Manager: John Farrell (fifth season)
Who's new? LHP Chris Sale, RHP Tyler Thornburg, 1B Mitch Moreland, OF Steve Selsky
Who's gone? DH David Ortiz, 3B Travis Shaw, 3B Yoan Moncada, 2B Aaron Hill, C Ryan Hanigan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Junichi Tazawa, RHP Koji Uehara, RHP Brad Ziegler
Projected lineup: 2B Dustin Pedroia (.318, 15 HR, 74 RBI), LF Andrew Benintendi (.295, 2, 14 in 34 games), SS Xander Bogaerts (.294, 21, 89, 13 SB), RH Mookie Betts (.318, 31, 113), DH Hanley Ramirez (.286, 30, 111) CF Jackie Bradley Jr. (.267, 26, 87), 3B Pablo Sandoval (.000, 0, 0 in three games), 1B Mitch Moreland (.233, 22, 60 with Rangers), C Sandy Leon (.310, 7, 35) or Christian Vazquez (.224, 1, 12)
Rotation: LH Chris Sale (17-10, 3.34 ERA), RH Rick Porcello (22-4, 3.15), RH Steven Wright (13-6, 3.33), LH Drew Pomeranz (3-5, 4.59), LH Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7, 4.71)
Key relievers: RH Craig Kimbrel (2-6, 3.40, 31/33 SV), RH Tyler Thornburg (8-5, 2.15 with Brewers), RH Joe Kelly (4-0, 5.18), LH Robbie Ross (3-2, 3.25), RH Matt Barnes (4-3, 4.05), LH Fernando Abad (1-6, 3.66 with Twins and Red Sox), RH Heath Hembree (4-1, 2.65)
Hot spots: Third base. Is this the year Sandoval is known more for his ability to play baseball than his physique? Sandoval, who missed all but three games last year because of a shoulder injury, showed up to spring training looking slimmer than years past. His production at the plate and agility on the field followed suit in the Grapefruit League. The Red Sox have shown they aren't afraid to take playing time away from the Panda if he doesn't deserve it. Josh Rutledge, a competent fielder and perhaps a better hitter against left-handers, is around just in case.
Outlook: Boston scored more runs than any team in baseball last year, and this year's club has the pitching to avoid another early playoff exit. Newcomer Sale is the best left-hander in the AL, an ace in his prime. Porcello is the reigning Cy Young Award winner. David Price, when he returns from an elbow injury, gives the Red Sox arguably the best 1-2-3 punch in the league. Ortiz retired, but he'll leave a bigger hole in the hearts of fans than in the lineup. Benintendi is a candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award, while Betts played like an MVP at age 23. A bounceback season from Sandoval would give opposing pitchers no chance to breathe. Triple-A depth shouldn't be enough of an issue to prevent the Sox from challenging the Indians for the pennant. | | CHI WHITE SOX: 2016: 78-84, fourth place.
Manager: Rick Renteria (first season).
He's Here: RHP Lucas Giolito, INF Yoan Moncada, LHP Derek Holland, RHP Reynaldo Lopez, C Geovany Soto, OF Peter Bourjos.
He's Outta Here: Manager Robin Ventura, LHP Chris Sale, OF Adam Eaton, OF Austin Jackson, DH Justin Morneau, C Alex Avila, RHP Matt Albers.
Projected lineup: CF Leury Garcia (.229, 1, 5 in 18 games, 48 ABs; .313, 6, 35, 18 SBs in 84 games at Triple-A Charlotte) or Jacob May (.266, 1, 24, 19 SBs in 83 games at Triple-A Charlotte), SS Tim Anderson (.283, 9, 30), LF Melky Cabrera (.296, 14, 86), 1B Jose Abreu (.293, 25, 100), 3B Todd Frazier (.225, 40, 98), RF Avisail Garcia (.245, 12, 51), DH Matt Davidson (missed much of last season with broken right foot), C Omar Narvaez (.267, 1, 10), 2B Tyler Saladino (.282, 8, 38).
Rotation: LH Jose Quintana (13-12, 3.20 ERA), RH Miguel Gonzalez (5-8, 3.73), LH Derek Holland (7-9, 4.95 ERA in 22 games with Texas), RH James Shields (6-19, 5.85 in 33 starts with Padres and White Sox), LH Carlos Rodon (9-10, 4.04).
