|
| | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility. | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set. |

*Suns-Nuggets Preview* ======================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Phoenix (10-6) at Denver (7-8), 9:00 p.m. EDT
Gerald Green and the Phoenix Suns returned to their winning ways while continuing their excellent 3-point shooting. They may have to keep it up to stop the high-scoring Denver Nuggets from extending their run at home.
With Green seeking another big game in the series, the Suns will try to take both ends of a home-and home Friday night against a Nuggets team chasing a fourth straight home win.
Phoenix (10-6) and Denver (7-8) both rank among the NBA's highest scoring teams, with the Suns sitting fourth at 105.9 points per game and the Nuggets tied for sixth at 104.4.
The Suns have been particularly hot of late, averaging 109.0 points on 49.1 percent shooting while winning five of their last six games. They've also hit at least 12 3-pointers in each of their last four.
After having its season-high four-game winning streak snapped Monday at Toronto, Green helped Phoenix get back on track with 24 points and a season-high six 3-pointers in Wednesday's 120-112 home win over the Nuggets.
"When he makes some of those don't-even-shoot-it shots, it gets demoralizing for teams," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "They're going, 'That guy really made that shot? It's not going to be our night.' Gerald does that quite often for us."
Green has averaged 20 points while hitting 13 of 25 from beyond the arc over his last three games. He's also scored a combined 55 while hitting six 3s in each of his last two visits to Pepsi Center.
"He's just been a Nugget killer, all last season and this season to this point," Denver coach Brian Shaw said. "He just finds an opening, it's just like he has a target on us every time we play him."
Eric Bledsoe finished with 21 points and 10 assists for the Suns, who shot 51.1 percent from the field and 13 of 25 from 3-point range to end Denver's five-game overall win streak. Bledsoe took a hard fall in the third quarter, but is expected to be fine.
Markieff Morris had 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, leaving him with a 19.4 scoring average in his last five meetings.
Now the Suns could get a boost if leading scorer Isaiah Thomas returns from a bruised right ankle as the set shifts to Denver.
The Nuggets are scoring 112.7 points per game on 50.6 percent shooting - including 42.0 from long range - during their home winning streak.
Ty Lawson has provided a spark of late, averaging 18.3 points and 13.3 assists over his last three games overall. He finished with 17 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds in Phoenix, but he missed 12 of 16 shots.
Arron Afflalo has scored 17.8 per game and hit 20 of 43 from beyond the arc in his last eight, while Wilson Chandler is averaging 18.2 and is 15 of 29 from 3-point range in his past five. Afflalo also has put up 21.1 per game while making 17 of 30 from 3-point range in his last nine against the Suns.
Denver, though, needs to tighten up defensively after it had yielded just 99.4 points per game while limiting opponents to 41.5 percent shooting during its five-game run.
JaVale McGee (leg strain) and Danilo Gallinari (sore knee) are day-to-day for the Nuggets, who have dropped the last five meetings - including the past two at home.
