Rotation: RH Felix Hernandez (11-8, 3.82), RH Hisashi Iwakuma (16-12, 4.12), LH James Paxton (6-7, 3.79), RH Yovani Gallardo (6-8, 5.42 with Orioles), LH Drew Smyly (7-12, 4.88 with Rays)

Hot spots: First base and right field. Veteran Valencia has the first baseman's job for now, but Dan Vogelbach is the heir apparent who will begin the season at Triple-A. Vogelbach, 24, slimmed down this offseason ' a necessity when you're 6 feet tall, weigh 250 pounds and expect to play your first full major league season ' and might have more weight to lose. Valencia, 32, has never been a full-time first baseman in seven seasons. Haniger is known more for his glove than his bat, but he struggled (.713 OPS) in limited time at a hitter-friendly park in Arizona last year. Safeco Field won't be as kind. Cruz will play right field if Haniger doesn't.
Outlook: General Manager Jerry Dipoto has paired a staff of fly-ball pitchers with three rangy outfielders, an exercise in team-building he once tried with the Angels. Dipoto caused a stir by executing 40 roster transactions during the offseason, but is it possible he didn't do enough? Haniger has never been atop a major league depth chart. Pitchers Gallardo and Smyly are coming off shaky seasons in Baltimore and Tampa Bay, respectively. On paper, the Mariners look like a top-heavy team without much help in the minors if the bottom falls out. That was the case for Dipoto with the Angels too, and sometimes it worked out OK. More often it didn't. | | BOSTON: 2016: 93-69, first place
Manager: John Farrell (fifth season)

Who's gone? DH David Ortiz, 3B Travis Shaw, 3B Yoan Moncada, 2B Aaron Hill, C Ryan Hanigan, RHP Clay Buchholz, RHP Junichi Tazawa, RHP Koji Uehara, RHP Brad Ziegler
Projected lineup: 2B Dustin Pedroia (.318, 15 HR, 74 RBI), LF Andrew Benintendi (.295, 2, 14 in 34 games), SS Xander Bogaerts (.294, 21, 89, 13 SB), RH Mookie Betts (.318, 31, 113), DH Hanley Ramirez (.286, 30, 111) CF Jackie Bradley Jr. (.267, 26, 87), 3B Pablo Sandoval (.000, 0, 0 in three games), 1B Mitch Moreland (.233, 22, 60 with Rangers), C Sandy Leon (.310, 7, 35) or Christian Vazquez (.224, 1, 12)
Rotation: LH Chris Sale (17-10, 3.34 ERA), RH Rick Porcello (22-4, 3.15), RH Steven Wright (13-6, 3.33), LH Drew Pomeranz (3-5, 4.59), LH Eduardo Rodriguez (3-7, 4.71)
Key relievers: RH Craig Kimbrel (2-6, 3.40, 31/33 SV), RH Tyler Thornburg (8-5, 2.15 with Brewers), RH Joe Kelly (4-0, 5.18), LH Robbie Ross (3-2, 3.25), RH Matt Barnes (4-3, 4.05), LH Fernando Abad (1-6, 3.66 with Twins and Red Sox), RH Heath Hembree (4-1, 2.65)
Hot spots: Third base. Is this the year Sandoval is known more for his ability to play baseball than his physique? Sandoval, who missed all but three games last year because of a shoulder injury, showed up to spring training looking slimmer than years past. His production at the plate and agility on the field followed suit in the Grapefruit League. The Red Sox have shown they aren't afraid to take playing time away from the Panda if he doesn't deserve it. Josh Rutledge, a competent fielder and perhaps a better hitter against left-handers, is around just in case.
Outlook: Boston scored more runs than any team in baseball last year, and this year's club has the pitching to avoid another early playoff exit. Newcomer Sale is the best left-hander in the AL, an ace in his prime. Porcello is the reigning Cy Young Award winner. David Price, when he returns from an elbow injury, gives the Red Sox arguably the best 1-2-3 punch in the league. Ortiz retired, but he'll leave a bigger hole in the hearts of fans than in the lineup. Benintendi is a candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award, while Betts played like an MVP at age 23. A bounceback season from Sandoval would give opposing pitchers no chance to breathe. Triple-A depth shouldn't be enough of an issue to prevent the Sox from challenging the Indians for the pennant. |
| | Porcello takes hill as Red Sox pursue sweep of Mariners
BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox are hot. The Seattle Mariners are not. On Sunday, the Red Sox, who have won six in a row, including the first two games of the weekend series with the Mariners, will send Rick Porcello out for the potential sweep of both the series and their six-game homestand. The Mariners, who have lost seven of their last eight and scored nine runs in those eight games, send right-hander Justin Bergman out to try to save their weekend. "This is embarrassing," Nelson Cruz said after Saturday's 6-0 loss. "I don't think we should be in this situation. I understand we have injuries and all that but there's a point where you have to turn everything around." Asked about using the word embarrassing, Cruz said, "We haven't scored runs in how many days?" They scored one run in each game of a five-game losing streak, got a three-run homer from Cruz and scored four in a win in Washington and now have been blanked in back-to-back games for the first time in almost 3 years. Bergman, 1-2 in the majors this season after starting 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA at Tacoma, is going for Seattle in the finale. Boston starter Brian Johnson went all the way in a five-hitter Saturday before being optioned back to Pawtucket. They have outscored their opposition 47-15 during the winning streak, compiled against three teams from the American League West. Porcello (3-5) has already lost one more game this season than he did when winning the Cy Young Award last year. He won his last start, but gave up a season-high 11 hits and four earned runs in 6 2/3 innings in that game. Porcello is 6-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 11 career starts against the Mariners -- 1-1 in two starts against Seattle last year (including a complete game). The right-hander has a 3.18 ERA over his last seven starts and has 30 strikeouts while issuing just three walks in 31 2/3 innings over his last five starts. But he has yielded 29 hits and 11 earned runs in 18 2/3 innings in his last three starts. Robinson Cano is 10-for-30 (.333) with a homer against him, but Nelson Cruz is just 5-for-31 (.161) with nine strikeouts, Danny Valencia is 4-for-18 (.222), Jarrod Dyson is 2-for-11 (.182) and Kyle Seager is 3-for-13 (.231). Bergman, coming off a strong outing -- 7 1/3 innings, two hits, no runs, nine strikeouts against -- against the Oakland A's, was shelled in Washington in his last start. He lasted four innings and gave up 14 hits, including four homers, and 10 runs, all earned. He is 1-2 with a 6.30 ERA this season and 8-11 with a 5.85 with the Rockies and Mariners. He signed with Seattle as a free agent back in December. On Saturday, Johnson was the story for the Red Sox, becoming the first Boston pitcher to pitch a shutout in his Fenway Park debut since Pedro Martinez way back in 1998 -- also against Seattle. Then, he was sent back to the minors. "That's the reality of the game," manager John Farrell said after Johnson, 26, struck out eight and walked none in his second win in as many tries this season -- with 85 strikes in 109 pitches. "He was outstanding with first-pitch strikes, a great job with overall strike percentage ... just really happy for him, as everyone is here, given all that he's been through and just a game in complete control." He pitched Boston's first complete game of the season. The Red Sox have back-to-back shutouts for the first time in almost two years. |
