| | | WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. | | PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run. |

*Capitals-Penguins Preview* ===========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Washington (17-11-6) at Pittsburgh (22-7-5), 7:30 p.m. EDT
The NHL's mumps outbreak has hit hardest in Pittsburgh, but the Penguins have dealt with the issue and various other injuries to sit atop the Eastern Conference coming out of the holiday break.
Forward Steve Downie and backup goaltender Thomas Greiss are the latest to fall victim to the outbreak as Pittsburgh looks to beat the visiting Washington Capitals for the ninth straight time Saturday night.
Sidney Crosby since has returned after missing three games earlier this month with the mumps. Forward Beau Bennett and defenseman Olli Maatta also were infected but now remain out with unrelated injuries.
The Penguins (22-7-5) sent Downie, Greiss and Brandon Sutter for mumps testing this week, with Sutter's diagnosis coming back negative.
Pittsburgh's list of unavailable players hit 13 when forward Blake Comeau suffered an upper-body injury in Monday's 4-3 shootout loss to Florida that will keep him out several weeks. The Penguins fell 4-3 at Tampa Bay the following night.
"You don't like to lose, but we definitely had a lot of things going against us," Crosby said. "(A full lineup) would have made it easy to get ready for Christmas break early."
There has been no word from coach Mike Johnston about who specifically might return soon due to the break. Pittsburgh went 5-0-2 prior to its current skid and hasn't lost three straight all season.
"Certainly we're hoping that over the next five or six days, maybe by the end of this break, we'll start to get some bodies back into the lineup," Johnston said after the Tampa Bay game. "It's going to be exciting at that time getting two or three guys, then maybe the next week, getting two or three (more) guys back and that will really give us a big boost at that time."
Sutter could return after a two-game absence as the Penguins look to continue their streak against Washington, which hasn't beaten Pittsburgh since a 1-0 victory Jan. 11, 2012.
Crosby has four goals and 11 assists during a seven-game point streak against the Capitals (17-11-6), who had a three-game winning streak snapped with Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers.
Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored as Washington also had a nine-game point streak (7-0-2) come to an end.
"If the players are anything like me, I think we're all pretty tired. We've had a pretty long month here in terms of travel," said coach Barry Trotz, whose team will end a stretch playing six of seven games on the road with Monday's visit to the New York Islanders. "We've been on the road lots. I could feel that there was a group there that was a little bit tired."
Trotz attempted to change three of his four lines heading into the game at Madison Square Garden, but not much worked.
"Sometimes when you do that you get a little more offense, you get a little more enthusiasm because you're playing with some new guys," Trotz said.
Braden Holtby is in line to make a career-high 12th straight start in this contest. He's 7-1-2 with a 1.97 goals-against average in his last 10, but he's lost all four of his career appearances with a 4.38 GAA against Pittsburgh.
Marc-Andre Fleury was pulled early in the second period against Tampa after giving up three goals on 10 shots. He's still 6-0-2 with a 1.88 GAA over his last nine starts and has a 1.49 GAA during a six-start winning streak against Washington.
Ovechkin has 15 goals and 21 points in his last 14 regular-season games in Pittsburgh.
