KEY GAME INFORMATION
NC STATE: Last season: 21-12, lost in first round of NCAA Tournament.
Nickname: Wolfpack.
Coach: Kevin Keatts.
Conference: Atlantic Coast.
Who's gone: A lot of scoring walked out the door with the loss of graduate transfer Allerik Freeman (16.1 points) and 7-footer Omer Yurtseven, a third-team all-ACC pick who averaged 13.5 points but has transferred to Georgetown. N.C. State also lost valuable experience with the departures of fifth-year senior Lennard Freeman, another graduate transfer in Sam Hunt and senior forward Abdul-Malik Abu.
Who's back: Senior Torin Dorn is the top returning scorer (13.9) after thriving in his first year in Keatts' system. Sophomore Braxton Beverly provided outside shooting and ballhandling, though he is recovering from surgery for a broken left hand and it's unclear when he'll be ready. And junior Markell Johnson is back at the point after ranking fifth nationally by averaging a league-best 7.3 assists.
Who's new: There's college-ready help in several transfers. The list starts with Utah transfer Devon Daniels, UNC Wilmington transfer C.J. Bryce and Missouri transfer Blake Harris, while Samford's Wyatt Walker and Florida International's Eric Lockett are graduate transfers. Daniels and Bryce worked out with the Wolfpack all last season while sitting out as transfers, while Harris sat out the spring semester after joining the program. Daniels is a 6-foot-5 redshirt sophomore who averaged 9.9 points while starting 26 games at Utah, while the 6-5 Bryce is a redshirt junior and first-team all-Colonial Athletic Association performer while averaging 17.4 points under Keatts at his previous stop. The 6-9 Walker will provide rebounding help, while Lockett will help with depth.
The Skinny: Keatts brought a needed won't-back-down competitiveness to the Wolfpack in Year 1, which included wins against nationally ranked Arizona, Duke and rival North Carolina. He had said several times that last year's team was able to do maybe about 75 percent of what he envisions for the long term with its fullcourt and pressure style of play. There's potential for the Wolfpack to do more in Year 2 with a lot of experience and versatility on the wing. Picked to finish eighth in the 15-team ACC, N.C. State seems positioned to return to the NCAA Tournament again.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have N.C. State at 85-to-1 to win it all, tied for 25th-best odds nationally.
NOTRE DAME: Last season: 21-15 overall, lost in NIT second round
Nickname: Fighting Irish
Coach: Mike Brey
Conference: Atlantic Coast
Who's gone: Forward Bonzie Colson (19.7 ppg, 10.1 rpg), point guard Matt Farrell (16.3 ppg, 5.5 apg), center Martinas Geben (11.1 ppg, 8.0 rpg).
Who's back: Junior T.J. Gibbs (6-3 guard; 15.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.9 apg) and seniors Rex Pflueger (6-6 guard; 8.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.2 apg) and Elijah Burns (6-8 forward; 2.3 ppg, 2.3 rpg). Sophomore D.J. Harvey (6-6 guard-forward; 5.8 ppg, 2.9 rpg) played in just 19 games after suffering a knee injury that required season-ending micro-fracture surgery; he has looked good in his limited preseason drills. Juniors John Mooney (6-9 forward; 5.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg) and Nikola Djogo (6-7 guard; 2.6 ppg, 2.2 rpg).
Who's new: Junior Juwan Durham (6-11 forward) is a transfer from Connecticut. Freshmen class was ranked in top 10 by some outlets: Prentiss Gibbs (6-3 point guard), Nate Laszewski (6-10 forward), Chris Doherty (6-8 forward), Dane Goodwin (6-6 forward-guard) and Robby Carmody (6-4 guard).
The Skinny: In five previous ACC seasons, Irish have equalled or surpassed preseason expectations three times, winning the ACC Tournament in 2015 while making back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Elite Eight. Last season they were predicted to finish third, but injuries to Colson, Farrell and Harvey hampered the Irish, who were one of the last four teams out of the 68-team NCAA field.
Expectations: Las Vegas oddsmakers have Notre Dame at 120-1 to win the NCAA Tournament.
PREVIEW
No. 17 Wolfpack checks depth heading to Notre Dame

North Carolina State didn't adjust well to a game without point guard Markell Johnson. That will be one of the goals for the No. 17 Wolfpack for Saturday afternoon's game at Notre Dame.

N.C. State has lost two of its last three games and had to rally to win the game in between.

Johnson didn't play Tuesday night at Wake Forest after taking a hard fall on his backside three days earlier. He didn't make the trip with the Wolfpack for that game. His status for the Notre Dame game hadn't been confirmed as of Thursday afternoon.

"Markell is a big part of our team," N.C. State guard CJ Bryce said. "We have to step into his place and play basketball."

Saturday's assignment at the Joyce Center in South Bend, Ind., marks the second of three consecutive road games for N.C. State (14-3, 2-2 ACC).

The reaction to Johnson's absence was ragged play in the 71-67 loss to Wake Forest. In a bizarre second half, N.C. State fell into a 22-point hole before rallying to tie.

Then some late-game malfunctions resulted in the defeat.

One issue to hit the Wolfpack was shooting. The team checked in with a season-low 37-percent rate from the field, marking the third game in a row with a new low mark.

That corresponded to a season-worst point total, only the third time this season that N.C. State didn't score at least 80 points.

"We got a lot of shots we just didn't make," senior guard Torin Dorn said. "Shots we normally make."

Without Johnson, who led the ACC in assists last season, there is going to be disruption to the offensive flow. But the Wolfpack have a deep bench that coach Kevin Keatts has turned to with regularity; nine players on the team average at least 16 minutes per game.

Notre Dame (11-6, 1-3) has its own depth issues. The Fighting Irish have had to adjust to a makeshift lineup in recent games because of injuries and illnesses.

The goal is to get junior guard T.J. Gibbs back to feeling good after he missed last Saturday's game with illness and then had trouble getting untracked in Tuesday night's 75-69 loss at No. 13 North Carolina.

"I played him 35 minutes because that really was our only option," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. "I thought (North Carolina) had fresh guys on him that really defended him and took him away. We need to get him back and get him 100 percent by Saturday."

Gibbs averages a team-best 14.1 points per game, although junior forward John Mooney (13.7) has helped pick up the slack. Mooney is the ACC's rebounding leader with 10.4 boards per outing.

Notre Dame will be in a second game this week with the opponent preferring a rapid pace. The Irish kept North Carolina's transition attack mostly under wraps, so that was an encouraging sign.

"I think our young group is figuring ourselves out," Brey said. "We're getting better. We're just 1-3 (in ACC play). We need to try to get another league win because they're hard to get."

Notre Dame has shot only 37.7 percent in league games, but N.C. State is allowing a league-worst 80.8 points per game in its four ACC outings.
