Manager: Bob Melvin (seventh season)
Who's new? CF Rajai Davis, OF Matt Joyce, 3B Trevor Plouffe, IF Adam Rosales, RHP Santiago Casilla
Who's gone? IF/OF Danny Valencia, OF Brett Eibner, 2B Eric Sogard, 2B Tyler Ladendorf, LHP Dillon Overton, RHP Fernando Rodriguez
Projected lineup: CF Rajai Davis (.249, 12 HR, 48 RBI, 43 SB with Indians), C Stephen Vogt (.251, 14, 56), DH Ryon Healy (.305, 13, 37 in 72 games), LF Khris Davis (.247, 42, 102), RF Matt Joyce (.242, 13, 42 with Pirates) or Mark Canha (.122, 3, 6 in 16 games), SS Marcus Semien (.238, 27, 75, 10 SB), 3B Trevor Plouffe (.260, 12, 47 with Twins), 1B Yonder Alonso (.253, 7, 56), 2B Jed Lowrie (.263, 2, 27 in 87 games)
Rotation: RH Kendall Graveman (10-11, 4.11), LH Sean Manaea (7-9, 3.86), RH Jharel Cotton (2-0, 2.15 in five games), RH Andrew Triggs (1-1, 4.31), RH Jesse Hahn (2-4, 6.02 in nine games) and Frankie Montas (0-0, 2.38 in four games at Triple-A)
Key relievers: RH Ryan Madson (6-7, 3.62, 30/37 SV), LH Sean Doolittle (2-3, 3.23), RH Santiago Casilla (2-5, 3.57 with Giants), RH Ryan Dull (5-5, 2.42), RH John Axford (6-4, 3.97), RH Liam Hendriks (0-4, 3.76), LH Daniel Coulombe (3-1, 4.53)
Hot spots: Fifth Starter and Second Base. Triggs, Hahn and Montas are the top candidates to fill out the rotation. Montas, who turns 24 before the season, is the youngest and has the highest ceiling. Hahn is the only one with something resembling a track record of success in the majors. Triggs showed potential in five starts last year. Second base will belong to prospect Franklin Barreto at some point. For now the position belongs to Lowrie, who figures to become trade bait as the A's begin their annual migration toward mathematical elimination.
Outlook: It's been a long two years since the A's played postseason baseball. Rather than rebuilding outright, the A's spent their offseason stocking up on veteran position players. Their strength is a young rotation led by right-hander Sonny Gray ' another trade candidate who's coming off the worst of his four major league seasons (5-11, 5.69 ERA) and will miss time with a lat strain. If Cotton, Manaea and Triggs pick up where they left off, pitching won't be the problem. No team scored fewer runs than the A's in 2016, and it still isn't obvious that their lineup improved. Their home turf will be renamed in honor of Rickey Henderson when the Angels visit Oakland for the opener; maybe Rickey can hit leadoff, too. | | BALTIMORE: 2016: 89-73, second place
Manager: Buck Showalter (eighth season)
Who's new? C Welington Castillo, OF Seth Smith, OF Craig Gentry, OF Michael Bourn, LHP Vidal Nuno
Who's gone? C Matt Wieters, OF Nolan Reimold, INF/OF Steve Pearce, RHP Vance Worley, RHP Odrisamer Despaigne, LHP T.J. McFarland, LHP Brian Duensing, RHP Tommy Hunter
Projected lineup: LF Hyun-Soo Kim (.302, 6 HR, 22 RBI), CF Adam Jones (.265, 29, 83), 3B Manny Machado (.294, 37, 96), 1B Chris Davis (.221, 38, 84), DH Mark Trumbo (.256, 47, 108), RF Seth Smith (.249, 16, 63 with Mariners), 2B Jonathan Schoop (.267, 25, 82), C Welington Castillo (.264, 14, 68 with Diamondbacks), SS J.J. Hardy (.269, 9, 48)
Rotation: RH Kevin Gausman (9-12, 3.61 ERA), RH Dylan Bundy (10-6, 4.02), LH Wade Miley (9-13, 5.37), RH Ubaldo Jimenez (8-12, 5.44), RH Mike Wright (3-4, 5.79) or Chris Lee (5-0, 2.98 at Double-A) or Gabriel Ynoa (1-0, 6.38 with Mets) or Tyler Wilson (4-6, 5.27) or Jayson Aquino (0-0, 0.00 in three games)
Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key. |
| | Orioles count on strong Jimenez start vs. A's
BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Orioles hope to find some more power and a solid start from Ubaldo Jimenez on Tuesday in the second game of a three-game series with Oakland Tuesday at Camden Yards. The Orioles (61-64) banged out four homers Monday in a 7-3 victory over the A's (54-71). Baltimore sits 3 1/2 games out of the American League's second wild-card spot with 37 games left. "It means something to me to be playing when everyone else is at home," said Adam Jones, who hit two homers and went 4-for-4 on Monday. Jimenez (5-8, 6.47 ERA) will start against Oakland rookie Paul Blackburn, who has pitched well since being recalled for Triple-A Nashville on July 1. Jimenez has been inconsistent this season but has pitched better in the second half for the struggling Baltimore rotation. He is 4-1 with a 4.70 career ERA versus the A's. Blackburn (3-1, 3.46 ERA) had a no-decision in his lone start against Baltimore where he allowed four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings in Oakland on Aug. 11. In his subsequent start, he yielded four runs in four innings Wednesday during a no-decision against the Kansas City Royals. Blackburn will have to contend with Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado, who won the American League Player of the Week Award on Monday. Machado hit .385 (10 for 26) with four homers and 12 RBIs last week. His biggest hit was a walk-off grand slam that gave the Orioles a 9-7 victory over the Angels on Friday night. "It's a great accomplishment and I'm honored, but I've got to keep swinging the bat and keep playing well," said Machado, who went 0-for-5 on Monday. Orioles reliever Miguel Castro should return to Baltimore on Tuesday but cannot come off of the bereavement list until Wednesday. Castro has been a big plus for the team in middle and long relief. J.J. Hardy (broken wrist, 60-day disabled list) started rehab work Monday with Triple-A Norfolk, going 0-for-3 while playing shortstop. A's manager Bob Melvin said that catcher Bruce Maxwell should start on Tuesday against Jimenez after being held out Sunday and Monday. Maxwell took a ball off his mask Saturday and sat out Sunday. Melvin did not start him again on Monday, but the catcher pinch-hit in the seventh and remained in, going 0-for-2. The skipper said the left-handed-hitting Maxwell slept about 11 hours Sunday night and felt much better, but because left-hander Wade Miley was starting on Monday, Maxwell didn't get the start. Melvin also said that the team would not skip anyone in the rotation with five off days coming in the final six weeks of the season. At least one member of the A's should have some fun on Tuesday. Oakland outfielder Boog Powell is going to meet Orioles legend Boog Powell. The younger Powell will head to the barbecue stand that the former Oriole runs at Camden Yards. "That will be cool," said Melvin, a former Oriole himself. "Talk about your legends, especially here. He is one of the most popular players in Baltimore Oriole history. It probably makes some sense (that they meet)." The younger Powell now can talk with the Baltimore legend about home runs as he hit his first in the majors on Monday, a solo shot in the eighth inning off Brad Brach. |
