KEY GAME INFORMATION
BUFFALO: LAST SEASON: 21-51-10, 52 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 16th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Ted Nolan, 4th season with Sabres (including 1995-97), 90-98-28; 6th overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Brian Gionta, LW Matt Moulson, C Sam Reinhart, D Josh Gorges, D Andrej Meszaros, C Cody McCormick, D Andre Benoit.
LOST: LW Ville Leino, D Christian Ehrhoff, D Henrik Tallinder, RW Matt D'Agostini, LW John Scott, C Zenon Konopka.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Reinhart. Selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft in June, the son of former NHLer Paul Reinhart is being given every opportunity to crack the season-opening lineup before his 19th birthday on Nov. 6. He was a play-making forward during three-plus seasons in the Western Hockey League, and is being counted upon to add immediate offense to a team that scored a post-NHL-expansion-era low 150 goals.
OUTLOOK: The Sabres can't be much worse after setting a franchise record for losses during a tumultuous season in which they changed their coach and general manager, and purged much of their veteran core, including trading goalie Ryan Miller. They've added veteran leadership (Gionta and Gorges) to complement their youth movement. And yet, the Sabres have too many questions marks - particularly in net, where Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth are competing for the starting job - to consider them playoff contenders.
WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met.

*Sabres-Capitals Preview* =========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Buffalo (5-13-2) at Washington (9-7-3), 7:00 p.m. EDT

A severe lake-effect snowstorm has given the Buffalo Sabres some extra time to prepare for life without Michal Neuvirth.

That's something they hope proves beneficial heading into a matchup with Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

After having its last home game postponed, Buffalo will try to extend its longest winning streak since February to three when Jhonas Enroth takes over in net Saturday night in the nation's capital.

Because of the storm that has dumped more than five feet of snow on the Buffalo area, forward Patrick Kaleta, assistant GM Mark Jakubowski and head athletic trainer Tim Macre were unable to attend Tuesday's 4-1 home win over San Jose before the NHL postponed Friday's game against the New York Rangers.

The added time off hasn't been enough to help Neuvirth recover after he sustained a lower-body injury in the first period against the Sharks. The former Capitals goalie is expected to be out "longer than day to day," according to coach Ted Nolan.

Enroth, who is expected to start at least the next two games, hopes to build on his performance off the bench Tuesday as the league-worst Sabres (5-13-2) look to win three in a row for the first time since Feb. 25-28.

Enroth is 2-8-1 with a 3.63 goals-against average in 11 games this season and had allowed 16 goals over his previous three before stopping 19 of 20 shots against the Sharks. He's gone 1-0-3 with 3.37 GAA in four starts versus Washington.

"What I saw was that fight that he had in training camp when he wanted that No. 1 position," Nolan said. "That was a big thing to see, not only for the coaching staff, but for his teammates."

Ovechkin scored twice on Enroth and added two assists in the Capitals' 5-4 overtime road win in the most recent meeting Jan. 28. The superstar right wing has 13 goals and nine assists in 17 career home meetings with the Sabres.

Ovechkin finished with a goal and an assist Thursday as Washington (9-7-3) won for the fifth time in seven games, 3-2 at Colorado. His winning score with 5:56 remaining was his team-best ninth goal, but first in four games.

"I thought he had lots of juice," coach Barry Trotz told the NHL's official website. "He was flying around. Obviously the winning goal was prime Ovi. He had lots of juice in the legs; that was good. It was good to see."

Braden Holtby, who had 27 saves against the Avalanche, is 4-1-0 with a 1.59 GAA over his last five starts. He's also won his last three starts versus Buffalo, though Trotz has yet to officially name him the starter.

Whoever gets the nod has to deal with a Buffalo team that has 10 goals in its last two games after totaling 22 over its first 18.

Brian Gionta stepped up with a pair of tallies Tuesday after Zemgus Girgensons led the way with two goals in a 6-2 home win over Toronto last Saturday. Girgensons, tied for the team lead with six goals, has scored four in his last five games.

Washington's Troy Brouwer has four goals and three assists in his last five meetings with Buffalo.

The Sabres went 2-0-1 in last season's series, including a 2-1 shootout win in the only matchup at the Verizon Center.
