KEY GAME INFORMATION
UCLA: Last season: 15-17.
Nickname: Bruins.
Coach: Steve Alford.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: F/C Tony Parker, G/F Jonah Bolden.
Who's back: G Isaac Hamilton. Senior led the Bruins with 16.8 points per game last season. G Bryce Alford. He enters his final season playing for his father. He averaged 16.1 points and a team-high 5.2 assists last season. C Thomas Welsh. The 7-foot junior averaged 11.2 points and 8.5 rebounds. G Aaron Holiday. He averaged 10.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists playing 31 minutes a game as a freshman last season, but could be relegated to coming off the bench. F G.G. Goloman. The 6-foot-11 junior averaged 12.1 minutes last season. G Prince Ali. Solid defensive player who averaged 11.8 minutes last season.
Who's new: G Lonzo Ball. Well-regarded for his court vision and playmaking ability. The highly touted freshman is expected to be a one-and-done prospect. F T.J. Leaf. The athletic 6-foot-9 power forward was a McDonald's All-American who scored 3,022 points in his prep career. F/C Ike Anigbogu. The 6-9, 250-pounder gives the Bruins a different look at center than Welsh and could play his way into a larger role.
The Skinny: Alford guided UCLA to just the fourth losing season in school history since John Wooden was hired in 1948. He's got nearly everyone back and bolstered by one of the top recruiting classes in the country, including national player of the year Ball, the Bruins have nowhere to go but up after missing the postseason.
USC: Last season: 21-13, Lost to Providence in first round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Trojans.
Coach: Andy Enfield.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: F Darion Clark (transfer), G Julian Jacobs, F Nikola Jovanovic, G Katin Reinhardt (transfer), F Malik Martin (transfer), F Malik Marquetti (transfer).
Who's back: G Jordan McLaughlin. Junior who averaged a team-leading 13.4 minutes playing 32.4 minutes a game last season while sharing point guard duties. With Jacobs leaving school early only to go undrafted, McLaughlin will have to assume the responsibility of running the offense. He's healthy after enduring shoulder problems the last two years. F Bennie Boatwright. With Jovanovic also leaving early and not drafted, Boatwright will play even bigger minutes. He is long, athletic and can shoot from the perimeter. F Chimezie Metu. The 6-foot-11 sophomore has added 15 pounds and will join Boatwright in getting most of the frontcourt minutes. G Elijah Stewart. He shot 42 percent from 3-point range last season.
Who's new: G Shaqquan Aaron. Figures to start after transferring from Louisville and sitting out last season. F Charles Buggs. A graduate transfer who averaged 5.9 points last season at Minnesota. He can play right away. F Harrison Henderson. A 6-10 freshman from Dallas who needs development. G Kurt Karis. A 6-1 junior transfer from Chicago State. G Jonah Mathews. Younger brother of Gonzaga guard Jordan Mathews who can score. G De'Anthony Melton. Freshman who can rebound and defend. F Nick Rakocevic. A 6-10 freshman from Chicago who can run and rebound.
The Skinny: The Trojans lost their second- and third-leading scorers in Jovanovic and Jacobs and had four other players transfer. Three of their four freshmen could play big minutes off the bench. The athleticism on the roster should allow the team to stay close to its average of 80.5 points last season. USC will try to get back to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time since 2011.
PREVIEW
No. 8 Bruins prepare for rival Trojans

Crosstown rivals USC and UCLA will clash for the first time this season in a Pac-12 Conference game when the eighth-ranked Bruins visit the Trojans on Wednesday night at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.

UCLA (19-2, 6-2 Pac-12) is coming off a 96-85 loss to Arizona, which vaulted from No. 14 to No. 7 in the national rankings after beating the Bruins on their home floor.

USC (17-4, 4-4) has struggled a bit since bounding into conference play with an unblemished record, but the Trojans were buoyed by an 82-79 victory over Arizona State on Sunday.

The Bruins are emphasizing defense this week after they had a hard time stopping Arizona. The Wildcats shot 50 percent from the field and made 9 of 21 from 3-point range. They also amassed a 42-33 rebounding advantage and converted 19 of 21 free-throw attempts.

Point guard Lonzo Ball had 24 points, eight assists and six rebounds in another stellar performance for UCLA. The Bruins shot 45.1 percent and made 10 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough to mitigate their lapses at the defensive end.

"It's a wake-up call," Ball said. "The places we want to go, we have to play defense. This is a perfect example right here."

UCLA coach Steve Alford said the game reminded him of his team's only other loss this season, an 89-87 setback at Oregon.

"This was similar to Oregon in the fact that we scored in the 80s, but we just couldn't get stops in either half," Alford said. "We couldn't get into a flow to get into a rhythm defensively. Our defensive efficiency tonight was awful. We gave up 48 points in both halves, so they were very efficient and hard to guard today. This is a valuable lesson. I thought we were making strides and putting some things together defensively over the last couple of weeks since Oregon, but we regressed tonight against a very good basketball team."

Alford said the loss could benefit his team in the long run.

"They need this," Alford said. "I mean, you can be special, and come March you can be awfully special, but your defense has to grow. It's not one, two, three guys. It's playing defense with the same intensity and unselfishness that you play with offensively. It's where this team has to grow the most."

USC allowed Arizona State to shoot 50.9 percent from the field, but the Trojans shot 51.6 percent and made 14 3-pointers. Elijah Stewart scored 29 points and made seven 3-pointers for the Trojans.

USC coach Andy Enfield said it was an encouraging sign after the Trojans struggled to shoot the ball well in recent weeks.

"We can't shoot terribly every game," Enfield said. "Eventually, the law of averages evens out. It was nice to see the players step up and make shots. It was frustrating before missing wide-open shots. Tonight, they made those shots and that was the difference."