Key relievers: RH David Robertson (5-3, 3.47, 37/44 saves), RH Nate Jones (5-3, 2.29, 3 saves), LH Dan Jennings (4-3, 2.08), RH Zach Putnam (1-0, 2.30), RH Michael Ynoa (1-0, 3.00).
Hot Spot: Triple-A Charlotte. With Giolito, Lopez and Moncada likely to begin the season in Triple-A, many White Sox fans might keep a closer watch on the Knights than the big league club. The development of the franchise's suddenly rich minor league system will help determine the trajectory of Chicago's new rebuilding project.
Outlook: Lots of losses and trades. Quintana and Frazier likely will be shipped out at some point this season, and Robertson also could be on the move in the right deal. The White Sox seem fully committed to a major overhaul, and they added several prospects when they traded away Sale and Eaton over the winter. But it could be a rough couple of years while general manager Rick Hahn tries to establish a more reliable pipeline of talent throughout the organization. In the meantime, the White Sox still have Anderson, who was impressive in his first major league stint last year. Abreu is going for his fourth straight season of at least 25 homers and 100 RBIs. |
| | Red Sox's Sale returns to Chicago to face former team
CHICAGO -- Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale faced a tough question from his 7-year-old son, Rylan, as he prepared for his Tuesday start against his former Chicago White Sox teammates. Dad, the interviewer wanted to know, will you be nervous when you pitch at your old stadium? "A little bit of me will be," Sale admitted to reporters on Monday at Guaranteed Rate Field. "But I think I'm more looking forward to this opportunity than any other emotion just because it's fun. "I'm playing against my friends. It might be hard not to smile out there on the mound at a couple of them." In his first season with Boston (27-23), Sale has plenty of reasons to smile. The lanky left-hander is 5-2 with a 2.34 ERA as he prepares for his 11th start. He has struck out a major-league-leading 101 batters in 73 innings. Meanwhile, Chicago (24-26) is hovering below .500 in the first year of a long-term rebuilding project. The shift in philosophy is what prompted the White Sox to trade Sale to the Red Sox on Dec. 6 for a package of top prospects that included second baseman Yoan Moncada, right-hander Michael Kopech and outfielder Luis Alexander Basabe. Sale insists he harbors no hard feelings toward the White Sox despite several high-profile clashes with management during his final season in Chicago. He ripped the front office after Adam LaRoche's sudden retirement in spring training last season. In July, the franchise suspended him five games for insubordination when he cut up throwback jerseys he disliked. "More so than anything, I just want to let everyone know that I appreciated my time here," Sale said. "There's a couple blips on the radar amongst a lot of really good times. More times than not, it was great here, and I appreciated it. I always had good teammates. I always had a great coaching staff." After Sale's exit, White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana (2-6, 4.82 ERA) inherited the role of staff ace. Quintana will oppose his former teammate on Tuesday night. In seven career starts against the Red Sox, Quintana is 3-0 with a 2.87 ERA. Sale will be opposing Chicago for the first time in his eight-year career. The Red Sox will not have second baseman Dustin Pedroia for the remainder of the series. Pedroia flew back to Boston after sustaining a wrist injury Monday in the series opener. The team announced the injury as a sprained left wrist, but it is possible that an MRI could show worse damage. Quintana will look to bounce back from an ugly outing in which he allowed a season-high eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday. He is winless in his past four starts. "Throwing on the same day (as Sale) will be a different feeling for me because he was the best teammate I ever played with," Quintana said. "It will be a different feeling watching him go against me after the last four years when he was my teammate. We talked (Sunday night). He said, 'Hey, I'm in town. I can't wait to see you guys.' So I'm excited to him." Sale said he had no regrets from his time in Chicago. He said he had a soft spot for White Sox fans for the way they treated him from 2010-16. "They were great to me," Sale said. "They always gave me the benefit of the doubt. They always seemed to be in my corner, which I appreciated. I worked really hard when I was here, and I tried to give them everything I had. That's all you can basically do in this sport. "Attitude and effort, they're the only two things you can control. I tried to give them everything I had. I hope they appreciated what I did for them as much as I appreciated what they did for me." |
