KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Steven Stamkos knows taking the next step and becoming an elite team won't come easy for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With their 21-year-old star teaming with Martin St. Louis to form one of the highest scoring tandems in the NHL, the Lightning came within one victory of reaching the Stanley Cup finals last spring and created heightened expectations for this season.
Stamkos says it's going to be tougher this year because ``teams are not going to take us lightly.'' He says opponents know what to expect, so the Lightning have ``got to be ready.''
The Lightning made a dramatic transformation under first-year general manager Steve Yzerman and coach Guy Boucher en route to a surprising playoff run. They lost 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals.
WINNIPEG: From the moment the NHL announced its return to Winnipeg, the city's focus turned immediately to the future: What would the team be called? What would the sweaters look like? Who would the first opponent be?
But new general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff was just as interested in looking back at what happened before the Atlanta Thrashers migrated north.
``I think you have to look at the past a little bit in the sense that (last year) was a tale of two seasons,'' said Cheveldayoff, who was hired in June to replace Rick Dudley. ``The first half they came out and played exceptionally well, and the second half of the season something went wrong. You look at all the little indicators, you look at some of the things that maybe you can improve upon.''
That was particularly important because the roster remains nearly unchanged. Six defensemen and both goaltenders have returned from the NHL's 29th-ranked team in goals against - not to mention roughly two-thirds of the forwards.
Atlanta found itself in playoff position midway through last season before going 14-21-6 down the stretch and tumbling to 12th in the Eastern Conference.
A number of key players slumped, including big defenseman Dustin Byfuglien who had just 13 of his 53 points in the second half and top goaltender Ondrej Pavelec, who had a .893 save percentage in 31 appearances after Dec. 31.
``I think the pace of our game dropped off,'' captain Andrew Ladd said. ``The big thing for us was getting up the ice and putting pressure on other teams and forcing them to make mistakes. Once you have one or two guys not getting there in time, it gives teams an opportunity to get (the puck) out of their own end and get on the attack.
``Obviously, we gave up too many goals,'' he added. ``You can point to a few things, but we had a young team and we can learn from that and not make that mistake twice.''
It will be up to new coach Claude Noel and his staff to make sure it doesn't happen again.
The 55-year-old was given his first full-time NHL head coaching job after Cheveldayoff decided not to retain Ramsay. He was interim coach in Columbus for 24 games following Ken Hitchcock's departure in February 2010 and spent last season in Winnipeg coaching the AHL's Manitoba Moose.
The biggest unknown about the Jets season is what impact, if any, playing in a new city will have on the team's performance. Dating back to the Atlanta Flames move to Calgary in 1980, the last six NHL franchises to relocate averaged an 11-point improvement in their first year in a new setting.
For players who had grown accustomed to the relative anonymity they enjoyed with the Thrashers, there will be an adjustment period now that they're the biggest game in town.
``Definitely it's a big change,'' third-year forward Evander Kane said. ``Coming to a Canadian market and a Canadian city where hockey is No. 1. We've got some passionate fans, and a passionate province, so I think it's a fresh start for everybody.''
Kane is the most intriguing player in the lineup. At just 20 years old, he's expected to improve on a 19-goal season from a year ago and could develop into the team's most dynamic offensive contributor.
The Jets also will lean heavily on the line of Ladd, Bryan Little and Blake Wheeler and look for some added contributions from returnees Nik Antropov and Alex Burmistrov.
On the blue-line, Byfuglien is expected to log big minutes again. The 26-year-old also will have to deal with some off-ice issues after being charged with boating while intoxicated over the summer.
Zach Bogosian, Tobias Enstrom, Mark Stuart, Johnny Oduya, Ron Hainsey and Randy Jones round out the defense corps, while Chris Mason will back up Pavelec in goal.
One of the biggest challenges for the Jets will be enduring the wait for the regular season opener against Montreal on Oct. 9. It comes more than a week after the team wraps up the preseason.
``It's kind of like everything for us this year,'' Cheveldayoff said. ``There's been a lot of preparation and a lot of time that's gone in, but at the end of the day you just want to get things started.''

*Lightning-Jets Preview* ========================

By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer

Tampa Bay (37-36-8) at Winnipeg (37-35-9), 7:00 p.m. EDT

There will be no playoff hockey for the Winnipeg Jets or Tampa Bay Lightning, but these clubs have more to play for in Saturday night's season finale than trying to avoid a last-place finish in the Southeast Division.

While the Jets try to end their first season in Winnipeg on a positive note and avoid a fourth straight home loss, the Lightning would like to see Steven Stamkos become just the second player in 15 seasons to record 60 goals.

The Jets - Winnipeg's first NHL team in 15 years - had the division lead following a 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay in its last visit Feb. 23, but their playoff hopes were dashed with a 5-8-1 record since March 7.

Winnipeg (37-35-9) did pick up five of a possible eight points during a road trip which ended with Thursday's 5-4 loss to the New York Islanders. Coach Claude Noel, though, would like to see his team get off to a better start after getting outscored 7-3 in the first period during that four-game trek.

"It's disrespectful the way we start games," Noel said after his team fell behind 2-0 midway through the first period Thursday. "Yes we battled back, but we shouldn't have had to."

The Jets have dropped a season-high three consecutive home games but are 23-13-4 at the MTS Centre, including 2-0 against Tampa Bay.

"This first season back in Winnipeg was a blast," defenseman Tobias Enstrom said Thursday after scoring a goal and setting up another.

The Jets have one more point than Tampa Bay and Carolina, but they'll finish last in the division if they lose in regulation and the Hurricanes defeat Florida on Saturday.

The Lightning (37-36-8) know what it's like to drop in the standings after being one win away from the 2011 Stanley Cup finals.

Tampa Bay lost its fourth straight road game Thursday, 3-2 in overtime to Toronto, but Stamkos extended his team record with his league-high 59th goal. It is the highest goal total since Washington's Alex Ovechkin scored 65 in 2007-08.

"Whether it's 59 or 60, it doesn't make a difference in the quality of the player," coach Guy Boucher said.

Stamkos has team highs of three goals and eight points versus Winnipeg in 2011-12, including his NHL record-setting fifth OT goal of the season in last Saturday's 3-2 home victory. His 19 goals and 15 assists versus the Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise are both easily his most against any opponent.

Stamkos has 96 points and needs four more to pass Martin St. Louis (2010-11) for the third-highest single-season total in team history.

If goaltender Dwayne Roloson gets the start Saturday, it could be the last time he appears in a Lightning sweater, or in the NHL. The 42-year-old netminder is 1-1-0 with a 1.88 goals-against average in three games - two starts - against Winnipeg in 2011-12.

Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec should be in net Saturday after Chris Mason got the nod Thursday. Pavelec, one win shy of 30, has started all five games against Tampa Bay this season. His 30 saves in a 5-2 home win over the Lightning on Nov. 14 helped the Jets franchise end a 12-game skid in this series.
