| | | OREGON ST: Last season: Oregon State went 19-13 and finished sixth in the Pac-12 at 8-10.
Nickname: Beavers.
Coach: Wayne Tinkle.
Conference: Pac-12.
Who's gone: G Gary Payton II, the team's top scorer and son of the former Beavers and NBA great, and Guard Malcom Duvivier, who was to be a senior this season but left the team for personal reasons and returned to his native Canada. F Olaf Schaftenaar, F Jarmal Reid and G Langston Morris-Walker have also moved on.
Who's back: Forwards Tres Tinkle and Drew Eubanks, and G Stephen Thompson Jr. All three sophomores figure to start this season. Tinkle, the Coach's son, averaged 13.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game before he injured a foot late in the season. Thompson, who averaged 10.6 points
Who's new: G Kendal Manuel, G Jaquori McLaughlin, G Ronnie Stacy, F Ben Kone.
The Skinny: The Beavers are a young team with just one senior on the roster, along with three junior college transfers who have never played at this level. Last season, the Beavers returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 26 years, and the team hopes to build on that experience for the future. | | MISSISSIPPI ST: Last season: 14-17
Nickname: Bulldogs.
Coach: Ben Howland.
Conference: Southeastern Conference.
Who's gone: F Gavin Ware, G Craig Sword, G Malik Newman, G/F Travis Daniels
Who's back: G Quinndary Weatherspoon. The sophomore was one of the SEC's most productive freshmen last season, averaging 12 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. G I.J. Ready. The veteran point guard played in 30 games, starting 22, and averaged 9.2 points per game.
Who's new: F Schnider Herard. Mississippi State needs a big-bodied forward and the 6-foot-10, 250-pounder should get plenty of playing time. G/F Mario Kegler. The 6-foot-7 freshman should be an immediate contributor after playing last season at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. G Tyson Carter. The 6-foot-4 guard will be playing for his hometown team after starring for Starkville HS. Gives the Bulldogs a 3-point shooting presence they lacked at times last season.
The Skinny: The Bulldogs haven't made the NCAA Tournament since 2009, but Howland, who is in his second season with the program, has quickly amassed some impressive talent that could make the program competitive in the SEC once again. |
