|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system. | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD |

*Grizzlies-Trail Blazers Preview* =================================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Memphis (13-2) at Portland (12-3), 10:00 p.m. EDT
The Portland Trail Blazers take the longest current winning streak in the NBA through the holiday and into perhaps their toughest test of the young season.
They look for their 10th consecutive win Friday night against the Memphis Grizzlies, who are tied for the best record in the league.
The Trail Blazers (12-3) rallied to beat Charlotte 105-97 on Wednesday, trailing the Hornets by 11 at halftime before Wesley Matthews scored 20 of his game-high 28 points in the final 24 minutes.
"Wes is a guy that, once he sees one go in, he can make four or five in a row from three," point guard Damian Lillard told the team's official website. "Even in practice, any time I see Wes make a shot, the next possession I try to make sure that I see where he is ... He's one of those guys that can really get on a roll. He did it tonight."
Matthews made six of nine attempts from 3-point range and Lillard added 22 points and seven assists for Portland, which has its longest winning streak since an 11-game run Nov. 8-Nov. 25, 2013.
Portland can post a double-digit win streak in back-to-back seasons for the first time since it accomplished the feat in three consecutive seasons from 1999-02.
Coach Terry Stotts, while pleased with the results, isn't concerned with the historical relevance.
"We all have a pretty good perspective that it's a long season," he said. "We really haven't looked back at last year or last week."
Portland is averaging 104.4 points on the season and 107.2 during the win streak, but it's has trouble recently with the stingy Grizzlies, who have given up more than 102 points once this season and are allowing 92.4 overall - third in the league. Memphis (13-2) is tied with Toronto atop the NBA.
"It says a lot about our focus early on this season," point guard Mike Conley said. "That's all we wanted to do, was to come out focused the first couple months of the season. Set a good standard for ourselves, and now we just have to hold ourselves accountable and try to get better."
The Grizzlies rank fifth in the league with a plus-7.5 point differential, and they had proved to be a problem for Portland over the last few seasons up until the last meeting, a 105-98 Blazers victory in which LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28. Prior to that, the Grizzlies had won five straight in the series and three in a row at Portland, holding the Blazers to an average of 87.6 points in the five losses.
"They're a great team right now," Lillard said. "We can't look at it like, we're on our home court so something is going to be handed to us. We've got to come out there and lace 'em up and be ready to go get one."
Aldridge's performance last season stands as an outlier in an otherwise unimpressive record against Memphis. He's averaged 16.5 points in 26 career games versus the Grizzlies - his lowest mark against any opponent.
Zach Randolph, Memphis' leader with 11.6 boards per game, will have his hands full against Portland, the top rebounding team in the NBA with 47.9 per contest.
