| |  | CALGARY: CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Flames coach Bob Hartley acknowledged the obvious when he publicly praised the selection of defenseman Mark Giordano as Calgary's captain.
``Mark represents all the qualities that we set as a coaching staff and an organization,'' Hartley said. ``He is a quality man who is proud to represent the Calgary Flames both on and off the ice. We are very happy with (him) setting the example for our team, and especially our young players, as we move through this crucial yet exciting period in the history of the Flames franchise.''
Indeed, they will need all the help they can get. Calgary is coming off another disappointing season, and there are fewer and fewer stars around the locker room these days.
The Flames launched a complete rebuilding of the franchise at the trade deadline last season, and continued the overhaul during the offseason with a series of trades. A playoff berth doesn't seem likely this year, but Calgary will have a foundation for the future, if nothing else.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Jets coach Claude Noel speaks in simple, straight-forward terms a lot of the time. He is one of these what-you-see-is-what-you-get leaders.
So, it should come as no surprise to see his illustration for Winnipeg this season, especially when his Jets just missed the playoffs last season.
``I clearly see that we have to make the playoffs,'' he said in June. ``But it's not easy to make the playoffs.''
He's right.
Last season, the Jets finished ninth in the East, four points behind the No. 8 New York Islanders. Winnipeg captured hearts in Canada and was in contention into the final week of the season. In the end, the Jets seemed to have everything, in fact, except a berth.
So, like some other teams in Canada - Calgary and Edmonton last year - the Jets will try, try again to find that elusive spot this season. It won't be easy, as Noel points out. The Jets are now in the Western Conference, as part of NHL realignment, and are in a division with Stanley Cup-champion Chicago, Minnesota and St. Louis.

Coach Bob Hartley thinks winning will give the Calgary Flames confidence.
It may be doing the Winnipeg Jets some good, especially at home.
The Flames look to end their longest losing streak in almost four years Monday night, while sending the Jets to their first home defeat in five games.
Calgary (6-11-3) has 15 points to rank only higher than Edmonton (12) in the Western Conference. The Flames failed to widen that gap with the longtime provincial rivals Saturday, giving up four third-period goals in a 4-2 loss.
"We played I thought a very good first 40 minutes and then major bad decisions that turned into giving them life and putting us on our heels," Hartley told the team's official website. "We have a young team and we make bad decisions."
There have been plenty of those during the Flames' six-game losing streak, their longest since dropping nine in a row Jan. 11-28, 2010.
Hartley continues to question his team's mentality, but feels the solution is rather simple.
"To win," he said. "To win plus some guys are mentally stronger than others but every team goes through this but at the same time, just to make sure that we manage the game for a full 60 minutes."
Keeping the puck out of the net would also help.
The Flames are giving up 3.70 goals per game, and - once again - that's only better than the Oilers' NHL-worst 3.73. They've been even worse over the last six games, surrendering an average of 4.33.
Reto Berra has started five of those games after making 42 saves in a 3-2 overtime win at Chicago in his NHL debut. He's compiled a 4.04 goals-against average since, and was pulled once in favor of Karri Ramo.
Ramo is 0-2-0 while giving up three goals in each of his last three games, including a 7-3 home loss to Dallas on Thursday after replacing Berra midway through the second period.
Calgary rookie Sean Monahan tied Michael Cammalleri for the team lead with his eighth goal Saturday after he had just one in his previous 11 games.
Cammalleri, meanwhile, has been held without a point over the past two games, but he has two in his last three against the Jets. He enters this visit to Winnipeg with three goals in two road games.
The Jets (10-10-2) open a three-game homestand after their four-game win streak was snapped with Sunday's 2-1 loss at Minnesota.
They've won four in a row at the raucous MTS Centre, averaging 4.25 goals - 1.52 higher than their overall season mark.
"They're playing very well," Hartley said. "They're a pretty big team.
"I think that the first goal is always very important but it's going to be a game for men. There won't be any room for kids out there."
Dustin Byfuglien certainly fits Hartley's description. The 6-foot-5 defenseman has scored all four of his goals on the season over the last four games, including three in the past two.
This is Calgary's first visit to Winnipeg since a loss on April 6, 1996. They've won three in a row with this iteration of the Jets, winning 5-3 at home on March 9.
