| | | NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal. | | WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. |

*Islanders-Capitals Preview* ============================
By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer
New York (16-6-0) at Washington (9-8-4), 5:00 p.m. EDT
It's easy for Alex Ovechkin to believe the Washington Capitals will fare better in the finale of their home-and-home set with the surging New York Islanders than they did in the opener.
Actually getting it done Friday remains a serious challenge for the Capitals, who will try to keep the visiting Islanders from their first six-game winning streak in seven seasons.
John Tavares scored with 23.2 seconds left in overtime and Jaroslav Halak made 25 saves to extend his winning streak to eight games by helping New York (16-6-0) to a 3-2 victory over Washington on Wednesday.
"I think the next game will be different for them and for us as well," said Ovechkin, who scored twice on the power play.
That means the Capitals (9-8-4) must step up their game to cool off an Islanders team that's won 10 of 11 and is tied with Pittsburgh atop a Metropolitan Division it's gone 7-1-0 within. New York, which set a club record by winning 16 of its first 22 games, hasn't won six in a row since Feb. 12-21, 2008.
"Obviously, the biggest thing right now, it's still November," Islanders forward Anders Lee, who scored for the second time in three games, told the NHL's official website. "Obviously we've had a great start and we want to continue that and continue moving forward. But we're not going to get too caught up in all of this."
The Islanders have totaled 18 goals and allowed more than two once in five games. Tavares and Travis Hamonic each scored on the power play.
"We didn't play our best game, but because we're kind of on a roll, we have that confidence, and pucks are going our way (so) we can come out with wins," Lee said.
"When you play back to back like this, the momentum from (Wednesday), the physicality, everything carries over for sure."
Despite not earning the extra point, the Capitals believe they also have something positive to build on while trying to avoid a third consecutive defeat.
"We played the right way to win," said forward Marcus Johansson, who recorded his second assist in as many games after going four straight without a point.
"If we play like this on Friday, I'm pretty sure we're going to get more than one point. If we play like we did (Wednesday) against a team like this we're going to get a lot of points."
Washington, however, might need to find a way to get the best of Halak, who has a 1.21 goals-against average during his eight-game run that followed a four-game skid during which he posted a 3.89 GAA. Halak is two shy of Billy Smith's franchise-record 10 straight wins recorded from Jan. 23-Feb. 25, 1982.
This could be Halak's first appearance at Washington since the team traded him to New York in May. He went 5-4-3 with a 2.31 GAA in a little more than a month with the Capitals last season.
"They're not happy about (Wednesday's) result so they're going to try to play better," Halak said.
Ovechkin has five goals and two assists in his last five games versus New York.
