PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. PLAYER TO WATCH: Rick Nash. The top forward will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing postseason in which the 2002 No. 1 draft notched only three goals and 10 points in 25 games and heard boos from the crowd. The 30-year-old left wing has come to training camp looking thinner and fitter as he heads into his third season with the Rangers. Nash has four seasons left for big money on his current contract, so there is plenty of time for him to win over the Madison Square Garden faithful.
OUTLOOK: The Rangers will go as far as goalie Henrik Lundqvist, ''The King,'' will take them. The team has undergone major changes since the run to the finals, but with the strong core of returning veterans such as Nash, Martin St. Louis, and defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh, fortified by newcomers Dan Boyle, Lee Stempniak and Ryan Malone, New York could again be a tough out in the playoffs. A new captain is expected to be announced at the start of the season to replace the trio of alternate captains that took leadership roles after former captain Ryan Callahan was traded to Tampa Bay late last season for St. Louis. |

The New York Rangers are among the NHL's hottest teams coming out of the league's Christmas break and currently within one victory of their longest winning streak in 40 years.
They appear to have a good chance to match that mark Saturday night at home against a reeling New Jersey Devils team using a unique coaching structure following the firing of Peter DeBoer.
The Rangers (18-10-4) have outscored opponents 23-10 while winning seven in a row. They haven't won eight straight since Dec. 27, 1974-Jan. 11, 1975.
New York is allowing more than three fewer shots per game over its last seven while limiting opponents to two power-play goals on 18 chances (11.1 percent). The Rangers gave up 16 goals on 83 chances (19.3 percent) during their 11-10-4 start.
"I think that (the defensive effort) goes hand-in-hand with how we've been playing," Derek Stepan told the team's official website. "You have to play good defense. I think we've done a good job as a five-man unit."
Rick Nash continues to fuel the offense with six goals and three assists during the winning streak. Nash ranks second in the league with 23 goals and has 36 points in 32 games after totaling 39 in 65 contests in 2013-14.
He was credited with his sixth career hat trick and first as a Ranger a day after Tuesday's 4-2 win over Washington. He was originally given an assist on a third-period power-play goal by Martin St. Louis, but it was ruled that Nash was the last Ranger to touch the puck.
"You enjoy it when you're out there and watching him play, but you also appreciate what he brings to the team," goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said. "It's about winning, and he's helping us in a big way to win games."
Nash has six goals in his last seven matchups with the Devils and scored in a 4-3 win at New Jersey on Oct. 21, the team's third straight in the series.
Chris Kreider and Chris Mueller each had a goal and an assist, as did Adam Henrique and Jaromir Jagr for the Devils.
New Jersey (12-17-7), which is 2-5-3 in its last 10 games, fired coach Pete DeBoer on Friday. DeBoer was 114-93-41 with the Devils but hadn't reached the postseason since losing in the 2012 Stanley Cup finals.
General manager Lou Lamoriello is going to be part of a three-man coaching team behind the bench, with ex-Capitals coach Adam Oates in charge of the offense and former Devils assistant Scott Stevens directing the defense. Lamoriello, who will be behind the Devils bench for the first time since coaching three games late in 2006-07, also was coach for 50 games in 2005-06.
The trio, especially Oates, will look to get more offense from the Devils, who rank 28th with 2.1 goals per game. They've been shut out twice in their last four and haven't recorded more than 21 shots in their last three.
They were outshot 33-19 in Tuesday's 2-1 shootout loss to Carolina. Stephen Gionta scored in the first period but New Jersey surrendered the tying goal with 8:01 remaining in regulation and failed to find the back of the net in the tiebreaker. The Devils were scoreless on three power plays, falling to 1 for 14 over their last four games.
Leading goal scorer Michael Cammalleri wasn't able to provide a spark in his return after a four-game absence due to a lower-body injury. He hasn't scored in four straight games.
Forwards Patrik Elias and Martin Havlat didn't play Tuesday after being tested for mumps.
Jagr has eight assists and one goal in his last six meetings.
New York is 10-0-1 in its last 11 against divisional opponents.
