| TEXAS ST: Dennis Franchione has built up weaker programs than this, and entering his fifth year in San Marcos his Bobcats are almost ready for the next step. They have the rushing attack to dominate opposing defenses. The problems are on the other side of the ball, where a year ago the TSU defense was wildly inconsistent week to week, and they have some key pieces to replace this year. With a tough schedule that includes trips to Georgia Southern, Arkansas State and UL-Lafayette, it might be one more year before the Bobcats make a run at the conference title. | | ARKANSAS ST: Between QB Fredi Knighten and RB Michael Gordon, the Red Wolves' backfield is loaded with starpower. ASU is going to score points in bunches. The question is whether or not a weak rushing defense, a rebuilt secondary and a shaky kicking game can do enough to push them over the top. The good news is that they won't have to deal with defending league champion Georgia Southern (for a second straight season), meaning their conference title hopes might ride on road games at Appalachian State and South Alabama. |
