| | | MINNESOTA: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The number is staggering. In the past three years, the Minnesota Twins have lost 291 games. Ninety-nine in 2011. Ninety-six each of the last two seasons.
A team that was once viewed as a model for succeeding and competing with modest financial resources has been an afterthought for too long now. They have finished last in the AL Central twice and were fourth last season.
So the Twins shed their frugal ways in the offseason, shelling out $73 million to bring in Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes to bolster a lagging rotation. They also brought back manager Ron Gardenhire on a two-year deal and moved Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in an effort to protect their franchise player from injury.
''They made a statement: `We don't want to see this again. We don't want to go through this again this summer,''' Gardenhire said.
The Twins said goodbye to longtime first baseman Justin Morneau late last season when general manager Terry Ryan traded him to the Pirates in a stretch-run deal. There weren't many other changes to an offense that has struggled to score runs, but the upgrades to the rotation have given the holdovers some peace of mind that they won't have to score seven runs a game to have a chance to win.
''It's night and day to be honest with you. Terry went out and spent some money on some good arms in Nolasco and Hughes,'' second baseman Brian Dozier said. ''Hughes had a bad year last year but is an All-Star pitcher and I think moving to this park will help him a lot. I think just getting out of New York to be honest with you. ... So we needed to address our pitching staff and Terry did that, and I'm happy about it.''
| | CHI WHITE SOX: CHICAGO (AP) - From rock bottom last season to contention this year? The Chicago White Sox see no reason why it can't happen.
They're ready to put last season's 99-loss wreck behind them and make a jump at least back to respectability, if not a run at the AL Central title.
They see a team with solid pitching, a new slugger in Jose Abreu and renewed vigor. Now, all they have to do is back it up.
''You have to pitch, you have to hit, you have to score,'' said manager Robin Ventura, entering his third season. ''You have to play defense. You have to do all of them in our division. Detroit has won it the last few years. They have a combination of everything. Unless you do that, you're not going to be close. We proved that last year.''
They had the pitching part down last season. The rest? Well, that's where things got dicey.

*Twins-White Sox Preview* =========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Minnesota (62-84) at Chicago (66-80), 2:10 p.m. EDT
The Chicago White Sox will have their longest win streak of the season if they can complete a sweep of the scuffling Minnesota Twins.
The White Sox will try for a fifth consecutive victory Sunday while sending the Twins to a season high-tying fifth straight defeat.
Chicago (68-80) looked like its win streak might end in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday when it gave up four runs in the first inning and trailed by one in the ninth. Dayan Viciedo, though, hit a two-run homer to give the White Sox a 7-6 victory.
Jose Abreu also hit his 34th home run - and first since Aug. 22 - and reached 100 RBIs while finishing with four hits in the doubleheader, which started with a 5-1 victory. He joined Hal Trosky (1934), Ted Williams (1939) and Albert Pujols (2001) as the only rookies with at least 30 home runs, 30 doubles and 100 RBIs in one season.
Abreu, among the AL leaders with a .321 average, is hitting .385 with three homers and 16 RBIs in 17 games against the Twins.
"He's the guy you want to put your buck on just because he's the guy. He just continues to have great at-bats," manager Robin Ventura said.
The White Sox haven't won five in a row since a six-game run Aug. 16-22, 2013, and their four consecutive home wins are their most since a string of eight consecutive victories Aug. 12-Sept. 3, 2012.
Hector Noesi (8-9, 4.69 ERA) will try to help deliver another win while improving to 3-0 in five all-time starts against Minnesota. He gave up three runs in seven innings against the Twins on Sept. 2 in a 6-3, 10-inning victory.
Noesi, 1-0 with a 3.54 ERA in his last three starts, also gave up two runs and three hits in 7 2-3 innings in a 5-2 victory in Minnesota on July 24. He allowed three runs and four hits over 6 1-3 innings in Monday's 5-4, 12-inning win over Oakland.
The White Sox haven't swept the Twins since Sept. 14-16, 2012, and their last three-game home sweep in the series was from July 23-25 that same season.
Minnesota (62-86) will also seek to avoid its third five-game skid this season and first since June 24-28. The Twins have dropped 16 of 20 and seven of nine on the road.
Trevor May (2-4, 8.38) will try to lift his struggling club by winning a third consecutive start. The rookie right-hander has a 4.50 ERA in his two outings this month, including an 11-4 win over the White Sox on Sept. 3, after putting up a 10.80 ERA in his first four major league starts.
May gave up three runs in five innings and fanned six against Chicago for his first major league win. He allowed two runs in five innings in a 4-3 win in Cleveland on Tuesday.
"It feels a lot better than the last four starts," May told MLB's official website. "Getting a win is definitely a step in the right direction. All the work I've been doing in between starts has started to pay off."
Abreu went 2 for 3 against May in this month's matchup. Viciedo, who has five homers in his last 11 games, hit a two-run shot off May and has four homers in last five games against Minnesota.
