| | | CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season. | | WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. |
| | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PA SPORTSTICKER HOCKEY PREVIEW (CAROLINA-WASHINGTON) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Hurricanes-Capitals Preview* =============================
Carolina (28-36-11) at Washington (41-25-10), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Alex Ovechkin is one goal away from reaching 50, with a league-best 22 on the power play.
The Washington Capitals could have trouble breaking through with the man advantage against a Carolina Hurricanes team that's among the top penalty killing clubs in the NHL.
Ovechkin and the Capitals continue their pursuit of a playoff spot when they host the Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
Washington (41-25-10) is 5-2-0 in its last seven after Sunday's 5-2 road win over the New York Rangers. Ovechkin, leading the league in goals, scored twice to put him on the verge of his sixth 50-goal season.
"When we play our game, we play simple and (opponents) make mistakes," Ovechkin said. "Mentally it's important for us."
The Capitals hold the first wild card in the Eastern Conference, trailing Pittsburgh and the Islanders by three points for an automatic Metropolitan Division spot.
Washington is at an NHL-best 24.4 percent on the power play behind Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, who has a league-high 28 assists with the man advantage.
Carolina has an 85.2 percent mark on the penalty kill and has allowed more than one power-play goal once in 36 road contests this season - it gave up two in its first away game Oct. 11 against the Islanders. The Hurricanes (28-36-11) also have been short-handed 183 times for the NHL's second-lowest total.
"It's been a staple in our game for a long time now," winger Chris Terry said. "The guys that are out there penalty-killing are working hard, they get in the lanes, they block shots and I think the big thing is they get it 200 feet every time every chance they get."
Washington has gone 1 for 6 on the power play in three meetings with Carolina. Ovechkin has one assist and Backstrom one goal in the season series, with the Capitals winning twice - once in overtime.
The Hurricanes' penalty killing is offset by their lack of offense, as their 2.27 non-shootout goals per game is among the lowest averages in the league. That problem surfaced again in Sunday's 2-1 overtime home loss to Boston.
Eric Staal was held without a point after amassing six over his three previous games. Jeff Skinner, second on the team with 18 goals, has gone a season-high 11 games without scoring.
"We're a good team, obviously I know our record shows otherwise," winger Nathan Gerbe said. "I know we're a good team, we've been in a lot of games, took it to a lot of teams but just finding the complete game, 60 minutes, is what we have to do."
Carolina will see a familiar face in Tim Gleason, traded to Washington on Feb. 28 for fellow defenseman Jack Hillen. Gleason also was traded by the Hurricanes last season before he rejoined them as a free agent this past offseason.
The Capitals were encouraged by two-goal games from Troy Brouwer and Jason Chimera this weekend. Brouwer ended a 12-game goalless streak in Saturday's 4-3 home loss to Nashville and Chimera stopped a 20-game drought Sunday.
"We're going to need the secondary scoring to contribute if you're going to do anything in the regular season and the playoffs if we can get there," coach Barry Trotz said.
The Hurricanes played Sunday without center Riley Nash, who took a puck to the head during pregame warmups.
