| PENN ST: Last season: 26-13, went 9-9 in league play to finish sixth.
Nickname: Nittany Lions.
Coach: Pat Chambers.
Conference: Big Ten.
Who's gone: G Tony Carr, G Shep Garner, F Julian Moore, G Nazeer Bostick.
Who's back: G Josh Reaves, F Lamar Stevens, F Mike Watkins, G Jamari Wheeler.
Who's new: G Myles Dread, G Rasir Bolton, G Daniil Kasatkin, G Myreon Jones, G Kyle McCloskey.
The Skinny: Carr's early departure for the NBA hurts and his conference-best 20 points per game will be missed, but the Nittany Lions have a veteran core that'll be led by one of the conference's top rebounders in Watkins, a stingy defender who's solid on both ends in Reaves and a host of young options who'll look to help star Lamar Stevens carry the scoring load.
Expectations: Chambers has faith that his team - which aimed to score 80 per game a season ago - can replicate that pace and better its win total even without the conference's leading scorer. Stevens was a force en route to the NIT championship where he averaged 19.2 points per game in five postseason games including a 28-point performance in the final. There's plenty of room for one of the newcomers to step up to help the rangy forward as Carr and Garner took 65 percent of the team's 3-pointers last year. |
