| | | BUFFALO: LAST SEASON: 21-51-10, 52 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 16th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Ted Nolan, 4th season with Sabres (including 1995-97), 90-98-28; 6th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Brian Gionta, LW Matt Moulson, C Sam Reinhart, D Josh Gorges, D Andrej Meszaros, C Cody McCormick, D Andre Benoit.
LOST: LW Ville Leino, D Christian Ehrhoff, D Henrik Tallinder, RW Matt D'Agostini, LW John Scott, C Zenon Konopka.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Reinhart. Selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft in June, the son of former NHLer Paul Reinhart is being given every opportunity to crack the season-opening lineup before his 19th birthday on Nov. 6. He was a play-making forward during three-plus seasons in the Western Hockey League, and is being counted upon to add immediate offense to a team that scored a post-NHL-expansion-era low 150 goals.
OUTLOOK: The Sabres can't be much worse after setting a franchise record for losses during a tumultuous season in which they changed their coach and general manager, and purged much of their veteran core, including trading goalie Ryan Miller. They've added veteran leadership (Gionta and Gorges) to complement their youth movement. And yet, the Sabres have too many questions marks - particularly in net, where Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are competing for the starting job - to consider them playoff contenders. | | WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. |

*Sabres-Capitals Preview* =========================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Buffalo (19-40-5) at Washington (35-21-10), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Considering Alex Ovechkin's recent scoring outburst, perhaps the only way the Buffalo Sabres could stop the three-time Hart Trophy winner would be for him not to play.
That could be the case Saturday night when the Washington Capitals play host to NHL-worst Buffalo.
Ovechkin has 27 goals in his last 30 games, including four over the Capitals' last two wins. He netted two in Washington's 4-0 victory over Toronto on Sunday, and scored twice more Tuesday in a 5-3 win at Columbus.
Ovechkin, however, did not play Thursday due to a lower-body injury, and the Capitals' two-game winning streak ended with a 2-1 loss to Minnesota.
He remains questionable for Saturday. Ovechkin had played in 96 consecutive games since sitting out two games in January 2014 with a lower-body injury.
"He doesn't miss very much time," coach Barry Trotz said. "It's amazing because he does go against the top and heaviest people in the league, and he doesn't play an easy game. He plays a hard game. That is quite surprising. It's a genetic gift, I guess."
Ovechkin's 67 points are tied with teammate Nicklas Backstrom, the New York Islanders' John Tavares and Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin for the league lead.
Backstrom has an NHL-best 49 assists, and has assisted on three of Ovechkin's last four goals. The Capitals (35-21-10) have dropped the last five games Backstrom has gone without a point, including Thursday's loss.
"It felt like I didn't play Backy near as much as I play him when Ovi is there," Trotz said. "I think everybody was fresher. The game was fast. From my vantage point, the game was played at a very high tempo. And both teams played a pretty good game."
Braden Holtby made 28 saves to boost his save percentage to .946 over his last four starts.
Buffalo (19-41-5) fell to Ottawa 3-2 on Friday for its third straight loss. With a 5-22-2 record in their last 29 games, the Sabres own the NHL's worst record.
They rank last in the NHL with 1.81 goals per game and 3.31 goals allowed per game - a minus-1.50 goal differential that is on pace to be the league's worst since the Atlanta Thrashers finished with a minus-1.74 in 1999-00.
Buffalo did manage to defeat Washington 2-1 on Nov. 22.
"The Sabres, they do come and work," Trotz said. "They've already beaten us this year. They're going to work, they're going to forecheck, they're going to give you everything they have."
None of the Sabres' rostered goaltenders were on the team for that game.
Anders Lindback stopped 34 shots Friday in only his second start since joining Buffalo on Feb. 11, and Chad Johnson, who was acquired from the New York Islanders on Monday, has yet to play.
Johnson is 0-1-1 with a 2.91 goals-against average when facing the Capitals this season but is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury, likely leaving the starting job to Lindback.
"I feel good. This is what I've been working for a long time to get some play time and try to prove myself," Lindback told the Sabres' official website. "Obviously, that's disappointing today, but I'm ready and I want to get back in there (Saturday) and try to win that game."
