| | | COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings. | | WINNIPEG: LAST SEASON: 37-35-10, 84 points; finished 11th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul Maurice, second season with the Jets, 478-469-99-73 overall.
ADDED: C Mathieu Perreault.
LOST: C Olli Jokinen, G Al Montoya.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Evander Kane: The 23-year old is entering his sixth NHL season, all with the Thrashers/Jets franchise. But the question surrounding Kane isn't where he'll start the season. Rather it's where he'll finish. Kane's name has been linked in trade rumors, leading the left winger to tell a Vancouver radio station in July he will operate under the assumption he is ''a Winnipeg Jet.''
OUTLOOK: The Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise has not qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs since the 2006-07 season. That probably won't change in 2014-15. |

*Avalanche-Jets Preview* ========================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
Colorado (2-4-2) at Winnipeg (2-5-0), 3:00 p.m. EDT
The Colorado Avalanche might have found the spark they need to ignite their offense and string together some victories.
After finally breaking out offensively, the visiting Avalanche look to win two straight for the first time Sunday against the struggling Winnipeg Jets.
Colorado (2-4-2) totaled 12 goals and no more than three in a contest prior to Friday's 7-3 win over Vancouver. Jarome Iginla scored the first two with his new team and had an assist while Matt Duchene added a goal with two assists as the Avalanche overcame a 2-1 first-period deficit by scoring four straight.
"As an offensive team, you need to see pucks go in to get your confidence," Duchene told the Avalanche's official website. "We've had games where we probably could have scored that many goals and we didn't. It's frustrating (knowing that), and really nice to see all those go in.
"I know that everyone's going to have a little more jump in their step. It bleeds into the next game."
That's the intended plan for the Avalanche, who a season ago won 14 of their first 16 en route to the Central Division title. Colorado's 3.0 goals per game ranked fourth in the league in 2013-14.
As the Avalanche managed to keep things in perspective during their early success last season, they've stayed the course and avoided panic amidst adversity this time. A performance like the one Friday could go a long way in helping Colorado potentially overcome its rough start.
"That's our hope and our belief," said Iginla, who has recorded all seven of his points in the last five games. "We want to keep it going."
Colorado went 3-0-2 against Winnipeg (2-5-0) last season with only one meeting decided in regulation.
The Jets have endured their own offensive struggles by totaling seven goals while losing five of six since a season-opening 6-2 victory at Arizona.
Three nights after snapping a four-game skid with a 3-1 victory over Carolina, Winnipeg regressed with Friday's 4-2 home defeat to Tampa Bay. Bryan Little scored his team-leading fourth goal, but the Jets were left frustrated after outshooting the Lightning 42-27.
"It's the kind of game that gives you a sour taste in your mouth because you feel you're a better team than that," said Little, who recorded Winnipeg's first and only power-play goal through 24 chances.
Though it's early in the season, the Jets take no solace in moral victories.
"We understand that this is a results deal, so we're not going to pat ourselves on the back," said forward Blake Wheeler, who scored his third. "Ninety-five percent of that game we were pretty in control of and playing really well."
Wheeler has five goals and 10 assists during a seven-game point streak against the Avalanche.
Little has five scores with seven assists in his last 10 versus Colorado.
Duchene recorded four goals and two assists in the five games against the Jets last season.
Teammate Semyon Varlamov, who made 26 saves Friday to earn his first win after missing three games with a groin injury, went 3-0-1 with a 2.14 goals-against average versus Winnipeg in 2013-14.
