has put together two straight impressive years after being left for dead in 2009. 2011 Super Bust OF CARL CRAWFORD will bounce back, just not as much as most experts think. Most of the catcher duties will go to C JARROD SALTALAMACCHIA, with C KELLY SHOPPACH getting ABs against lefties. Right field will be filled by former Giants playoff hero CODY ROSS. SS NICK PUNTO replaces Marco Scutaro, who is now in Colorado. 3B MIKE AVILES is a solid hitter with the defensive flexibility to end up with semi-regular ABs. STARTING PITCHING: JON LESTER seems to have leveled off as a very good pitcher instead of ascending into an elite class. He lost some speed on his pitches and got hit a little harder in 2011. Coming off the best season of his up-and-down career, JOSH BECKETT's numbers are bound to regress a bit in 2012. Back problems limited CLAY BUCHHOLZ last season, and he lost some of the zip on his fastball. He'll tally a low ERA and 15+ wins if he can stay healthy. ALFREDO ACEVES was outstanding out of the bullpen last year, and will compete for a rotation spot this year. He was a starter for years in the Mexican League and the minors. Former setup man DANIEL BARD is being converted to a starter, but he may wind up back in the bullpen later on. After Tommy John surgeries, DAISUKE MATSUZAKA is due to return around July, while JOHN LACKEY won't be back until 2013. RELIEF PITCHING: ANDREW BAILEY was a acquired from Oakland in December for a heap of prospects. He's one of the best closers in baseball, and may even be an upgrade from departed Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth. Time will tell how he'll handle the increased scrutiny of playing in Boston. Coming over in a trade for infielder Jed Lowrie, MARK MELANCON was excellent as a closer last season in Houston and should be Bailey's main set-up man in the eighth inning. BOBBY JENKS has ninth-inning experience, but he will be out at least two months coming off a pulmonary embolism. | | CLEVELAND: HITTING: SS ASDRUBAL CABRERA's reinvented swing, modeled after Ben Zobrist, likely led to his power surge. OF GRADY SIZEMORE is back on a one-year deal, so he has plenty of financial incentive to stay healthy. But he will begin the season on the DL after back surgery. OF SHELLEY DUNCAN is expected to get more playing time in replacing Sizemore, but speedy OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA is also waiting for his shot. Injuries and off-the-field issues spoiled OF SHIN SOO-CHOO's 2011, but there's a good chance he bounces back . . . OF MICHAEL BRANTLEY does everything well enough to get a regular gig in center. C CARLOS SANTANA is developing into a middle-of-the-order run producer. DH TRAVIS HAFNER can't be trusted to stay healthy or to produce power numbers. After another down year, 1B MATT LaPORTA will have to sit and watch CASEY KOTCHMAN start at first more often than not. 3B LONNIE CHISENHALL will get his chance to play every day, but dwindling production the past two years is a concern. 2B JASON KIPNIS will get first crack at second base. He's got nice pop for a middle infielder. STARTING PITCHING: JUSTIN MASTERSON's strikeout rate continues to decline, and he still gets hit hard by lefties. Still, his strong groundball rate guarantees he's a solid middle-of-the-rotation arm at worst. His velocity dropped last year, and there's no telling if UBALDO JIMENEZ will ever regain his early 2010 form. He's the definition of high-risk, high-reward. DEREK LOWE was a decent middle-of-the-rotation arm in the National League, but now he must adjust to facing superior A.L. lineups . . . Healthy again, JOSH TOMLIN will remain in the rotation. He's hittable, throwing strikes and relying on his defense. Former Twins hurler KEVIN SLOWEY rounds out the staff. Although he posted a 6.67 ERA last year, Slowey has exhibited pinpoint control in his career with just 84 walks in 532.2 innings, tallying a .470 K-to-BB ratio. JEANMAR GOMEZ is a decent minor league arm, but his ceiling is low (long term and in the immediate future). CARLOS CARRASCO may not pitch in the bigs this year after Tommy John surgery. RELIEF PITCHING: CHRIS PEREZ is entrenched as the closer, but he was a bit of a disappointment last season. His velocity dropped slightly, and his strikeout rate fell off a cliff. If Perez gets hurt, VINNIE PESTANO is next in line for saves. He may be undersized, but his stuff is overpowering. TONY SIPP proved he can get out righties too, but his value is as a lefty-on-lefty guy. Ditto for sidearmer JOE SMITH, who is deadly on righties. But it would be a surprise if he shut down lefties for a second straight year. RAFAEL PEREZ has been hampered by shoulder soreness in Spring Training, but the lefty should once again be serviceable in the late innings this year. |

*Red Sox-Indians Preview* =========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Boston (9-4) at Cleveland (5-7), 7:05 p.m. EDT
Bonded by tragedy, the Boston Red Sox are on the verge of coming home with their longest winning streak in a year.
Doing so would also mean sweeping their first series against their former manager.
The Red Sox will send Jon Lester to the mound as they look to extend their winning streak to six in Thursday night's finale against Terry Francona and the Cleveland Indians.
A close group to begin with, the Red Sox (10-4) have become even tighter since the bombings at the Boston Marathon. After they arrived Monday from Boston, just hours after the explosions near the marathon finish line, manager John Farrell said 22 players went out to an impromptu dinner together in downtown Cleveland.
"I don't want to downplay the events that we just left in Boston, but I think what we've quickly come to see is a group that likes to be around one another," Farrell said. "Those are encouraging signs."
The team is also trying to be a source of healing, and in a display of unity has hung a jersey that reads "617 Boston Strong" - featuring the city's area code - in the dugout.
The Red Sox scored all their runs in the second inning Tuesday while opening this series with a 7-2 victory, then scored three in the first in Wednesday's 6-3 win.
"A good all-around game," Farrell said. "A very good game."
A sweep of Francona's Indians would give the Red Sox their first six-game winning streak since April 23-28. They return to Fenway Park to open a 10-game homestand against Kansas City on Friday.
Lester (2-0, 1.42 ERA) will try to keep the Sox rolling after three very solid starts to begin the year. The left-hander allowed one run and five hits in seven innings in his latest outing, Saturday's 2-1 win over Tampa Bay in 10 innings.
But it's pitching against Francona that seems to be at the front of his mind.
"It's going to be a little weird," Lester told the team's official website. "I look forward to it, catching up a little bit. I haven't seen him in a while, but yeah, it's definitely going to be a little awkward seeing him in that Indians uniform rather than the Red Sox.
"Now, he's on the other side, so we have to do the same thing he taught us to do - go out there and not worry about that stuff and try to compete and win."
Lester is 2-0 and has yielded one run with 28 strikeouts in 19 innings over his last three visits to Cleveland.
Francona is expected to turn to Zach McAllister (1-1, 2.19), who is looking to build on a solid performance from Saturday's 9-4 win over the White Sox. He allowed three runs - one earned - and five hits with six strikeouts before leaving with one out in the seventh.
The right-hander has split his two career starts with Boston, and he was especially impressive in the most recent Aug. 11. He turned in the longest start of his career, going eight innings while yielding two runs in a 5-2 home victory.
Cleveland's Nick Swisher is 8 for 19 with two homers and five RBIs over the past six games, connecting for a two-run homer on one of his two hits Wednesday.
He's batting .478 over his last 12 meetings with Boston, and owns a .326 average versus Lester.
