| WASHINGTON: Last season: 19-15, lost in second round of the NIT.
Nickname: Huskies.
Coach: Lorenzo Romar.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: G Andrew Andrews, G Dejounte Murray, F Marquese Chriss, F Donaven Dorsey.
Who's back: F Matisse Thybulle. Thybulle started all 34 games as a freshman, averaging 6.2 points and 3.2 rebounds. Expected to take on more of a scoring role this season. F Noah Dickerson. Dickerson played in 33 games as a freshman, averaging 7.5 points and 5.2 rebounds. C Malik Dime. Dime set a Washington record with 88 blocks last season and became a better offensive player as the season progressed. F Dominic Green. Green has received offseason buzz as the Huskies' most improved player.
Who's new: G Markelle Fultz. Perhaps the most decorated incoming freshman to ever arrive at Washington, Fultz is being counted on to be the Huskies' offensive leader from the start. F Sam Timmins. The 6-foot-10 freshman gives Washington additional size on the inside. F Matthew Atewe. The Auburn transfer should see significant minutes off the bench.
The Skinny: The Huskies have not made the NCAA Tournament since 2011. It's a cloud hanging over Romar and only an NCAA trip will quiet the growing dissatisfaction of fans wanting a change. Fultz is an incredible talent and may be able to get the Huskies to the NCAAs in likely his only season at Washington. | | ARIZONA ST: Last season: 15-17, 11th in the Pac-12.
Nickname: Sun Devils.
Coach: Bobby Hurley.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: C Eric Jacobsen, F Willie Atwood, F Savon Goodman, G Gerry Blakes.
Who's back: Junior G Tra Holder has established himself as one of the Pac-12's top guards, averaging 14.2 points and 3.7 assists last season. F Obinna Oleka can play both forward positions, shoot from the perimeter or crash inside. G Kodi Justice can play both guard positions and provides instant offense.
Who's new: G Shannon Evans is expected to team with Holder in one of the Pac-12's best backcourts, one that will be enhanced by Sam Cunliffe, ASU's highest-rated recruit since James Harden in 2007. Freshman forwards Jethro Tshisumpa and Ramon Vila will be counted on right away with Arizona State's lack of depth on the front line.
The Skinny: The Sun Devils will be able to compete with nearly anyone on the perimeter. The problem will be inside, where injuries and ineligibilities have left them thin. Making the NCAA Tournament in Hurley's second season will be a huge accomplishment. |
