| | | TAMPA BAY: Arena Football Hall of Fame selection Lawrence Samuels will be making his head coaching debut this upcoming season with the team that made him one of the all-time greats. Samuels was part of three ArenaBowl championship teams and was named MVP and Ironman of ArenaBowl XVII with the Storm. He will look to return the team to glory days this season, but his task won't be easy. His first task as head coach will be replacing quarterback Adrian McPherson. McPherson accounted for more than 3,500 yards and 90 combined touchdowns last year, as he set numerous quarterback rushing records. The team brought in rookie quarterback Stephen Garcia to compete with last year's backup, Randy Hippeard, for the starting job. Whoever wins the training camp battle will have some help on the outside with Joe Hills, who is coming off a year in which he set career highs in all major receiving statistical categories. On defense, defensive back Chris Smith is looking to put together an encore to his stellar rookie campaign, in which he led the team in tackles and interceptions. The Storm had a difficult time getting to the quarterback last season, so the team has added veteran lineman Richard Clebert and a slew of rookie space-eaters and pass rushers to help the cause. | | PHILADELPHIA: For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Soul will open their season with the team that ended it the year before. The Soul are coming off of back-to-back ArenaBowl losses to the Arizona Rattlers and will travel to the desert for Week 1 once again. The Soul do return the majority of last year's roster, while also adding some key free agents. In December, Philadelphia acquired offensive lineman Jason Holman, who was the Ironman of the Game in ArenaBowl XXIV. He will be joining an offensive line that allowed a league-low seven sacks last year and opened holes for the League's top rusher Derrick Ross. Ross, who became the League's all-time leading rusher last year, will be looking to add to his career rushing record. Along with a dominant ground attack last year, Philadelphia also featured a dynamic passing game behind quarterback Dan Raudabaugh and wide receiver Anthony Jones. Raudabaugh was the second most efficient passer last year behind only Erik Meyer and Jones, who led the League in receiving yards, is coming off his third consecutive 2,000 yard season. Last season, Philadelphia had the League's top scoring defense behind First-Team All-Arena defensive end Bryan Robinson. Robinson was a force in the trenches last year, as he set career highs in sacks, tackles, and tackles for loss. The Soul added some more depth along the front as they brought in defensive end Pernell Phillips from Tampa Bay. Phillips recorded 12 sacks in his two years with the Storm. |
